Newbie with an Intex 14' x 42" and a hill of a problem...

With a deep AGP/small kids, if you take the ladder away the kids can't climb in, so this can be a good safety advantage too.

How often do you add bleach?

I must be lucky - I test every day but usually I only add bleach every other day and never go out of range, 2-4ppm at CYA 30 I have even left the pool completely unattended for 3 full days, topped up CL to about 5ppm before I left and it was still over 2ppm when I got back The pool gets sun...

    Rest Of The World section

+1 for a rest of the world section Thanks to the great info on this forum, and some very specific advice from the ever helpful mods I have kept my very first pool 100% trouble free for two seasons :) But it does take some investigation to make use of TFP wisdom outside the US. For example I...

    Bleach

Welcome to the forum Basil! My summer pool last year was exact same size as yours, it's a wide shallow pool so the CL loss is high at about 4-5 ppm per day when the weather is 30C Using the cheap 1.5% tesco value bleach we get here in the UK that's about 1.2 - 1.5 liters every day for this...

Setting up a new Intex pool HELP!

The PVC fountains are used to help with adjusting TA, but there are plenty of ways to adjust TA without a fountain so you don't need a fountain as such - think of it as an enhancement not a necessity

Switched to Bleach and now adding acid daily

I had real bad Ph bounce due to high TA when I first filled my pool, was adding MA twice a day to start with Test daily and use poolmath to calculate correct MA dose - keep a note of this and you will see that as the TA drops the MA additions get smaller and further apart, until you get to a...

Convincing my wife we need a sand filter......

+1 for get a sand filter, you won't regret it! Worth looking for a used filter/pump set on craigslist, ebay etc. I got a Emaux FSF350 filter & pump set in perfect condition for about $100, even came with plumbing to fit my pool as a bonus! Just needed a deep clean and was good to go (would have...

    MultiCyclone Centrifugal Filter

There are a few threads about the multicylone on TFP, do a search Consensus seems to be that they do work - a poster was even complaining that the Muticyclone was catching the DE powder before it got to the sand filter

Vacuum my pool using my filter pump?

I'm in Europe so perhaps we have different model numbers - but I'm sure you have a better choice locally than we have over here I guarantee you will wonder how you coped without a vac - I lasted about two weeks before getting one, then had to upgrade the pump & filter too +1 for trading up to...

How do I find out the make and model of an above ground pool???

Welcome to TFP - you won't find a better place for advice - good call reading up before getting started! Got my first pool last year, had perfect water all season and didn't have a single issue I couldn't deal with easily thanks to the helpful folk on this forum

Vacuum my pool using my filter pump?

I have bestway vac set 58236, came with a bunch of different size adapters that screw direct onto the side outlets not sure if they are the same size as Intex 2500gph pump should be plenty for suction - I have a sand filter but it's only 1000gph setup and works perfect with the vac Regarding...

    DPD vs OTO vs FAS-DPD

FAS-DPD test is very expensive ($200+ for K2006 or Lammotte 7022!) and hard to find in my part of the world (England) which is strange considering the test was originally developed here by Dr Palin (as in Palintest) I use only DPD tablets and a comparitor and have had no problems, albeit only...

    FC loss guidelines

Isn't the elephant in the room CYA 80? (OP didn't mention a SWG) I think the trick to minimizing FC loss is to try to match CYA level to the individual pool i.e. sun exposure, surface vs depth etc. Obviously cleaning/backwashing and removing organic debris promptly (leaves, dead insects etc.)...

My first ever Pool Story Begins - Intex 32 Feet AGP

Borrates do a great job of keeping bugs away from the pool altogether I used to get lots of dead flying bugs each evening and it was a daily chore to fish them all out (I don't have a skimmer) but after adding 50ppm Borax there were no bugs at all, don't know how this works but it does!

    AGP Depth Question

Of course the other safety advantage of having a deeper AGP is it's much harder for the little ones to climb IN once you take away the ladder

Public pool sanitation requirements in the UK

Thanks for the clarification - so the PWTAG recommended minimum of 0.5ppm FC at <pH7.4 with no CYA is conservative against EPA DIS/TSS-12 On the other hand where CYA is used the PWTAG minimum levels equate to FC/CYA ratio of just 5% which seems to be very low by comparison. In reality most...

Public pool sanitation requirements in the UK

I took the liberty of putting the PWTAG numbers through your spreadsheet to see where HOCl falls out : (@ pH7.4) CYA FC HOCl 50 2.5 0.021 100 5 0.021 HOCl 0.021 is about double the absolute minimum 0.011 required for sanitisation - although this is at the low end I...

Public pool sanitation requirements in the UK

Richard Interesting to note that the PWTAG guidance does seem to indirectly acknowledge the need to increase CL in line with CYA, albeit by specifying a range for each: 11.4.3 Free chlorine levels above 3mg/l should not be necessary in any pool. If this is exceeded, dosing should be reduced...

Public pool sanitation requirements in the UK

Much 'regulation' in the UK is not legally binding but evidence of compliance with certain published standards can be used as a statutory defense against legal liability. The PWTAG COP is referenced by HSG179 so I expect it would fall in this category. There is no mandated UK wide system of...

How much space needed to erect a metal walled AGP?

Hi MrsD Nice to see another Brit on the forum! I have similar problem in the garden space wise, was thinking of getting one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bestway-42-inch-Power-Steel-Frame/dp/B00IBUUOEI Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available in the UK - was looking at getting one...

Seems Like debris is re-entering my pool after filtration

Marc Your water clarity must be great if you can see a few sand particles on the bottom! I had a similar problem after new sand, I just vac it up on filter setting and no more comes out.

No Backwash Option & No Multi-Valve On IG Pool

Oops...my bad  didn't notice you weren't the OP Does my plumbing description make any sense? seems likely to me that the OP has a problem with the suction finding another path when the vac is connected, unless it's just poor suction to begin with.

    Adding a vaccum line

Need to shut off the skimmer too or you won't get much suction though the vac use a 3 port (divert) valve, or a T-piece with 2 valves - one to shut off the skimmer, one to open for the vac or just use a vac plate adapter inside the skimmer bowl - no vac point needed! Fill the vac hose with...

No Backwash Option & No Multi-Valve On IG Pool

Great piece of info there - points right to the problem :thumleft: For safety skimmer outlets can have an alternate path back to the pool - in the UK we call it a "balance pipe" - the idea is to relieve suction if something gets stuck in the skimmer throat (e.g. a child) and also prevents the...

    Vacuum help

No problem glad to help! I have learned so much from this site so it's nice to get a chance to give something back :) If you are happy with your pump filter I would just look out one of the vac kits - they are not very expensive. Most of the AG pool set pumps seem to have about 4-6 hour...

About 45 days into TFPC, a few questions

FWIW, from my observations CYA 30 seems to be a bit of a tipping point I used Dichlor for a while to build CYA up from zero - to stay in range I was consistently adding about 3-4 ppm FC per day, sometimes more when very sunny or lots of kids in the pool! FC loss didn't seem to change much at...

    Vacuum help

You can buy AG vac kits that include hoses and various adapters to connect directly to Intex side outlets - e.g. bestway 58234 or Skooba vac. How big is your pump/filter? any less than 1000 GPH will struggle with a vac, also cartridges get blocked very quick - I ditched the tiny cartridge/pump...
  29. F

No Backwash Option & No Multi-Valve On IG Pool

Vac hose has plenty resistance so the suction will find another path if the resistance is lower e.g. via another skimmer, second outlet on the skimmer, main drain etc. You may need to shut off some of these other outlets so the suction all goes via the vac.

    Chlorine Smell Why?

Could the smell be from standing water on the pool surround? At my local (indoor) public pool CC smell is very noticeable in the changing rooms (but not at all on the poolside) only way I can think it gets there is on the swimmers, or maybe pool water used for wash down.
