Pool seems to just drink up bleach so fast

If you do install a SWCG and measure your current level of salt and find you need some more, I would suggest you NOT use the Clorox brand of pool salt. Several thread on here about the salt having high levels of iron.

Opening my pool and want to do it real nice this time

I don't post much around here, as there are plenty of experts to advise. I remember you were reluctant to drain some of the pool because that would be the final straw with your wife. After reading all of the effort you are going through to maintain this pool and the concern for your time away...

    CYA reading is wonky

Did the diluted test and got a reading of 40, so 80ppm. I did the non-diluted test and could just make out the dot at 80. It is hazy overcast now and not bright sun. I had my back to the sun and glancing at waist level this morning. I could have sworn I couldn't see the dot. I'll keep testing...

    CYA reading is wonky

I don't understand how I was getting readings of 60 and 70 for two months and now, over 100. Also I would have burnt off 15 to 20 ppm of CYA during that time. That's what I thought was happening when the reading would go back down to 60. I'll redo the diluted test according to mKnauss and see...

    CYA reading is wonky

I don't post much, but have been following the TFP method with great success for three years. Something happened today that I can't figure out. If you look at my logs, I have been adding CYA a few lbs at a time with the sock method since I open this year, working my way up to 70ppm. Two week...

    SWG cheaper than liquid chlorine?

I put in a RJ60 last year and haven't regretted it a bit. Maybe I am different, but I highly value my time spent going the Lowe's or Walmart trying to find liquid chlorine, hauling it out to the pool and putting it in every day. As others have said, I check the CL level two or three times a week...

In a battle with staining and algae

You didn't happen to use Clorox brand pool salt did you? When I installed my SWCG, I used the Clorox pool salt sold at Lowe's and it had a good amount of iron in it. I had some staining problems, but not as bad as yours. If you read some of the forum post, you will find it is common with Clorox...

Newbie With Questions On Initial Startup

You lower the pH because once you enter the SLAM, your FC will be over 10ppm and the PH Test doesn't give accurate results with the FC over 10ppm. By lowering the PH you have a room for the PH to rise some while the SLAM is going on so you are not likely to get into the 8s with PH.

First SLAM - When to start

Kelly, sounds like good advice. No, I had the SWG off during the test last night. When the kids leave I will boost it up for a few day and see if I can still pass the OCLT afterwards. Thanks for the help.

First SLAM - When to start

Just to add a wrinkle to this story, my wife has traditionally taken care of the pool, taking samples to the pool store every week and putting in what they say. She usually had algae once or twice a summer and would use algicide and whatever the pool store recommended. She use di-Chlor pucks and...

First SLAM - When to start

I was checking FC in the middle of the afternoon and the lowest reading was 4.5 then. I had the pump to cut off at 4:00pm and back on at midnight. I wonder if the FC was dropping below 4 during the afternoon and into the evening allowing the algae to get a foothold. I was also running a...

First SLAM - When to start

Over the past couple of weeks, I noticed that my FC level has been slowly dropping, although it never got below 4. Previously, with the settings on the pump run time and SWG% it was holding around 7 to 8 when I would test it around 3:00pm every day. My CYA had gotten down to 60 at one point, so...

    TF-100 Results and Cloudy Water

Yes, I was able to fix the leak by replacing the o-ring. By running water over the location where the air is being sucked in, water from the hose will be sucked in instead, and the noise the pump makes by sucking in air will cease. By moving the water to different location around the pump inlet...

    TF-100 Results and Cloudy Water

About the suction side air leak, I had bubbles coming out on my return also, a month or so ago. Standing by the pump, I could hear it cavatiting but couldn't figure out where the leak was. I took a water hose with a low flow and started going around the pump inlet housing and pump strainer and...

What is the process of adding salt to a 32 x16 Intex pool?

I'll add one thing. If you are putting the salt in yourself, don't use the Clorox brand of salt sold at the big box stores. I converted my pool over to salt a few weeks ago and had a time with iron in the water which we determined came from the Clorox salt. I don't know if the others are any...

    Need to Lower TA?

So don't worry about lowing the TA? I am in Alabama and I started running an aerator last week when the water got up to 90F. From what I have read, the aerator will raise the PH, so I wondering if keeping the PH at 7.6 will require a lot of MA. Should I just try and keep it below 7.8 with MA and...

    Need to Lower TA?

I just installed a SWG last week and ended up putting too much salt in. Had to do a partial drain and refill. My reading as of today are: FC 5.5 TA 90 PH 7.6 CH 190 CYA 60 Salt 3800 (from K-1766) Salt 3430 (from Clorox Strips) Temp 84F From reading the "Water Balance for SWGs" article it seems...

    Salt Water Stains

I just tried cleaning it with vitamin C crushed in a sock. I was amazed how easily it came off. No scrubbing required, just wipe it over and it is gone. Now to see how fast it comes back.....

    Salt Water Stains

First posting. We gave up on our local pools stores this year and I bought a test kit and took over the maintenance myself. By reading through this site and following the recommendation, I felt like I had things under control. So much so, that I decided to switch the pool over to salt water. I...
