Did you know the White House has a pool? And it has 4 skimmers

At least I think I count four from the various angles it's been captured at. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House_swimming_pool

    DIY Swim Training Platform

This is a post for the benefit of any future DIYers considering this. If you have a pool without a good shallow or step area for teaching kids to swim, you might find yourself wanting a swim platform. I do, for my AGP, and I stalled for a year thinking this should be something easy to DIY. But...

Help me pick out a pool for this summer

I did a metal AGP with the cheapest possible components and I am happy with it. $1200 steel 18', $100 liner, $100-200 for base foam (I would use sand next time), $50 skimmer set, and I didn't cheap out on the equipment maybe $800 for a Hayward pump and filter combo. That was all 2020 prices...

Spring shopping for AGP's, what's on your list this year?

Yeah I've heard TFP's praise of robots even for AGP's since I got the pool. I guess I'm still interested to find out for myself.

Spring shopping for AGP's, what's on your list this year?

Luckily on that part, my pool gets pretty much zero leaf litter. Only dust and stuff that blows in on the wind. And yeah I'm still expecting to do a manual vac once a while, just hoping it won't have to be once a week anymore. We'll see.

Spring shopping for AGP's, what's on your list this year?

My expectations aren't very high so that sounds like a positive review to me. If I don't end up deciding it's not even worth the effort to put in the pool then I will consider it a success. Did you have a ladder or steps? I have an A-Frame type ladder and I'm not sure if I'm just doomed to have...

Spring shopping for AGP's, what's on your list this year?

I've got: Swimline 18' "20 gauge" (quotes because 20 gauge here just means as thin as they can get away with) liner - $106+tax. Just as cheap as 2020! I got on that one earlier this year. Intex 18' round bubble cover - $56+tax. Not bad. I like these oens in particular for how thin and light...

    Permanent plugs for main drains.

Is it 1.5" threaded and could take one of these? https://www.amazon.com/Pentair-27001-0022-2-Inch-Replacement-Sta-Rite/dp/B004VU9740/ Unfortunately, for a main drain I'd suspect it's more likely it's the liner clamp seal that is leaking. I'm doing my liner this year and thinking about...

    Rust around pump

There are not dissimilar metals there, that's a plastic base. And you can see the salt crust all over the pump!

    Rust around pump

It's salt rust, I have posted the same pump base left out in the weather without salt. I'm not blaming the pool for being salty, they have to be. I think it's weird to be evasive and blame this on "moisture".
  12. hwy17

    Rust around pump

That applies to the water in the pool. When it dribbles out of the pool slowly over long term and evaporates onto things the salinity reaches 100%, aka crusty salt. I can go get a picture of my flex hose bands next to demonstrate. And yes, I realize this effect occurs in both LC and saltwater...

    Rust around pump

Not that I think this rust is the end of the world, the degraded mount will probably still do it's job good enough until the pump itself dies if the leak is fixed. But anyway, for illustrative purposes, here is my Hayward powerflo that has been left out in the rain for 4 years, without saline...

Anyone have a dummies guide to AGP 😵‍💫

I think there's some argument to be made that it's a good idea to start with an Intex or other softside pool. For not a lot of money you can find out in a year or two whether you're going to enjoy taking care of the water or not. The problem is the equipment that comes with them can be...

Looking at first above ground pool, got some quotes on Buttress Free

One caveat with a buttress free oval pool is they cannot have a dugout bottom or "deep end", because of the straps that run under the floor. It's not a common option, but it's a thing.

    Rust around pump

I'm gonna go with slow leak from the inlet or outlet fitting on the pump has been dribbling pool water onto that motor mount for a long time. And even if it's not a saltwater pool, there's some salinity in it from regular chlorine breakdown.

    Is heating an AGP practical?

That would be rare to find in the US. That looks like maybe a repurposed residential water heater with vacuum tubes. In the US I would look at polypropylene panels, like the Fafco Solar Bear.

I need to make our new above ground pool into a saltwater pool. I need all the help I can get.

OP is talking about a soft side pool. For those of us with traditional permanently installed AGP's the plumbing and bonding is standard yes.

I need to make our new above ground pool into a saltwater pool. I need all the help I can get.

An aquatrol will require custom plumbing and technically a bonding system which is a complicated retrofit to a storable pool. I would get the Bestway salt system and understand that it will be barely adequate, may need longer runtime, and will likely only last 1 year. Unless you're going for a...

Above ground pool on artificial grass with slope

I used a 9x18 bestway pool like that, about 4" off on the water level, with pavers to hold up the low side. It lasted fine for me 2 years that way. Doesn't mean it's correct or wise, but that was my experience.

Hayward Power-Flo Matrix Pump (Model SP15921) Worked for 2 hours and Now just Hums when you turn on the Switch (Centrifugal Switch Stuck OPEN?)

The centrifugal switch is on the back, so minor disassembly of the rear cover may allow for inspection.

How sensitive do you think salt cells are to low ph?

No, and it stays covered all the time for heat too! We got one good warm spurt, but too cold to swim again now. Soon enough it will be able to stay warm enough uncovered from mid june to mid august.

How sensitive do you think salt cells are to low ph?

Crazy rainfall here over winter left me with a low 60-70 TA pool which is new for me, my fill water is 220 and I am used to running near that. It's also my first year with an SWG. My ph has been hanging out at around 7.0-7.2. I know that I can correct it with soda ash and I have some, and I...

Re sizing 30 foot round above ground pool

Bottom track, top track, cut and fold the edge of the wall. It's possible but that's a lot of effort and a lot of risk for very little gain I think. You can probably better address your chemical costs by getting more on top of the TFP method and keeping it dialed in.

    Which above ground pool advice

Just to say again, you have to watch out with every resin pool you look at. See the last image on this pool for and example of their tactics to bury "steel wall core" (read: it's a steel wall) in fine print...

    Which above ground pool advice

    Which above ground pool advice

Are you DIYing or getting installed? If getting installed you should talk to installers first. A lot of them really want to sell you the pool and can maybe come close to online pricing all in. I decided that it was cheaper to get the cheapest all steel pool on the market and replace it when it...

    Best, most inexpensive heater?

Cheapest real propane pool heater is a Raypack 106a for $1500 + complicated install. Cheapest practical heater is a Fafco Solar Bear + semi complicated install. The absolute cheapest way to get that pool warm immediately is 3 1500w immersion heaters off amazon and extension cords 3x 1500w...

    Esther Williams wall decay?

Water is heavy but a 4ft water column only exerts .14 psi at the bottom. That's only in the range of a couple hundred PSI of tension on the wall and that's why even rusted out pools don't usually tear the wall open. But that is the ultimate risk of course and should be considered.
