    Consistantly high pH

Today's test FC 1.5 (was busy yesterday and forgot to check it); CC 0; pH 8; TA 70; CYA 40; temp 85. The water is crystal clear. Two nights ago we did got about 1 1/2 inches rain. I don't have a rain gauge but a guess from my pool level Friday evening to Saturday morning. JamesW & Zadd, I...

    Consistantly high pH

Woodyp, that does make sense. The rains we had were frog stranglers. With the exception of the last 7-8 days with no rain. The pH regent is almost brand new. Bought it late last year direct from Taylor. And no the bottle is not stained red. During the winter the test kit is stored in the...

    Consistantly high pH

Since I opened the pool on May 27th it's been a constant battle to get my pH to stay in range. I go by the poolcalculator goals. So far this year I've added 13 cups of muratic acid. The pool has remained nice and clear all year and I've averaged 1 1/2 qts of bleach daily. (low reading today was...

Using bleach for other water purfication purposes

I wasn't sure where to post this, so if it would be better somewhere else in the forum let me know. Our city's water treatment plant has been have some issues going on seven days know. We've been under a boil alert since last Friday evening. I won't go into details of what's been reported as...

    Test results ?

First, today's readings--pH 7.8; FC 2; CC 0; T/A 90; CYA 40; temp 82 I keep my FC at 5 so will add 96oz of 6%. No problems there. My pH rose from 7.5 to 7.8 overnight 2 days ago. I like to keep it 7.3 to 7.5. My T/A has been consistant at 90 but I've been thinking of raising to 100-110...

Worst thing ever in your pool?

Nothing as bad as most of the above. But this year, I'm removing dead baby birds from the solar cover almost every day. My son thinks it may be due to a red-tailed hawk that has taken up residence in the neighborhood.

    sodium hypochlorite vs sodium hydroxide

Could be...hope not I've tested the FC and plugged the number into the pool calculator using 5.25% as my number. Added the suggested amount and then tested again an hour later, my new FC was .5ppm within my goal. I did this three days in a row. Regardless, I don't think I'll buy bleach...

    sodium hypochlorite vs sodium hydroxide

Well, I've been used the cheapest K-mart bleach for two days now. Even though the label doesn't list the %, if it's not 6% it's darn close to it. I will buy it again without any second thoughts.

    sodium hypochlorite vs sodium hydroxide

This is Crystal branded. Sold in the K-mart dollar section. I haven't had time to run an 'eyeball' test to try to estimate the %. I may try this evening after the sun goes down to eliminate chorine loss due to sunlight.

    sodium hypochlorite vs sodium hydroxide

Three years ago, all I could find around here was 5.25% in gal. bottles. Two years ago, I noticed the bottles were 96oz. and at the same price of the old gal. bottles. I was p.o.ed. They were ripping us off. When I read the new labels and saw 6%, I cooled off a bit. As I tried to say in the...

    sodium hypochlorite vs sodium hydroxide

Well, I may have bought the wrong thing. K-mart is selling 96oz bottles bleach for $1.00. That's about the best price I have seen for a while. So I went to check it out. The first thing I noticed is that the label doesn't give the percentage of sodium hypochlorite. In the past, I stay from...

    Not a great opening day.

That's kind of what I was thinking. I used to have a photobucket account. If I can find it or start another one...sorry to be a bit slow here, it's getting late...is there a help section here that says how to do post a picture. Another quick ? Does troublefreepool have an android app? I'd...

    Not a great opening day.

Just opened the pool today. Not looking good. I'm topping it off right now so I haven't done any testing yet. The main issue a lot of green hovering around the bottom. Is there a way to post a picture? I'm trying to decide how I want to tackle it. One thought is after the pool is filled...

Help - ready to make it a tennis court instead!!

So, Jazz, it's been over two weeks. What happened? Does the wife have a new tennis court?:-D The people here are great. They WANT to help. I'm not sure how long this website has been running but I could have used it around 7 years ago. I had a similar situation. The pool store was...

    starting to green

I'm not going to say "victory" yet but...knock on wood...it's looking better. The rest of the tests from last night and this a.m. are: yesterday 8:40pm-FC 17; CC .5 9:40pm-FC 17; CC 0; pH 7.5 (I decided not to test an hour later) 8:10am (today) FC 16.5; CC 0: pH 7.5 I haven't taken the cover...

    starting to green

Thanks, duraleigh. Actually, two days ago, I decided to raise my goal to 6. But, too little, too late, me thinks. Jason, thanks for your clarification. It may be worse than I thought. Here's my readings so far. 1:00p FC 16.5 (this was an hour after initial shock) 3:10p FC 14 added 1 qt...

    starting to green

I run the pump 24/7 except I turn it off the night before I plan to vacum. History of chlorine levels (all dates, this month): 15th-2; 18th-1.5; 19th-3.5; 23rd-2 (started using 6 as goal); 26th-.5 (left the solar cover off as temp was too high for my comfort-I like low 80's); 29th-4.

    pH is high..help

I'll second that Muratic Acid is potent stuff. We used it to 'bleach' the wood decks on the Cutter I was stationed on in the Coast Guard back in the '70's. I can't remember how many pairs of jeans I ruined by having that stuff (even diluted) splash up on me.

    starting to green

Just in the last couple weeks the pH has been rising slowly. So, if I understand you correctly, I should add the 2 cups of MA to bring the pH down to 7.5. I will, but I just added the bleach. Does the pH affect the disinfecting action of the bleach? I don't know how this will affect...

    starting to green

I didn't know if I should post this here or under testing because I have questions on both. First my readings: FC-4; CC 0; TC 4; pH 7.8; T/A 130; CH 90; CYA 40; Temp 84 For 'Goals' I used Traditional/Bleach/Vinyl. water is cloudy but can still see bottom (looking a little green down there...

    TF-100 and Bromine pool

You're preaching to the choir, here. This is what I'm trying to get thru to him. Yes it is an outdoor pool. But to my question....being that the pool is Bromine and my test kit is a TF-100, will the tests for pH, TA and CH be accurate. I need a second opinion to convince him on the savings...

    TF-100 and Bromine pool

I'm assuming that I can't use the TF-100 to test for Bromine (except for the K-1000 kit that came with it.) But, will the pH, TA, CH tests be accurate? I'm trying to convert my brother to the joys of chlorine and the BBB method. He just went to a local pool store, which will remain nameless...

    Chlorine levels for closing???

Thanks, I was kinda wondering about that. And I did wonder how much the sunlight would affect it. I did check it again an hour after adding the 5.25 and it was 16.5. Another hour later, down to 14.5. So I'll check it after sunset, then again tomorrow morning to compare. Bright sun today and...

    Chlorine levels for closing???

This is my first year with TFP and have really enjoyed it. Now, I'm in the process of closing. I've cleaned all the leaves, backwashed and tested the water. Also, read the closing section in PS. I've also went through many of the posts in this section and am now confused. In PS, it says to...

    closing woes-pool light

How far did you drain the pool below the return opening? In 'Pool School,' it recommends 6 inches. Last year I didn't drain it far enough and had the same problem. I believe it was because of snow/ice accumulation on the cover pushing down and then raising the water. I think you can buy some...

    Best Leaf Rake

Are you cleaning leaves from the bottom of the pool? I've found a 'leaf vac' to be the best for me. I picked one up from a local store a couple years ago. I don't remember what I paid for it. You attach it to your multi-use pool pole and attach a garden hose to it. The garden hose (when you...
