    Pool Chlorine Issue

You're probably going to want to stick with bleach. AFAIK, the only form of chlorine that won't mess with your CYA is lithium shock which is very, very expensive and only comes in powdered forms (no tabs for feeders). Bleach is pretty inexpensive and once you get into the habit of it, the daily...

    Need to shock so often?

:goodpost: Stacia, welcome to TFP! :swim:  Pool school will change your pool ownership life for the better. Knowledge is power and you'll end up spending a lot less time taking care of your pool; as a bonus, your pool will be unbelievably clear like you might have never seen a pool...

    Pool Chlorine Issue

You want to keep the chlorine at shock level throughout the whole process. With work and other responsibilities it may slip a little below that, but try to keep it above that level as much as possible (I'll admit, I've never actually gone through the SLAM process, my pool has behaved pretty well...

    Pool Chlorine Issue

The higher your CYA, the higher you have to hold your FC for the slam. You'd be better off lowering the CYA before beginning. Bleach does not add to your CYA level, which is why it is the best form of chlorine for a pool. Trichlor and other stabilized forms of chlorine (Trichlor is the 1" and...

    Pool Chlorine Issue

Yes, you pour bleach into the pool into your return jet (where the water streams back into your pool after going through the filter). That disperses the bleach around. You'll want to keep the filter running 24/7 throughout the whole process and you should be good at long as you maintain shock...

New House, OLD pool, LOTS of questions

Do you have your own test kit? That will be essential to proper maintenance of your pool! If you don't, we highly, highly, highly recommend the TF-100 kit. You are going to need Cyanuric Acid. You can buy it almost anywhere that has pool chemicals. Get the granule version, not liquid (it'll...

    Pool Chlorine Issue

You have no free chlorine and your CYA is on the high end of what we recommend. You should add some bleach right away to bump your FC up, having no FC is going to allow stuff to grow really fast. At the top of the page is "PoolMath" which you can use to see how much bleach you need to add to get...

Great work! Keep it filtering and get swimming!

    "Repairing" a buried AG pool

I can't tell from your pictures how structurally sound the pool itself is. Obviously the walls outside the pool are in rough shape, but the pool looks OK. Still, it's a 25 year old pool... not sure what I'd do in this situation

    Clorox or chlorinating liquid?

Hi mbusd. I usually add bleach in front of the jet so it disperses quickly, but I know some people do other methods. If you pump is running, it will eventually mix up fine. Don't add to the skimmer though, you don't want super concentrated chemicals flowing through your equipment.

Trying to plan out Adding Deck Jets (if it will work)

I know that the Never Lube valves are expensive, but IMO they are worth it. I have one even on my above ground equipment (along with one Jandy check valve). Ball Valves get brittle in the sun so that handle will crack right off one time when you try to turn it. Then you'll have to bring a wrench...

Should I replace the sand after clogging the filter?

You don't have valves that you can use to shut off the water supply to the pump equipment? If you have those, you should be able to take apart the filter even with the pool filled.

    DE filter vs. cartridge filter

I think it's funny how pool builders throw undersized cartridges on pools then tell people they are high maintenance. First season we didn't have to clean the cartridges mid-season, and last year we only had to do it once.

Algae - SLAM (or use Shock?)

Rain adds a lot less water volume to your pool than you'd except. Just assume your CYA is exactly the same as before. You're probably on the upswing now, so keep that FC level up for a little longer! The sand filter will be doing the heavy lifting of clearing the dead algae out of the water now...

Anybody else's cat ever fall into their pool?

Ours fell in once last year. He swam around out of necessity, but certainly didn't enjoy it! We pulled him out and dried him off, and then noticed how much softer his fur was after the incident.

Pump and Filter Recommendation for New 27' AG pool

Some of us up north will never get our pool water to 80 without the help of a heater. The summer before getting a heater our pool swung around between 65-75. 65 is a little cold for swimming. Once getting the heater and using it to help push the pool into a warmer range, we got a lot more use...

Algae - SLAM (or use Shock?)

Not a big deal at all. I get some sand in the pool and I have a cartridge, not sand filter! If the eyeball has a stream of sand coming out, then you have a problem.

Algae - SLAM (or use Shock?)

I agree to wait on DE. Sand will do the job of cleaning the pool, it just takes it longer.

Algae - SLAM (or use Shock?)

Chlorine will be consumed in odd patterns when fighting a swamp. Stirring up the leaves increase the water circulation through the part that needed chlorine the most, thus burning through more FC. Completely normal to happen. The more leaves you get out the better! Pics?

How often should I run all of the tests in the kit?

I personally use an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of testing and conditions of the pool. Just takes a few minutes to record data each day.

freshwater silver ion system vs. other santizer system

Not at all. MPS doesn't sanitize, it only oxidizes Combine Chloramines (which get "burned off" by the sun and FC anyways under normal circumstances). He's wrong and trying to sell you expensive MPS. Don't be afraid to switch on your next fill!

Algae - SLAM (or use Shock?)

You still have a lot of organic matter in the pool, so hold at slam level. CC is Combined Chloramines. The test for it is step 5 of the Chlorine drop test in your TF-100. I Copy and pasted from their website since I don't have the reagent names memorized (and since I live in Ohio, my pool hasn't...

Pump and Filter Recommendation for New 27' AG pool

Not sure exactly what you mean by "suction", but in an AGP, the water is gravity fed down into the pump, so the pump "self-primes" as its called. Some IGP's have the pump above the water line, so the pump has to prime itself (or in some cases, be primed by the user) to start the flow of water...

    jets in pool

The one that you think switches between the drain and skimmers is important! (It should be before the pump if that's how you figured that out). Keeping the drain on a little will really help with the circulation in the bottom of the pool.

    jets in pool

We need a little more details. Do you mean your pool has multiple jets, or there is no water coming our of your pump return (eyeball fitting)? I assume you mean multiple jets, so there should be some kind of way to split the flow between them in your plumbing system. There should be some handles...

Algae - SLAM (or use Shock?)

I love reading this thread! Keep on going! You are going to burn a LOT of chlorine since you have all that organic matter in the pool. The more leaves you can get out, the smoother the process will go.
