Questions on a New Hot Tub

One thing that has come to mind on this subject: My J480 had 2 filters, a large one that I think fed the main pumps, and a slightly smaller one that I think fed the circ pump. Together their combined surface area would be fairly big. The Maax and Sundance spas didn't have quite the same total...

    My threads keep getting merged!

Hi, I've posted a number of threads which have separate issues being discussed. But something keeps merging them into the same thread, defeating the whole point of having separate threads in different forum areas. Asking about insulation is different to asking about jet pressure, which is...

Questions on a New Hot Tub

Hi, We're looking at new hot tubs, and I've had a wet test of a Maax and a Sundance tub, but for some reason, in my mind they don't seem to have as much pressure coming out of the jets as our old Jacuzzi J480. Does the J480 have unique high pressure jets, or is my memory playing tricks on me...

    Jacuzzi J480 subwoofer location

Hi, I have a '07 Jacuzzi J480, and want to locate the subwoofer speaker unit. Does anyone know where it would be? I don't see it anywhere inside the motor compartment. Thanks - D

    Where's Chem Geek?

Hi, Does anyone know where the forum member Chem Geek is? He gave me some excellent advice several years ago when I was overhauling my hot tub. I don't see him here at the moment. Thanks - D

Questions on a New Hot Tub

We've been looking at new hot tubs, and both the Bullfrog and Maax dealers say their tubs are at the top of the list of most efficient hot tubs. Bullfrog say the list on the Californian Energy Commission website, the Maax guy says it's on the Californian Energy Group website. We've searched...

Questions on a New Hot Tub

Hi, We're looking at new hot tubs, and want some clarification on a few points: The Maax Spa dealer has combined UV / Ozonator units on his tubs. He says the UV acts not on the water but on the Ozone, turning it into a much more powerful sanitiser. Because of this, you hardly need any...

    Leaking jet: how to repair

Hi TFPers, My '07 Jacuzzi J480 has started to leak. I suspect it's from a jet, but can't see any visible signs anywhere to point me to the jet responsible. One of my main pumps has a leak, prominent when it's running (sprays water off the driveshaft like a tap just slightly open), maybe that's...

    SmartSpa SWG not working properly

Hi MDRagger88, It was from learned suggestions from here that I now operate at TA 40. It was said that, if using Borates at c. 40 - 50 ppm and CYN Stabiliser at c.30 - 40 ppm, the chemicals would be stable at TA 40, so that's what I've done for the past 7 years. I forget why TA 40 is good. I...

    SmartSpa SWG not working properly

Hi TFP, Long time no post. Anyway, I've just upgraded my Controlomatic ChlorMaker to a Controlomatic SmartSpa, as my electrodes had failed after 6 1/2 years (a record apparently!). On the top of the control box, it states: Stabiliser: 0 Alongside recommended chlorine levels / pH / etc. Now...

Breaker being thrown but Resistance is Good..?

I've checked from the phase and anti phase power feeds in reference to earth on both the circ pump and heater. I get no reading atall = no connection I have various multimeters. My main meters are currently: Precision Gold meter Sinometer M-830B

Breaker being thrown but Resistance is Good..?

Hi y'all, I just tested the circ pump and heater connections. I get no continuity when checking either of the pump's or heater's power feeds in reference to earth. I have put a small space heater inside to help dry out the dampness in the wooden floor, then I can try a mould spray. I suspect...

Breaker being thrown but Resistance is Good..?

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will check them out when I next have the tub skirts off, probably tomorrow, and report back with my findings.

Breaker being thrown but Resistance is Good..?

I did that process of elimination, as far as I can tell, and found that the circ pump and heater were causing the breaker to trip. With both disconnected, the breaker stays on, and the 2 main pumps run fine.

Breaker being thrown but Resistance is Good..?

BTW: What's the average lifespan of a heater? The tub is about 11 years old, so even though I suspect the heater isn't the cause of the breaker tripping, it may be wise to replace it anyway. I would be kicking myself if I rebuilt the tub with the original heater, only for it to fail the middle...

Breaker being thrown but Resistance is Good..?

Hi y'all, Thanks for the replies. I seem to remember disconnecting BOTH reconnecting them individually. When the circ pump only is connected, instant breaker trip. When the heater only is connected, breaker stays on for several seconds then trips (built in thermal protection..? I does have a...

Breaker being thrown but Resistance is Good..?

Hi TFP, My 2008 Jacuzzi J480 was left for an extended period due to family RV activity, and when I got to it, it had leaked a little water but it was enough to take the level below the filter input. I suspect the circ pump this ran dry. Upon trouble shooting, I've found that I can only get...

Spa aeration: pH rise... Natural equalisation?

Hi TFPers, I was thinking today: 1. If, in a Spa, aeration is commonplace 2. and such raises pH would a happily-balanced Spa's pH naturally settled back down to its original lower pH if left alone for a set length of time, or are we Spa owners always required to add Muriatic Acid / powdered...

pH keeps rising 'off the clock'..! Any ideas?

I indeed have c.50 ppm Borates in my water, and c.32 ppm CYA. I shall reduce my level of concern accordingly (to c.13 ppm..!) Thanks guys - D

pH keeps rising 'off the clock'..! Any ideas?

Hi y'all, I've reduced my TA to 40, yet my pH is still rising. I no longer open my cover every day or so, as I used to to allow the Chlorine powder to 'gas off'. In fact, unless being used for bathing, I don't have the cover open atall really. (Canadian Winter temperatures mean keeping the...

    Ozonator flow issues

Hi TFPers, I have an ozonator connected to a venturi, whose water flow passes on through an ozone 'turbo-mixer' device from Spa Depot (to help dissolve the ozone into the water). After suspicion of low flow rate, I disconnected the tube from the ozonator and submerged it in a glass of white...

pH keeps rising 'off the clock'..! Any ideas?

Thanks y'all for your insights. Yes, Chem Geek, as always, you're right! My mistake. I meant to say Baking Soda instead of Washing Soda. One thing that may influence things is this: I have a floating plastic (bubble-wrap like) thermal cover on top of the water, to help reduce heat loss in the...

pH keeps rising 'off the clock'..! Any ideas?

Hi TFPers, My pH keeps slowly rising, at one point it was the equivalent of 8.2 (off the top of my Taylor tester scale). My TA is pretty stable at 50, CYA is around 32, CH is 120, Borates of around 50 and Temp of either 99 or 103°F (depending on whether we bathe with our little daughter or...

UV system, recall and options - what to do

Using ChemGeek's advice, I constructed a 2-tier timer solenoid so that my UV only comes on during use, thus saving on bulb life and chlorine reduction. He's a handy chap, ain't he..! Daf Tekno
