Please explain relationship of CYA and sun; chlorine loss

Reply to jblizzie, Ah, the link provided by Divin' Dave below provided an answer to my question regarding your post about the percentage of chorline loss and the CYA: "A rough rule of thumb that applies is that at a pH of 7.5, the effective chlorine level is reduced by a factor about equal to...

Thank you for this part! I'll look it over carefully.

Please explain relationship of CYA and sun; chlorine loss

Thank you for your quick response. I'm actually hoping for the details. ;) I don't think ammonia is an issue here--no CC. I'm curious: Where did you find the information regarding 50% loss of FC to the sun every day? And are you saying 50% of whatever amount happens to be in the pool? Thanks...

Please explain relationship of CYA and sun; chlorine loss

I've hunted around on the site and have not found an explanation of the exact nature of the relationship between the CYA in the pool and the loss of chlorine levels when the sun is out. I read that if my CYA is at 50, chlorine won't be lost to the sun. And I see this on one of the PoolSchool...

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

We didn't lose it all to the leak. We've been discharging 4" or so every time we clean it, which is often. I won't drain any more, since I anticipate more cleaning and the leak hasn't been fixed yet. Replenishing the water after the vacuuming to waste and the backwash results in the CYA level...

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

Yes, we lowered about 14 inches. And we've vacuumed to waste. And then there is a leak. We're down to 60 now.

Here is a not very good one, with hose in pool and pool ready to be vacuumed. But I'll send it while I'm here reading the forum and maybe send a better one later.

I did do the dulted test, and the CYA is now down to 80. The pool is clear, and we continue to keep the chlorine at the SLAM level. It only required about half a bottle of bleach overnight, so we're making significant progress.

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

I did do it earlier, and CYA was at 140, as I recall. CYA levels is below 80 now. The pool is almost clear, and we continue slamming, at present checking every few hours and adding chlorine. It will be interesting to see how far the chlorine level drops overnight.

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

The pool is looking much better--it's such a good feeling to actually know what's going on with it! Very reassuring. We're vacuuming a bunch of stuff to discharge now, then will do another water reduction, check the water, add stuff, and wait til morning. Our pool has also always been sparkling...

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

Thank you all again so much! I'm looking forward to being algae-free with a low CYA. I hadn't thought about tablets for vacation. But then, we haven't taken a vacation for a long while, either. I can't imagine what kind of chlorine level was needed for a CYA of 350!!

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

We have probably been adding a couple inches of water a week to the pool over the past several weeks, because of evaporation and a probable leak. Leak source is not yet discovered, but we'll deal with it (thanks to good info on this site regarding how to attack it) once the algae issue is under...

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

Draining the whole pool is apparently not an option. If I'm not needing a tanker, it seemed okay to do this more gradually. I thought I'd recheck the CYA after refilling the first 4" we vacuumed to waste, then SLAM it, vacuum to waste and brush it until it's back down to the bottom of the...

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

If I do multiple drains, just bringing it down to the bottom of the skimmer, would there be a reason not to scrub the walls and floor and vacuum to waste?

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

I was under the impression that I don't have an option to leisurely fill the pool with a hose with a vinyl pool--is this incorrect? We don't use our well for anything. Lots of iron. No metals that I know of in our municipal water. Here are the hot-off-the-press Taylor test numbers: CYA over...

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

Thank you both for the quick reply! We have a pump to remove the water. If I leave a foot in the shallow end, I don't think I would be removing anything near the amount needed to get to a reasonable CYA level. Can't afford to replace the liner. If there is a foot in the shallow end, can I...

CYA very high; run other tests anyway if have to replace water? Newbie

Newbie here. My Taylor K-2006 arrives today. I have pool store test numbers now. Pool is yellow-green and cloudy with yellow powdery stuff on bottom. I won't go into how it got this way, but it's been like this for more than a week. Thank goodness for this website, which I found over the...
