    Silver bubble insulation (reflectix-type stuff)

In addition to installing a fountain on the pool inlet, we also wrapped the pool in reflectix-type bubble foil stuff. We put the stuff in our RV windows while they are being hit with direct sunlight, so it occurred to us to do the same for the pool. We bought the right sized roll from Amazon...

    Fountain for cooling Intex pool

Since my pool is getting so hot, I searched threads for awhile and didn't see much of anything talking about attaching to Intex without a trip to home depot to rig together a connection. I found one on Amazon that fits both standard threads and also includes an adapter for Intex fittings. The...

    Pool patches

The above ground pool we have now is the first time we have had multiple holes in the bottom. We looked for patches that can be applied underwater. Home depot had gorilla and flex tape, makers of flex seal. I was talked into the flex tape. It did a good job of sticking initially and the tape...

    Skimmer sweep

In the past, I had an Intex where I installed the Hayward skimmer. That was several years ago. This weekend we got a Funsicle with a built in skimmer. It's the same as the summer waves pools. A round skimmer opening. A lot of the small spring tree junk isn't getting sucked in that great. I...

    Returning after 7 years

Where are the test kits that used to be sold here? I can't find them. Have to say I'm not a fan of the revised site, maybe I'm being hasty in my thoughts.

    skimmer plate/thingy

After years of successful TFP maintenance of my AGPs, I'm pretty much taking over care of an in-ground pool about 30 miles from my house. So please be patient as I will probably ask a bunch of newbie questions all over again. The pool has a skimmer and bottom drain but only 1 pipe coming out...

    Mom's pump went kaput

Jason, I think you just helped answer the question I came out here for. I found out today that Mom's pump went kaput and I am looking into suggesting a 2-speed pump. Currently she has a 3/4 hp single speed Hayward 750 (that has had issues almost every year) for a 15k gallon gunite pool with a...

    Finally hard plumbed my Intex!

I have been pondering it for a long time and spent lot a of time staring at my setup wondering how I would do it. Following are some pics. I will post later with a parts list as I did it a bit different from how some others have done it. I got the box adapters at Lowes but it seems they have...

    added de to sand filter

After 3 years of happy sand filter ownership, out of boredom I finally got around to adding DE to my sand filter. My water was really clear but I wanted to play around. I got harassment from a buddy of mine who said that my water was great so why bother. Leave it alone! I backwashed and...

omg, I don't know what to do...

...with all of my free time since TFP has given me my 3rd summer with near perfect nearly maintenance free water! LOL  Just wanted to re-thank everyone for all the goodness and saving me from my first 2 years of AGP headaches. :lovetfp: The only problem so far this summer (weather...

    Filter Bag Backwash FAIL

I decided to try what was suggested to me. Use the same filter bags folks are using to allegedly increase filtering capabilities. It seemed to make sense. A sand filter goes down to typically 20-30 microns, right? Some folks (based on threads I've searched) seem to think that putting a 1-5...

    Hayward skimmer mod

I discovered that there is no 'stop' on the thru the wall skimmer like there is on an in-ground skimmer. So when the pump turns off, the weir can flop in/out of the opening, letting previously trapped stuff float back into the pool. So I created my own stop. I used a window sash lock screwed...

    drink table - Revised!

I read through some threads about various drink tables that hang on the side rails. The Intex one on Amazon is no longer available, and besides it was a bit small. I spent a couple of hours making laps around Home Depot assembling various contraptions. I put one together with PCV and decided...

    filter bags for backwash

Last year when I was frustrated with water turnover in a small pool, plus messing up my small patio home yard by backwashing, I ran across y_not who suggested using the duda diesel filter bags. Just clamp one over the discharge hose and point it back into the pool. Since sand filters are...

how badly am i failing OCLT test?

The criteria for completion include FC loss of <1ppm but I haven't stumbled across anything that helps quantify how miserably one is failing the test. If I missed it somewhere, sorry. For the last two nights my OCLT has been between 3-4ppm. How bad is that? I'll admit, I'm being kind of a...

    CC change w/o FC change?

Hi All, I've been around here for a while and had the most successful pool season in 2012 thanks to you guys and gals. I got my 14' x 48" AGP setup 2 weeks ago. I've been adding packets of dichlor I had left over from last year in order to both chlorinate and add CYA. I have been trying to...

    unexpected test results

Background: I have a TF-100 but haven't been using it b/c for 2 months now I was expecting to drain the pool any day b/c of landscaping I'm going to get done. I have just been winging it so far, just using the OTO test to make sure I had at least the minimum FC. It's worked out so far. Well...

    paver pricing

I got a quote today for laying some pavers in my back yard. It seemed high, but then again I always have sticker shock with such things. For instance the fence I had replaced after someone drove their car through it. Ugh. Anyway, it is using the pavers shown in the pic below. They're about...

does it matter what is under my pool?

Hi All, Spring is approaching and it is close to when I need to think about setting up my pool. This will be my 5th year with an Intex pool, and each year has been a different one... varying in size and also graduating from easy set to Ultra Frame plus sand filter and SWG. Every year I have...

    white elephant ideas...

Hi TFPers, I have a holiday party coming up where I need to get a tacky white elephant gift. I'm looking for some ideas. Anyone have some good ones? I have another one that I go to each year but the gifts are more practical rather than tacky... so i'm having trouble thinking of funny stuff...

First tests w/TF 100 surprised me...

Hi all, I got my TF100 in the mail today. My initial tests look strange in the chlorine department. PH = 6.8 TA = 50 (but isn't this the one that is affected by high FC?) Hardness = 260 CYA = 60 FC = 13.5 CC = .5 (not too surprising I guess, there are a ton of acorns on the bottom for the...

    Hayward thru-wall connection question

What is the larger set of threads for? It's approx 3" O.D. The instructions don't mention it at all. For now, I connected my Intex hose using a clamp. It's ok for temporary purposes but not real rugged. I could only slip it on as far as the lip inside the hose, about 1.5 inches.

    Getting rid of my 2012 pool - 12' x 36" Intex Ultra-Frame

I bought a bigger pool a few weeks ago when they were on clearance at Wal-Mart (although I usually hate that store!). :P Since it is in good shape, I find it difficult to just toss it in the trash. If anyone wants it, or knows someone who wants it and is local (Houston area) just let me...

    Wanda and acorns

I have searched many threads and haven't seen where anyone specifically addressed whether Wanda the Whale/Diver Dan will pick up acorns. I get quite a number of them. Thanks!

    backwash discharge

Hey folks! This is my first season to have my Intex combo sand filter SWG. Since the use of these things is kinda portable, the odds of having access to a sewer line like you do with an in-ground pool... where and how are you directing your backwash discharge? For now, i'm just blowing it...
