    New here

Howdy! Welcome to the best dang pool website known to humankind. This place is really special. It helped take away the fear and uncertainty of being a new pool owner and gave me the knowledge to really put things on autopilot, all in about a season of ownership. Happy browsing, and happy...

Neighbor renting out their "Poolside Paradise." Renters keep coming to my house.

Sign up for Rover or one of the other dog walking apps. Whenever we go on vacation and can't take the dog with us we drop off the dog for summer camp at somebody's house. Make some bucks, spoil a pupper, then give it back to the owners.

Lots of suspended particles in the water

Have you tried getting your alkalinity down? My water cleared up significantly dropping below 100ppm TA, and then it went ultra clear down around 80 and below. I still get the same thing in front of my pool lights. I have really high TA fill water and I'm always fighting pH rise. pH rise...

    How to add expansion joint?

Ok. Thanks for helping me understand. For the time being the lid fits in the skimmer much better than it ever did since we have been here, so there's way less stress on it than before.

    How to add expansion joint?

It seems like the most natural looking location for that joint is where the concrete was already cut. We removed that part on account of when they poured the patio the first time the same thing happened: a crack formed. Would this be an acceptable location for that joint?

    How to add expansion joint?

That makes sense, thanks. My first thought was using a hammer drill in conjunction with something like that. I'm also seeing some smaller circular saw blades that are marketed for curved cuts. I'm reaching out to the concrete sub that the PB used for the install and a neighbor who does...

Thank you @mknauss! 50,000 posts helping others!

I don't know how he does it. Totally blown away by Marty's knowledge and dedication. A great milestone indeed. Three cheers for Marty!

    Funny, NOT Funny...close your gates!!!

Homey, if that's gonna happen in the deep end it's likely 2 bodies they're retrieving.

Also "Unbreakable" by M. Night Shamylan. Scary as heck just thinking about it.

    How to add expansion joint?

Gotcha. So does that mean the patio section that is poured there needs to be treated like a cantilevered coping section, where it doesn't have overpour that stresses the underlying skimmer masonry?

    How to add expansion joint?

I notice the original build didn't have this either. I suppose that explains the crack. I noticed when they removed that section of the patio the skimmer itself appears to be inside a solid concrete structure. I'm having trouble visualizing the proper fix you're describing. Would that be a...

    How to add expansion joint?

Ooh. That's a good idea, we may try to visualize that and execute. That's what I thought. I was also visualizing taking off the coping, then using some kind of grinder with a dust hood to cut down some on the dust. Rookie question: is there any way to make a curved cut in concrete? All the...

    How to add expansion joint?

Yes, there is rebar throughout the new pour, and they matched the existing control cuts, but I believe I'm going to ask them to return and cut them deeper, as some of them are quite shallow. Do you know the recommended depth?

    How to add expansion joint?

For a number of reasons we decided to pave over the planter bed on the back side of our pool. They finished the concrete last week and we've noticed they didn't install an expansion joint where the new concrete meets the coping stones. It was totally off my radar and I didn't ask them...

    ready to make the switch

This. My decision was easy, the Pentair IC60 was really the only choice for me because it's the right amount of oversize (60k capacity for 25k pool) and I already have Pentair electronics and app control. That for me was more important than warranty, because being the second owner none of...

pH rise, Creeping TA, rising CH, etc.

That's not really how it works chemically. Stirring up the water with bubbles, jets, swimming, waterfalls, etc just speeds up the process of calcium carbonate alkalinity swapping bonds with the hydrochloric acid you added. Chemically, the result is carbonic acid, which is the same thing as...

    ready to make the switch

It shouldn't be too difficult to make that business case. Remember the recommendation to greatly oversize the SWG for the volume of the pool, especially if you're seeing very high bather loads. This is all based on the assumption that your local regs will allow you to run CYA at the...

Cheap muriatic acid drip feeder... would this work?

Hey, Todd, welcome to the crew. I find myself in a nearly identical situation, and unfortunately I've not been able to find a cheap / safe / effective automated option, but I can report I'm still using that same old 20oz gatorade bottle and it hasn't disintegrated yet, after however many...

SWG seems to be working harder with less output

The FC / CYA tables (especially for SWG) are pretty low. It's easy to see a daily swing of 1.5 or more PPM FC with a SWG. Consider this: if chlorine is essentially 1.) free, 2.) automatic, 3.) safe to swim up to SLAM levels, and 4.) Only affects pH drop test above 10ppm, then: Why not...

Yehnahyeh, if you'll take a closer look, you'll notice the hornet carcasses laying around the ant bait I left in there after last year's ant invasion. Except I'm probably ignorant of the nature of Ozzy ants... 😜 The ants over here are easily handled and much preferred on account of they can't...

My dude, I live in Oklahoma on unincorporated county land with an extremely flimsy HOA covenant and the only real regulations or inspections for construction are at the state level for septic systems. 4th of July and New Years fireworks are usually a 5-10 day long ego-fest. Considerlation of...
