pH Ceiling - Henry's Law of solubility of gas - Richard Falk chart of values

Jacks #2 treatment (sulfamic acid) followed by lots of dilution worked for me.

Alternatives to Jack’s Magic #2 Copper and Scale Stuff - Sulfamic Acid

I have successfully treated scale in my pool with Jack’s #2 - sulfamic acid. I am now helping a friend remove stains from his pool. We used the Jack’s ID kit to identify his staining. Sulfamic acid alone is going to be the best solution if we go the Jack’s route. Is there a more efficient...

pH Ceiling - Henry's Law of solubility of gas - Richard Falk chart of values

Thanks @onBalance that is very helpful information. I recently finished my third sulfamic acid treatment to remove scale from my original installation. There is still some more scale that needs to be removed and I was planning on doing a fourth treatment. Do you have any idea if regular...

pH Ceiling - Henry's Law of solubility of gas - Richard Falk chart of values

My buffering is fine, I have automatic commercial chlorine and acid feeders that keep my pH and chlorine pegged to my set point.

pH Ceiling - Henry's Law of solubility of gas - Richard Falk chart of values

    I don't need CYA so I don't use it.

But isn't the risk to plaster and equipment determined by the CSI? For aggregate pools the low end of the recommended CSI is -0.6.

pH Ceiling - Henry's Law of solubility of gas - Richard Falk chart of values

In 2021 Richard Falk @chem geek published a chart illustrating pH ceilings for different levels of alkalinity. A copy of the chart can be found here: CO2 and pH: Understanding Henry's Law Would there be any harm in targeting the following metrics to lower the pH ceiling and and reduce the...

Sulfamic acid pool scale treatment - chlorosulfamate - combined chlorine

Combined chlorine is gone so I am assuming the sulfamic acid has broken down. I have been periodically diluting my pool to keep the sulfate load low. So far I have added 30,000 gallons to my 26,000 gallon pool. Is there any way to calculate how much diluting I need to do to avoid calcium...

True minimum chlorine needed in residential pools.

I’m not saying this is the way I am going run my pool. In advance of a load I add liquid chlorine to achieve 3-5 ppm. And yes I did use Sulfamic acid to get rid of scale. Despite my CC issue my ORP is above 800 and my water looks great. I was looking to educate myself the water chemistry...

True minimum chlorine needed in residential pools.

I am curious to know what the minimum threshold is so I can determine the correct buffers for the situations specific to my pool. If the CDC requires 1ppm they are leaving room for some contingency. The above chart confirms my belief that CYA should only be used in situation where free...

True minimum chlorine needed in residential pools.

    - I understand the CDC recommends a minimum of 1ppm of free chlorine. - Alternative systems, such as mineral pools, claim you can get away with 0.5 ppm of free chlorine. What is the minimum amount of chlorine needed to maintain sanitized water? If my residential pool is not being used, I don't...

Breakpoint Chlorination - "Point of no return"

A number of State Health Department publications mention a "point of no return" when attempting to reach breakpoint chlorination. The Indiana State Department of Health published a guide that states: "To achieve the breakpoint, the free chlorine (FC) added to the water must be about ten times...

Sulfamic acid pool scale treatment - chlorosulfamate - combined chlorine

That’s a good question. Jack’s number two is for Copper and Scale so I guess it’s their protocol to use the agent in case there is a copper issue, which I don’t have. I’ll discontinue using it. I guess I don’t need to use the Fiber stuff for the filter anymore, correct?

Sulfamic acid pool scale treatment - chlorosulfamate - combined chlorine

Thanks, I have have started diluting. Jack’s is suggesting I use Magenta stuff going forward. Is that a good option or is there another sequestering agent I should use while I go through the process of periodic dilution?

Sulfamic acid pool scale treatment - chlorosulfamate - combined chlorine

To be exact the pool is 26,300 gallons and i have added a total of 34 lbs of sulfamic acid. It’s been 16 days since I added the initial 30 lbs of Jacks #2. 7 days into the treatment I added an additional 4 lbs of sulfamic acid (this time I used Suncoast Stop Stains - see below). There were...

Sulfamic acid pool scale treatment - chlorosulfamate - combined chlorine

@JamesW thank you for the next level research! This is consistent with my experience. I have been keeping my SWCG off because my CC levels have been above 6, but with this new information I will turn it back on. I have used the SWCG in hot tub mode and achieved an ORP above 650. No alge...

Sulfamic acid pool scale treatment - chlorosulfamate - combined chlorine

I understand that N-chlorosulfamates are not ideal but it sounds like they may be usable under certain conditions. We have a spillover hut tub that circulates with the pool pump. The hot tub may get some light use (1-2 people at time) over the next 2 months but it won't be hosting any major...

Sulfamic acid pool scale treatment - chlorosulfamate - combined chlorine

There is a risk to draining here. The water table is high and pools pop out of the ground all the time. I have a deadline under the pool so it’s doable but would like to avoid it.

Sulfamic acid pool scale treatment - chlorosulfamate - combined chlorine

Now that I know what an OCLT is I have this question. Wouldn't the sulfamic acid using the FC to form chlorosulfamate get in the way of OCLT proving I have organics? A loss of FC could just be the reaction with the sulfamic acid and not organics.
