You can buy AG vac kits that include hoses and various adapters to connect directly to Intex side outlets - e.g. bestway 58234 or Skooba vac. How big is your pump/filter? any less than 1000 GPH will struggle with a vac, also cartridges get blocked very quick - I ditched the tiny cartridge/pump...

Vac hose has plenty resistance so the suction will find another path if the resistance is lower e.g. via another skimmer, second outlet on the skimmer, main drain etc. You may need to shut off some of these other outlets so the suction all goes via the vac.

Could the smell be from standing water on the pool surround? At my local (indoor) public pool CC smell is very noticeable in the changing rooms (but not at all on the poolside) only way I can think it gets there is on the swimmers, or maybe pool water used for wash down.
