I just bought this house and I was told the pool is 40 years old. I haven't opened the filter yet - so it hasn't had any maintenance. I don't see a model # on the filter - only vari-flo valve is on the control dial

How would I know if there is a tear in my filter - Hayward filter - IG - 10,000 gals When I put fresh DE in I see some shoot back into the pool via the water return and the pool store is telling me this might be a possibility.

water is still cloudy - I shocked it on Saturday and it was clear then I vacummed; shocked it again last night but not clear yet. The pool guy yesterday said to shock it every 24 hours until it stays clear - is that right?

After adding shock, how long should I leave the setting on my filter to recirculate before I turn it to filter?
