I have the same problem. My cheap solution is to wear flip flops and take them off right at the stairs so I have them when I get out.

I always use the pool calculator so I know I am adding the proper amt. whether I am adding bleach, borax or muriatic acid. It takes less than a minute and I feel confident on how much and what I am adding.

I know they sell special pool cover pumps that come on automatically when there is enough water. We use a submersible sump pump. It has a lame basket the previous owners put it in to keep leaves from clogging the pump. It works.
