Full chip out required for pool renovation and resurfacing

The pool remodeler said that he could start chipping out the pool the end of this week. A specific timeframe for completion was not discussed. I will update this post when it is completed. As you know It has been really hot during the days lately so I suggested that his guys come early morning...

Full chip out required for pool renovation and resurfacing

Thanks for the reply Kim, I agree with you. I spoke with the pool remodeler today and he is going to chip out the entire pool, including removing the step tiles. At first he was reluctant stating that he felt it adequate to just chip out the 20 or so problem areas. I pointed out to him that the...

Full chip out required for pool renovation and resurfacing

Thanks Jim. My thoughts exactly. I was reading an article which basically explained the following. The pool plastering job generally has a warranty against delamination however this warranty applies to delamination from the original plaster. From what I understand however, if the original...

Full chip out required for pool renovation and resurfacing

TFP has been a great source for advise We are in the process of renovating and resurfacing our pool. The pool marble plaster is about 30 years old. The pool resurfacing company drained the pool, removed the old tile, pressure washed and acid etched the original pool surface and then applied...

Green bathtub ring around pool, CYA too low but TA too high

First step is to obtain an adequate CYA level. Next, If your TA is too high (alkaline), muriatic acid will lower it but it will also lower your pH (increased acidity). Baking soda will increase your pH back up but it also increases TA as well. Borates however will raise pH while raise in...

Green bathtub ring around pool, CYA too low but TA too high

Wireform is correct. Straight pool bleach should remove the green bathtub mark. If the whitish area is a calcium deposit muriatic acid will dissolve calcium deposits but important (do not mix muriatic acid with chlorine) use the bleach one day and muriatic acid the next. Use caution when...

Correct way to repair cracks at the level of the bond beam (cracked tile)?

Updated photos. At this point all cracked bond beams have been removed, rebuilt with 6000 psi concrete and rebar where appropriate. 3 of the 4 areas have had the deck re-poured fully isolated from the new bond beam by two layers of 30 lb roofing felt. The new deck pours were tied to the existing...

Correct way to repair cracks at the level of the bond beam (cracked tile)?

Thank you for your input Miner Jason. I agree with you. I would have preferred a longer set time however I needed a relatively short set time as I needed to create a slope. Reason - This pool utilizes a cantilever tapered bond beam where the bond beam slopes down towards the outside edge of the...

Correct way to repair cracks at the level of the bond beam (cracked tile)?

By the way, I like your pool, it looks great in the pictures !!! My kids would love a 35,000 gallon pool. Ours is a third that size. They could each be in one end and not argue over who gets what pool toys.

Correct way to repair cracks at the level of the bond beam (cracked tile)?

I just poured a new pool equipment pad with ten 80 lb bags of concrete mixed by hand and did that in 45 minutes. Five 55 lb bags should be manageable. Just make sure my forms are secure, level and true. Thanks again ajw22. I will post some pics when the pool is done. Sincerely, Darren

Correct way to repair cracks at the level of the bond beam (cracked tile)?

I agree. You have helped me to understand much better the mechanics of pool and deck isolation from each other and I appreciate your input very much. I think I am going to use the high strength structural mortar mix. It will be much easier to get a solid pour with no air spaces with mortar...

Correct way to repair cracks at the level of the bond beam (cracked tile)?

Thanks for the epoxy videos. Looks like I am good to go. Will hopefully pour the new beam tomorrow. The other side of the spa has a small 4 inch crack close to the back of the spa. I assume that they GC poured on top of the bond beam without isolating the deck from the bond beam. It would likely...

Correct way to repair cracks at the level of the bond beam (cracked tile)?

I was reading about this "Rapid Set high strength structural repair mortar" This stuff is incredible if it does what it says. "drive or build on in one hour", sets in 15 minutes, 6,500 psi, hydraulic cement formulation, durable in wet environments, 1/2 to 6 in. thick. superior resistance to...

Correct way to repair cracks at the level of the bond beam (cracked tile)?

I saw in one post they used "Rapid set high strength structural repair mortar" rather than high strength concrete. So the bond beam repair should use mortar rather than concrete?

Correct way to repair cracks at the level of the bond beam (cracked tile)?

Thanks, I am reading the post now. Trying to find what type of epoxy to use. I have used PC super epoxy and like it, just have not used it on pools.

Correct way to repair cracks at the level of the bond beam (cracked tile)?

I found when I removed the deck and bond beam that whoever built the pool decided to increase the height of the spa with a separate pour of concrete on top of the bond beam. They then set the deck on top of that with no expansion (slip joint) between the deck and the bond beam. Any movement of...
