Back almost exactly one year later to open again! A few questions

It's that time, landlord had a pool guy come open it up. Pump up and running, 2gal chlorine & some pucks in, and a beautifully dark green swimming pool. I'm woefully underprepared as he came earlier than expected. I have no chlorine and no R-0871 reagent. Yay :D Already backwashed it once...

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

Alright, so after the past two month's of crazy power bills for the pool house, I have ordered replacement stops for the timer dial connected to the pool pump. It's been running 24/7 since we opened late April, so planning to test and see if running it less lowers the power bill. Previous...

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

Gotcha. I see it in stock 13 minutes away. PoolMath says 18oz would lower it to 7.6 from 8.0. I'll pick some up after work in the next day or two and add it. Does a pool above 8 pH become unsafe to swim in, or what is the concern with out of range pH? Just curious.

At what point will it be necessary to address the pH? And by dose, I suppose you mean with Muriatic acid? Is this a liquid or powder chemical? I'll have to find some.

Safe to put discharge in yard when lowering CYA?

Our backwash/drain goes under the ground and points to the ditch in the yard leading into the water company's drainage system I would assume. I imagine if you're wondering whether you can send it into a drain, it may vary by city/state, a quick call to your water department may clear it up.

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

Back for some advice regarding pH test: But first, Pool's still running crystal clear, thanks to everyone's help! Here's an update photo: Now, I've been running the simpler chlorine test (the one that goes up to 10 in the Taylor kit) just to make sure I'm above 8 or at least within range each...

    Am I finished SLAMing?

I would go by the OCLT results. If you pass that & water is crystal clear you should be good, but make sure you pass. Maybe run two in a row :ROFLMAO: Measuring loss during the day is tough because there are multiple factors involved (sunlight + potential algae) that you can't differentiate...

    Low CYA help

can confirm, check the bottles. it took 4-5 rinses of my bottle when I used it. I dumped what I could, threw the bottle in recycling. Realized my levels had not changed. Luckily bottle was still there, look inside, and tons of chalky stuff stuck to the insides. Guess that was most of the CYA...

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

Photo update: The pool house ends up blocking half the pool with shade around this time of day, but you get the idea. All thanks to the super helpful folks here!

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

Yeah, the colors are pretty close together. Hard to differentiate 7.5 and 10 on the color block. But I suppose it'll do until I order more R-0871 or whatever the titrating drops are :ROFLMAO:

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

Trust me, I'll never go below 8 :ROFLMAO: I will be topping off FC levels before I go to bed, for peace of mind. At least now I should be able to test with the easier chlorine test in the kit!

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

Official post-slam test results: FC = 8.5 CC = 0 pH = 7.4 TA = 90 CH = 140 CYA = 50 Seems like I'm in the clear as far as being in range, any thoughts?

    Pump sometimes surges

My pump was not fully priming yesterday after I backwashed, I was so confused. Checked the skimmer while it was running & still not priming and the water level just wasn't high enough, weir door was allowing air into the skimmer line. Let it fill back up to 1/2 up the skimmer and it stopped. I...

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

Alright, OCLT passed this morning! FC is currently at 12ppm. Unfortunately it's cloudy and gloomy outside, but water is still crystal clear. Hoping the sun comes back soon so we can bask in the glory of a clean pool. Still seeing some brown stuff in front of that one return jet, just been...

How do clueless owners fix algae bloom?

Indeed, this is my first season with a pool, but previous tenants didn't use TFP (I know them personally), the pool was always swaying from green back to blue. I didn't want that, so I immediately started researching and found this website. Took me a few weeks to actually understand the advice...

How do clueless owners fix algae bloom?

Well, my strategy was to eventually find TFP and convert. Though I never tried paying a pool company, I imagine it's expensive :ROFLMAO:

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

That's a heck of a thread haha! Hopefully this one doesn't get that long. Cleaned and sanitized everything I could yesterday, and brought FC back up to slam level. Didn't see anymore dead algae by the ladder this time, but I still saw a few spots of it on the other side. It should be noted it...

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

This feels like a personal blog at this point hahaha, but my roommates are tired of hearing me yap about the pool :ROFLMAO: Ladders are out and sanitized with bleach to the best of my ability, Took the caps off the ends and flushed the insides of the ladder's poles with chlorine and water &...

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

Makes sense! Thanks for the explanation. I definitely don’t want to leave anything to chance, ladders will be coming out and I will be dumping bleach in them & all around 🤣 Is there any risk of algae being in my suction vacuum head or the hose? It’s been out of water for a couple days (hose...

Advice on shocking a green pool & followup?

Got it. Will be making a trip to Walmart after work for more chlorine. Will clean the ladders & see about the skimmer, and re-up the water with FC to slam level. Hopefully not too much FC is lost since this morning but I’m betting it’ll be around 10-15ppm due to sun. The slam continues!
