It allows you to use 3rd party SWGs such as Hayward/GoldLine with a Jandy Panel. Jandy used to support 3rd party SWGs but now if you try to connect a non-Jandy SWG to a Jandy panel, it will lock out all future SWG communications including to a Jandy SWG! http://www.chlorinatortranslator.com/

Autelis make a PDA interface for mobile devices. If you upgrade your Aqualink firmware to ver. MMM which requires a chip only (not an entire new board) you can use the full Autelis interface and get more functionality, better speed and home automation capability.

Update: two years later, the 'select' button is starting to come loose again and needs re-gluing. Other than that the PDA is still going strong.
