Well, that was a wet winter

Thanks. I think I have this under control.

Well, that was a wet winter

Present CH is 125. Don’t know the other numbers. Over the years the CH has been in range, heading to the high end.

Well, that was a wet winter

This is the first year after startup in the 15 years my pool has existed that I’ve needed to add calcium to balance its chemistry. Wow, that was a wet winter in Northern California. Not complaining, mind you.

    PH Management with cool water?

Ah, yes, I forgot about those buffers. I do know those levels, so I might play around with that. In the winter, I'm happy with pH sitting near 8.0, but I don't want it to go significantly above that.

    PH Management with cool water?

Or similarly, I assume it would be possible to come up with a table that, based on the number of acid demand drops it takes to bring the pH down to 7.8, you would know the original pH. Has anyone figured that out?

Is SWCG scaling caused by "high" TA?

I don't think so. I tested the pH each day after I rebalanced and it was consistent with about a .2 rise per day from 7.2.

Is SWCG scaling caused by "high" TA?

Yes I had checked a couple of times, and there had been no built-up scale. Other than 4, that pretty much describes the targets I aim for. Thanks for the thoughts.

Is SWCG scaling caused by "high" TA?

I have recently observed a phenomenon in my pool that leads me to propose the following hypothesis: SWCG scaling is caused by relatively high TA levels, whether or not the pool's chemistry is in balance. My pool is three years old. For the first two years I experienced the commonly reported...

    Requirements for Solar

Unless you live in the Southern Hemisphere, in which case it's the other way around. I remember staying in a B and B in New Zealand that had been built by European immigrants about a century ago. They had put in all these big windows on the south to catch the sun. Didn't work out so well.

Can't stand the electric bills anymore...

You might want to have someone come out and do an energy audit on your house. We also live in Northern California, have a 2400 sq ft air-conditioned house occupied by two adults and a teenage daughter and we use less than half the electricity you do.

A challenge - Solar heating for free?

You may want to connect your radiators in parallel, not series. The amount of heat transfered is proportional to the temperature difference, so you'll want to get the water out of the solar heater before it heats up too much.

    Fill poool from fire hydrant

Filling from a fire hydrant is regularly done legally in our area. You go to the water department, they give you a meter that gets hooked to the hydrant, send out a technician to flush the hydrant and bill you for the amount of water used. That's the way mine was filled last year.

Any Pool Calculator feature requests for spring 2009?

I just set up my suggested goal levels for TroubleFreePool.com's recommendations for a SWG and a plaster surface. It says the goal for TA is 60 to 80. If I go to the Pool School's "Water Balance for SWGs" it says the goal for TA is 70 to 90. Not a big difference, but whom do I believe? Thanks...

    UPDATED - PH Issues

Re: PH Issues How old is your plaster? It's my understanding that for the first year curing plaster will contribute to pH rise. In fact, my plaster is about five months old and I'm still adding about a quart of acid a week even with my SWG turned off.

    Dry ice in the pool.....

Our teenage daughter hosted a Halloween party last night. After reading this and other threads, I calculated our pool could handle about five pounds of dry ice. My wife picked it up Friday afternoon. It was pelleted, rather than in a block. We tossed it in to great effect and enjoyment by all...
