With the cost of SWG cells having doubled, is SWG still the way to go?

I finally got a good run out of a cell (almost 5 years) after multiple 1-2 year failures (they were undersized, among other things). Went to price a new one (Autopilot PPC4) and they've gone from $450 to $800. At $800, that's $160/yr if (big IF) I get 5 years again. Bite the bullet and...

New 1HP motor runs about 5 seconds then stops and just hums.

I thought I'd replaced this thing over the years enough times not to mess it up but either the motor is bad right out of the box or I wired it wrong (if that would even cause this issue). The L1/L2 legs were 180 out from the one that it replaced but I put them on their respective posts (or at...

Can a bad multiport valve allow filter sand back into the pool?

I've chased this issue for a while now. Replaced laterals/standpipe with no change. Had all pool lines pressure and vacuum tested (all passed). Can the valve itself allow sand back into the pool? It's original to the build (about 14 years ago). Appears to work properly otherwise. It's...

Sealant for large temporary underwater repair (vinyl pool)

My (2nd) liner has failed in one corner. Liner installer repaired it twice with some sort of silicone that apparently cures underwater. Unfortunately the liner fit so poorly in the seam where the floor meets the wall that it was always under strain from the water weight. So...the repairs...

    "Hotwire" my pool pump?

It appears my SWG may have died, (checking fuses in a bit). If fuses are good, how can I "hotwire" the pump to run? We have freezing weather moving in. Thanks

    Let's play "Where's my leak?"

OK. Pool definitely has a leak. Lost 4" in 24 hours (this is a new development but has been losing water for a week at a slower rate). When I came home today to the 4" loss, I turned off the starving pump and began to refill the pool. The level yesterday was at the "full" indicator on the...

7 years of misery with this pool. What am I missing? Circulation?

Here's the short version. New pool in 2007. Original installer put a SWG cell that was undersized(SC36) on it. Went to a bigger cell (SC48). No significant changes. Time span-2 years. Ran that size cell(SC48) for about 3 years. Liner failed eventually and pool sat unkept for most over a...

    Time to replace the liner...questions....

I've read that the thickness of the liner doesn't matter. Is that true? I was planning to buy a thicker liner but it's a 10% up charge from 20 mils to 27 mils. My pool is L-shaped. 42 x 24 x 16. I was quoted $3200 for a 20 mil liner (installed). Does that seem about right? Thanks, Richard

Pool won't hold FC - Algae in full bloom

Here's the deal. A week and a half ago, my pool looked great. A week ago, started seeing some algae. No big deal, I've been there before. Shock, Algaecide, Flock, Vac to waste. Had the water tested at the pool store (I was out of CYA reagent for my TFT100 kit). Results: FC - .1 TC - .2 CC...

Hate my SWG system. What should I replace it with?

Local pool supply place (whose owner lives in my neighborhood) recommended an in-line chlorinator. SWG has worked very poorly in my pool. It's green AGAIN and cell appears to be dying. Recommendations and advice welcome! Richard

Going to larger pump. Other considerations?

Well, after fighting this thing for three years I had a pool service come out to give me an estimate on monthly service. The company owner came out and his first comment was that my pump isn't big enough and I don't have enough circulation (something I'd suspected all along). He didnt' try to...

Changed sand, now stuff floating on surface. Normal?

Changed sand in my filter yesterday and this morning I have what can best be described as "dust" on the surface. Is this from the sand change? Something else? I added algeacide yesterday too but saw no foaming, also added salt today right before this stuff appeared.

Can't get FC level and water is cloudy.

Pump died over the winter and I let the pool go. Had a heavy algae build up (pool was green/black). Over the course of the last 3 weeks I've put in: 15# of CYA (in a sock through the skimmer) 30 bottles (182oz) 6% bleach 2 full bottles of clarifier 4# of "shock" Today my numbers are: pH- 7.3...

Liner has "come loose" after heavy rain. What gives?

Seems as if this painful hole-in-the-ground just never runs out of problems to throw at me. I finally got the chemistry problems sorted out at the end of the summer and now have a leak. It appears to be in the underground piping (I haven't dug it up yet). I blocked the skimmers in and allowed...

Fighting Mustard Algae yet again, am I on the right track?

First, let me say a big THANK YOU for all those who contribute to this forum. If I hadn't discovered it, I'd still be paying $$$ to the dolts at the local pool store. I really think they should be required to have some sort of certification in pool chemistry because after all that I've read...
