How much water loss over winter is okay?

Inground 16x32, winter cover on from October to May (today) I drain my pool to a fairly specific spot each year I think. I'd say I was about 4 inches under that. Is that amount of water loss normal?

    Suction side leak

Hey everyone. I've been keeping track of some significant, off and on water loss this season. Kept thinking maybe it was just a day or two of big evaporation and ignoring the feeling that something was wrong. Anyways, little to no water is lost when pump is on. Water levels drop when pump is...

    Repurposing a hot tub pump

My expertise with pumps is kind of limited, so maybe this is a dumb question. I have a 5 bhp pump from an old hot tub. Could I book that up and use that for my sand point well?

    OCLT Pass criteria

Why is the OCLT pass criteria 1.0 FC loss or less? Isn't 1.0 a little high to lose in 8 hours overnight with no sunlight? Or is it because of the testing error range for the FAS-DPD test? Just wondering because I passed an OCLT last night going from 11.5 FC to 10.5FC, no CC present.

Hey, random question...... What does everyone do to keep their goggles from fogging up? Buy a special brand, apply a special coating? Any other tips?

    Mysterious pH drop?

Opened the pool a week and a half ago. pH was 7.6, TA was 140. The last couple of days my pH had been reading 7.2. No chemical addition yet this year besides liquid chlorine. What gives? Can leaves and debris affect pH? My neighbor has an annoying maple tree over my pool, it is dropping lots...

    Heater/control board damage

Okay, I've located the problem with my spa (see picture). It's a Calspa, 5100 series. Can you tell by the picture what I need to replace here? Just the contacts? Whole board? Heater too? And what would have caused this? Anything else I should look at so this doesn't happen again?

    Spa heating issues

Hey, I was hoping someone could help me troubleshoot my recent spa problems. I have a CalSpa, round, portable, 5100 model. Three things have happened.... 1. Something tripped the circuit breakers for my spa. Went outside after not looking at it for 3 days. The water was cold and breakers were...

First time closing: skimmer and main drain questions

First year closing. Feeling confident with everything, except my plan for the skimmer and main drain. I have a combo skimmer: the main drain is a second hole in the skimmer, and not plumbed to the pump. I am planning on using a Gizzmo, and my main drain hole is the only one that is threaded, so...

Bromine ban in Canada: should I stock up or accept it and switch?

Canada has made the decision to ban sodium bromide use in Canada, and all related Bromine products for pools and spas will be pulled from shelves as of Nov. 2020. So my question to everyone; is Bromine really that much better for use in spas that I should stock up on Bromine products to keep...

Found algae under main drain cover. Can I remove?

SLAMMED a month ago, but have had a couple small algae spots come up if I don't brush the pool for 4-5 days despite very adequate FC levels. They brush away easily, but obviously it meant I didn't get everything. Anyways, decided to investigate more closely under my main drain cover, and what...

Coping damage; do I need to worry about it?

At my two opposite corners, I have some coping seperation from my concrete deck. (Pictures attached below) I don't know a lot about pool construction and I've owned this pool for less than a year. It came like this. From what I've researched, it appears I have deck integrated coping (concrete...

    Debating on phosphate removal

I'm looking for some advice from someone who has gone through the process of removing phosphates from their pool. Let me start by saying I have read tonnes of threads on this topic on this forum. I fully understand that phosphate removal does not prevent algae. It's just removing a food...
