DE and 10 oz coffee can

Hi everyone....I saved what I thought was a "1 pound coffee can". It is 10 ounces. Since I don't have a DE scoop at home....does anyone know the equivalent? I have a Pentair FNS 48 so I think I need to add 4.8 pounds. Anyone know how many " cans" that is? Thx

    Hayward Navigator opinions?

The pool cleaner that came with my home purchase 8 months ago is on its last legs. It is an older model hayward that worked well until now. I have a small pool and a suction style is fine for our needs. Any thoughts on the Navigator? I've heard good and bad. Thanks!

    Pool cleaner hose twisting

Hi everyone! I've been going great being a new pool owner following the TFP/BBB method. However, recently I have a new issue. Our pool came with a hayward pool cleaner (I think it is an older version of the navigator). The last week the hose keeps getting twisted so it will not work/move...

    Tile crack and water leak

Hi, I noticed a wet spot in my tile this morning. Upon closer inspection, there is a crack. I had seen the crack before don't remember the water seeping. It must be coming from the spa, as this area is on the wall to the raised spa. Any advice in how to repair? We bought this house in March...

    All boric acid created equal?

Thanks to this forum, I'm ready to try borates. I've been very happy using The BBB method and am now ready to kick it up a notch. I've decided to do boric acid instead of borax and muriatic acid, simply for ease. I found some online from cq concepts, 5 pounds for $16. Is all boric acid the...

    Rust stains on pebble tec

We bought a house that came with a pool in March. In the deep end mostly, there were several rust-like spots on the bottom, BB size. Today I noticed one on the side of the pool, about a foot from the surface, so I'm ruling out actual things left in the pool to rust. My questions, any idea...

    Coping mastic/caulk cracking

Hi, we bought a home with an existing pool in March. I've finally got the pool dialed in with BBB and my TF 100. :-D We had noticed an odor that we thought was the water. We found out the odor is coming from the area where there was water penetration and likely mold where the mastic has...

    Bleach ?

My bad.......I had the borax confused. Needed to go back to pool school :o So, If I understand correctly, BBB is a process and not only about using baking soda/borax/bleach. Makes so much sense to only add what your pool needs and not all the pool store gimmicky stuff. I also like the...

    Bleach ?

Thanks everyone! I want to become a BBB purist! Just had to add a little muriatic as my ph crept up. Almost on my way to using borax instead!

    Bleach ?

I'm a proud participant in TFP and tell all my friends about this site! I want to make the switch to BBB once my last Boyle of acid is gone  Regarding "bleach" for BBB. Is this only household bleach or also pool chlorine? Label reads the same "sodium hypochlorite". I've been...

    New #'s with TF 100

Thanks Jason. I know FC is too low, that is why I just added chlorine. I will test again tonight. I think I will also recheck CYA just to be sure. Should I do anything about TA of 90?

    New #'s with TF 100

Since I'm still a novice with my pool and TF 100, I just want to share to see if I'm on the right track. Just did a partial drain/refill 2 days ago (for high CYA) so I'm getting things back in order. FC 1 TC 1.5 CH 280 pH 7.4 TA 90 (seems a bit low) CYA 70 - 80 Temp 79 degrees In doing the...

I love that you water your lawn with the drain. We just did that last night. Had to drain to lower CYA

    Found odor source: cracks

Hi...we moved to our new home 4 months ago. It happened to come with a pool and spa, a definite plus in our eyes! Well, over time(not sure how old the pool is) it looks like there are settling cracks in the deck and in some of the tile. (I'm in so cal, so no real cold weather, just occasional...

    Goal CYA level

Hi, I'm a bit confused by what my goal CYA level should be. I've read levels of 30 -40 and others at around 80, depending on the amount of sunlight your pool gets. I live in Southern California, pool faces north east and gets sun most of the day. What should my goal CYA be? Thanks! :-D

    Lowering CYA

First, I want to say I am so thankful I found this board! I love learning how to be in control of my pool!! My CYA is high, about 110. I bit the bullet and am doing a partial drain today. My handy husband (who by the way is clueless about the chemical balance since that is my job) hooked up...

    Shock and high CYA

I would like to exchange the water gradually in order to use the water on my lawn, but this will probably take too long to lower the CYA in a timely fashion. Will have to give this some more thought. Thanks for all the help. It is much appreciated.

    Shock and high CYA

No, I don't smell bleach, indicating chloramines. It smells kinda organic to me (earthy) but I'm not sure. Odor remained even after cleaning filter and new DE. It is quite a puzzle.

    Shock and high CYA

More info. I have a small amount of algae I noticed on the tile grout. I have also noticed an intermittent odor (can't really describe) when in the jacuzzi with the jets on. Could this algae be causing the odor? Water itself smells fine. I have read over the shock process briefly but will...

    Shock and high CYA

Hi, I have a couple of questions. I am going to shock my pool for the first time (the real way with liquid and not powdered "shock"). My CYA is 100 so. Know I need LOTS of chlorine per the calculator. My questions: 1. Is it better to do a partial drain first (few inches so I can water my...
