How to get CYA to dissolve?

Thanks all. I guess I'm just used to the Clorox that dissolves super quick and never takes hours and hours.

I did. should have added that. I was out there squeezing that stupid sock every 1/2 hour and it's still undissolved.

How to get CYA to dissolve?

I bought a 7lb bag of CYA at Ocean State Job Lot at the end of last season. It remained unopened in the garage over the winter (not exposed to excessive sunlight or humidity). This year, I used up the Clorox brand CYA I had left, about 1lb, and then opened the new bag. Per usual, I put 1lb in...

I have the antithesis of a trouble free pool. I'm at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

Apologies, I misread and thought you were continuously adding CYA. Fingers crossed for a successful and smooth SLAM!

I have the antithesis of a trouble free pool. I'm at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome. Sorry to hear about your pool troubles but there are thousands of people here (literally) who will help you. The first thing that jumped into my brain when mentioned inability to hold chlorine and previously high CYA was ammonia. Please read up Ammonia and see if this fits your...

What did you do to your pool today?

It was a busy weekend of trying to clear the pool after opening Friday. And drinking the pool water finally caught up to one of my idiot dogs so I was dealing with a sick dog on top of pool duties. But we've finally turned a corner - dog is feeling better and pool is looking much better. :) I...

Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! **RESURRECTED FOR 2025!**

We do have a mesh cover - came with the house and pool. It's still in excellent shape so no plans to replace it any time soon. I really am considering some water bags or sand bags this year on the edges of the cover around the concrete to keep the worms from crawling under. It's so disgusting.

Will this clear up with SLAM

Worse pools have been fixed with a SLAM. 35,000 is a big pool to drain to refill and personally, I would SLAM it but it's going to take a lot of LC.

Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! **RESURRECTED FOR 2025!**

Sigh. Pool is open and it looks like absolute garbage. I have to find a way next winter to keep the edges of the cover down better. So many worms still get under there (giant blob in the center) and this year a ton of other debris blew in.

    Question about using flocculant

I know others have said it but please for the love of peter pan do not use floc. Trust me - I've learned this the hard way and if there is one thing I can ever save someone from doing, it's using floc. Please, please, please follow all of the advice and recommendations you've received above and...

Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! **RESURRECTED FOR 2025!**

Hopefully Friday we can get ours open. I was planning for yesterday but I've been sidelined due to a minor shoulder injury that I don't want to aggravate. The hubs offered to do everything for me but I just can't. I like to fuss with it in my own way. I know the worms are going to be out of...

Order of Operations Opening for the Season

Before testing, did you let the pump run? I have to wait about 24 hours to test CYA and chlorine or else I don't get accurate results. Don't adjust anything until you are comfortable with your results.

Let’s see your water after removing winter cover!! **RESURRECTED FOR 2025!**

I can't even hang with you guys. I do not trust central PA to be out of the freeze for good so I've got a couple more weeks to wait. Probably after Easter. I almost don't even want to look at the amount of worms and associated worm dirt that are in there. For now, I will live vicariously...

    New to pools CYA reduction

Everything you need to do is listed above! I see you also have a inline chlorinator - not sure if you are using pucks or not but ditch those and stick to liquid chlorine once you get CYA under control.

    Rain/Heat "causing algae"

Facebook keeps suggesting this Above Ground swimming pool group for me to join and even though I don't have an above ground pool and don't join the group, I do enjoy reading the stupidity. I especially love the people who are swimming with their kids in these awful green pools because they are...

We Have a Winner! TFP Pool of the Month (July 2024); Theme - Pets

3 dogs here but they are not allowed in the pool - I'm afraid of their nails tearing the vinyl liner. This little brat is not supposed to be on the mesh cover and she knows it...

Pool will not clear 1 month later still cloudy

Hi and welcome! We do things differently here than pool stores. TFP basics rely on our own testing with a quality test kit, following the SLAM process, and regular addition of chlorine, either liquid or through a salt water generator. We don't follow pool store protocol of "shocking" only as...

CYA numbers very high - new to pools

If you haven't already done so, take the tablets out of the feeder and the floater thing and never use them again! No more tablets - liquid chlorine only.

    Overwhelmed

I'm in South Central PA too (north of York) and my equipment sits out all winter. It hasn't been an issue but it's one of those "it's fine until it's not" situations.

Just invest in the small pump. I lowered my water level using the pool pump before since we have a separately plumbed (is that a word?) main drain and while it was quicker, it was hard on the pump and it did lose prime. The sump pump I have is similar to what you showed and using a garden...

    Completely disgusted with alternative sanitizer

Yeah the pool stores are...special to say the least. I was in the same about about 4 years ago - bought a house with a pool, never having owned or maintained a pool. Once you get the hang of TFP, you won't step foot in a pool store again. Their free testing is never free, just a way to get you...

Great! I know it's like drinking from a fire hose right now but everyone here will get you there if you are willing to trust the process :-) Just keeping adding a gallon a day and let us know when your test kit comes.
