Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

Thanks. That worked great :) I'm using a shop vac to vacuum up all the brown bits / gunk as it appears. After another 4 lots of teaspoon amounts every 30 minutes or so I seem to have got to a level where a new teaspoon only creates snow white foam. In total it took about 10 rounds, I honestly...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

I ended up buying a CMP DEL AOP SPA widget, which allows for a bypass after the heater to put water through Ozone and then UV for the benefits of both plus the ·OH you get when they are combined. I am hoping this will be a kick-butt after-party chloramine buster, will post results as I collect...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

    (y) Great spa-tech knowledge here, would have been a tragedy if I had implemented this and then found the ozone only ran for 30 minutes instead of the 12 hours. Ok, thanks very much for that feedback! Might be a logarithmic reduction curve due to needing physical proximity between the ozone...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

You have been so helpful Methuselah! I'm sorry, my wording wasn't clear. When I said "you" I meant @RDspaguy, not "in general". Maybe I should have posted over in that thread. In Post #5 by @RDspaguy in New spa- Why bother with Dichlor? Why not CYA and bleach he seems to suggest that if he hits...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

@RDspaguy your insightful personal necdotes on ozonators over in this thread is very interesting I've got a closed portable tub with a Saltron Mini. It's usually closed for a few days at a time. I have it FC and relatively PH stable. It handles "me + 1" situations AOK but I'm trying to make...

    DPD Chlorine Test Is Cloudy

As this is the second Google result for "DPD test cloudy".... I just bumped my CH up to 530 from 360 and noticed this change in behaviour immediately, so I figured it must be the calcium I added, and the Taylor's FAQ appears to confirm that and CaOCl2's post above. The first Google result is...

Saltron Mini, Marquis spa, and dead heater with corrosion

Thanks very much for this datapoint @dndrich! Mine (old, second hand, unknown history) just died a few weeks after switching to salt / Saltron, but I had salt up at 3000ppm rather than 2000ppm. What ppm were you running? I'll be sure to post here when the replacement goes (which is a stainless...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

Welp, my heater gave out today, when the element terminals are connected it trips the GFCI. I think that took all of about 3 weeks... no idea how old it was as I bought the spa second hand. Tube has manufacturing date of 2005, and uses an incoloy element. When I did this first ever balance, I...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

Sorry for not being clear! TA increase today was from me adding bicarb. I tested FC/CC, PH, CH, TA, and the TA test was "half way between green and red" after 4 drops, my interpretation was that meant a TA of about 45. I figured it couldn't hurt to bring it up a bit more to 60 or 70 so I added...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

Couple more weeks of experience and I'm getting the hang of it. Good call on checking the filters. I found my filters, which I was cleaning only with fresh water via a hose jet, contained a lot of bug matter in the edges of the pleats. All those flying ants, and innumerable mosquitos, all ended...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

I've worked that out, it's about 1.2 FC per person per hour, which translates to about 17ml of our 12.5% Cl here. This is actually a brilliant idea. I could rig up an arduino circuit with an up/down button, you just adjust the number up from 0 to however many people are in the spa at the time...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

Thanks, done and done. I gave my filters a thorough high pressure wash out (the last time was 3 days ago), and they did have a lot of dead mozzies and other tiny insect matter in there. I'm guessing the extra matter would be a contributing factor to the Cl consumption. I'll put a mesh net across...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

Thanks for the wisdom Matt. FYI this tub had an Ozone generator, but it filled up with water at one point (failed valve I believe) so I just removed it. We'll see how things pan out in the future once I start feeding the right end of the horse and get some experience with that.

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

Thanks very much Matt. This forum and community is a treasure. What I see is that if I want to be able to throw a big party, and not have to babysit the spa every 2 hours, I am going to need some kind of extra firepower. I like to over-engineer things where possible, sometimes that gets me into...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

Thanks. I'm now on day 5 of keeping Cl at 12+ and CCs have been interminably stubborn. I'm down today to 0.21, yesterday was 0.3, I'm losing about 0.1 per day. Saltron running 24x7 and also manually adding Cl. I "feel" more progress is made with the cover completely off and in full sun (which...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

Thanks for (a) reading my whole long message and (b) your advice! :) I understand and agree with your sentiment. I have been very scared, too scared apparently, to have elevated Cl levels. Your comment about being reactive rather than proactive is spot on. I honestly hadn't even considered...

Thanks! I have never got in the water when I had it at shock levels. I feel my hands dry up just putting them in to get the elbow deep water samples (whether imagined or not). Thanks for the info about NCl3. Here is my update one week on. I followed your collective advice as closely as...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

I apologize for any confusion. I was just answering mdragger's question about whether I meant to say CC or FC. What I'm trying to do moving forward? Switching to TFP method for my spa (CYA60/steady FC5), using a Saltron Mini. I'm using the water from my pool to ensure all the levels start right...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

I did mean FC. Not using TFP method for spa currently. Currently my method for enjoying a "no itch" spa is: 1. Dump spa then fill up from the tap (water is a bit yellowish out of the tap) 2. Add liquid Cl to SLAM (FC12+, CYA0) 3. Leave the cover on overnight 4. Next morning take the cover off...

Saltron Mini - How often to open the cover and "let the CCs out"?

Thanks for your advice and personal experience Jim. Water is cheap and plentiful here at the moment, as opposed to electricity and chemicals, but I like to have a spa every other day. It takes 18 hours to heat up, so I'm keen to find a way to keep it hot all the time.

It's the Australian brand name for Ahh-some (correction, "Pipe Klenz" not Spa Klenz). I note it comes in liquid form not gel, though.

The last thread on the topic of leaving your spa cover off to "let the CCs out" I can find was in 2010: https://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/leaving-spa-cover-off-after-adding-chlorine.17772/ However there has been other mentions of needing to do this such as this in 2020. I thought I...

The mysteries of my Lanark Cantwell Bay

Thanks so much! I wasn't actually talking about the low amp setting, I have that disabled and it happily draws ~34A with all the jets on and heater running, and electrician is happy my circuit supports that. I was just wondering if there is a way to put in a 6KW heater element or similar. I get...

The mysteries of my Lanark Cantwell Bay

@RDspaguy - many thanks for your help in May. Question - on colder days the heater is can sometimes be a little underpowered to keep the temp steady. It will drop half a degree an hour on a cold day with people in it. It has the original 3.6KW heater installed. I note the circuit diagram says...

Spa: Hairline crack in a tricky spot - additive repair possible?

Just looping back here to say that the JB Weld plastic bonder worked very well. However it was a little thin when working upside down. Gravity was pulling it away from where I wanted it to stay. I found it hard to get a nice thick amount on using multiple layers before it ran out. I mixed the...

Spa: Hairline crack in a tricky spot - additive repair possible?

Thanks very much Herman! I have found a local stockists of the JB Weld Plastic bonder (repco), and will use that. Great to hear you had a nice time here in 2017! If you ever come back give me a buzz and I will have a cold beer waiting for you!
