    The Green Monster Next Door...

The pool company came yesterday evening and put a pump in the bottom of the deep end and then came back this morning to finish the job. They started at 7:30AM this morning and by 4:00PM they had the new liner in with the vac pump sucking out the air behind the liner. The installer was...

No exemption. They claim they don't have the manpower to record your meter before/after and won't take your word. My liner was a year old when the ants trashed it. Now I spend at least $30/year for the Terro ant killer to prevent it from happening again.

Water choices in Toledo. 1. Fill from your hose and pay sewage charges on the water your meter records (about three times the water charge). 2. Get a hydrant meter from the city and pay just for the water it records, but it's a huge hassle and most pool companies don't do it anymore. 3. Truck...

    The Green Monster Next Door...

Well, the pool company that was out on the 18th came in with way too high of a bid and some no-name outfit is to do the job now for $2,100 plus $170 for water. Neighbor claims that this guy can get a liner for his 16x32x8 IG with 6" radius corners in a week, so we'll see what results from this...

    The Green Monster Next Door...

I was rethinking my response earlier about fixing the sand bottom of the Green Monster. This pool has been seeping algae filled water under the liner for nearly a year now. The sand of the shallow end and the hopper in the deep end have got to be completely saturated with this stuff. Not...

    The Green Monster Next Door...

The bottom is sand on that pool. Sand bottoms always have to be redone, or reshaped, to fit the new liner's shape. It's not usually a big issue, just two or three hours of trowel work before they drop the new liner in if the shape is different. Worst case is they have to dig out the very...

    The Green Monster Next Door...

Was out in the pool today with the grandkids and saw a guy from one of the local pool companies walk in the backyard next door. I saw him mouth "Oh My God" when he looked into the open maw of the Green Monster. The liner has begun to tear horizontally across the tile pattern area now. He took...

Green again, 3rd SLAM this year, advice please!

Next door neighbor once had a contaminated solar cover. Every time he'd put it on, he'd get algae in the pool. He took the lazy way out and simply replaced the cover. When I went through a SLAM last month, I put the cover on and put everything (toys, tools, floats, etc) in the pool under the...

    The Green Monster Next Door...

Talked to the Green Monster's owner tonight, as they have done nothing with the slime pit since returning from vacation. They were sitting out in their driveway watching the world go by, so I asked what their plan was for GM. Wife says they are going to get a new liner put in at the end of...

Pump sounds like its on but no water flowing

This year, I discovered "Jacks Formula 327 Gasket Lube". I've been plagued with o-ring and gasket leaks every year when opening the pool. This stuff is used very, very sparingly, but it works great on all of those leaky points. I now assemble all pool parts with it and never a leak when...

You Think You Have An Algae Problem...

The city has done over a hundred sample tests at 4 differet EPA labs so far and they can't get the same results from any of them. No idea when the use ban will be lifted and how they are going to purge the system when they do have a fix. Just brought home 7 gallons of bottled water for SWMBO...

Opinions on the quality of filter sand

OP, are you getting a pressure rise between backwashes? What is your psi after and before a backwash? Everyone has told me you don't need to replace sand (unless you're pumping into the pool), just clean it.

Does the skimmer weir (door) have any purpose?

Yes, but what the skimmer does take in will be from the water surface with the weir door in place. Otherwise, the skimmer would pull most of its water from the floor of the skimmer box. It's not the amount of water in question, but where it's taken in. The purpose of the weir door is to force...

    Deep Cleaning a Sand Filter

I can't recall when the pool looked this good after the deep cleaning (and the SLAM). It's been nearly 15 years since I had the filter apart for anything, but I will do this more often now. Even though you have to take an S-200 apart to do it, it's worth it. Great tip and video.

Has one of these ever visited your pool?

Nope. All I ever get is mallard ducks, at least until I remove the winter cover. Then all I get is starlings dropping their nest poop in the pool. Could be worse. I could get the Canadian Geese that are all over the river bank behind us.

Never thought about Lowes for liquid chlorine. Nearby Meijer store has 10% for $12.49 a case ($3.12/gal).

You Think You Have An Algae Problem...

The Toledo area is under a city water emergency since 1:00 AM today due to algae borne microcystin levels that exceed human consumption standards. We've been on bottled water all day and there is no end in sight. Glad I just got our pool cleared up so we have a good stable water source if it...

    Possible Algea/Pool Cover Question

I once had a neighbor that had a contaminated solar cover. Every time he would cover the pool, he'd get algae. Took the lazy way out and bought a new cover. I just finished a SLAM process and I put everything in the pool (tools, toys, floats, etc.) under the cover. I then washed all of them...

    The Green Monster Next Door...

I decided not to wait until Monday as TASD found West Nile carrying mosquitoes less than 5.5 miles upwind from our neighborhood yesterday. That's a third of the distance from the previous report. Local news channels are repeatedly telling viewers to remove standing water from their properties...

Algae after 3 weeks of non-use?

So am I. Shoreland area. I've had mine uncovered since the breakout two weeks ago. Temp's at 80. Don't forget, we are downwind from the Hoffman Road Landfill. Lots of dust from that thing lately.

Algae after 3 weeks of non-use?

Welcome! Where in Toledo? I've been having a tough time the last couple of weeks with what I first thought was silt. Then it became algae which I cleared with a SLAM. I'm being told that we are having a higher than normal algae problem in our area by several different pool companies. I'm...

    The Green Monster Next Door...

The water level continues to drop, more slowly now as there is less pressure on the leak points. The liner is begining to unhook itself from the coping around the sides as the water level drops. If they don't make any effort on the pool this weekend, I'm going to try the city inspection...

    The Green Monster Next Door...

Day 5 and the FC & CC are a bit high and that should come down on its own. Ph and TA are a bit low and I adjusted for it. CYA is nearly dead on. We'll see tomorrow what things look like. Green monster next door is still ugly and it is still leaking down. It's about 6 inches from being back...

    Suddenly SILT!...

Just a closure to this thread. What I thought was silt was really an algae bloom. During the SLAM process, I learned that my filter is working just as it should now. Sorry for the confusion to anyone who reads this tale. Thanks for the help with this one.

    The Green Monster Next Door...

Day 4 of the SLAMfest and the pool is now clear and sparkling. I'll let it go until tomorrow and see what the FC levels look like. PH & CYA are out of whack, but I'm not going to jump on anything chemically today.

    The Green Monster Next Door...

Well, we are starting day 3 of the SLAM and our pool is slowing getting better. Someone took the painter's tape off of the patch yesterday. I didn't see it happen, but it's gone now. The homeowners are not home (still on vacation), so I'm assuming who ever is watching the dogs did it...

    The Green Monster Next Door...

Wife found some references on line that indicated that algae can be spread by air. I'll buy that as this is the first time in 25 years of pool ownership that we have had algae this bad and it's the first time in 24 years that the pool next door has had algae as bad as the photo shows. I guess...
