    Runaway pH

Hi Krulligo, yep, my borates are currently at about 45ppm. I used boric acid - perhaps I should bump that up a little bit to 50 or 55ppm.

    Runaway pH

Super helpful stuff, folks. My pH is pretty stable now at 7.6. My TA is settled around 35-40. Everything I read says keep it at at least 50. Should I be wringing my hands over this?

    Runaway pH

Hey everyone, this might be a common issue, but I'm struggling to use the TFP search and only get hot tub results. I've used this forum for years to help me with my pool, but I'm a new hot tub owner and have a struggle. When I go to bed, every night, I've worked throughout the day to get...

Chlorine Pucks in Skimmer = Disaster

Well, I believe you just explained to me what happened to the pool liner I had when I moved into this house. :)

Talk me off the ledge, or push me: filter edition

Jason, it took almost five days, but the pool is now super clear. Can you explain what the cloudiness was (there had been no bather load and during the entire 5 days I saw zero CC)? Just wondering how often I'll get this "cloudy" that takes days to clear. This forum has taught me to not be...

Talk me off the ledge, or push me: filter edition

carveitup, I've been thinking about doing that next time the trees start to "produce". Good to hear from you that it seems to work! Thanks.

Talk me off the ledge, or push me: filter edition

24 hours into my new sand filter, and the water is somewhat cloudy. I figured it was due to no circulation for three days, so I raised the FC above shock level. I did not lose any FC overnight, but pool has not cleared. It is blue, and I can see the bottom, but it is far from crystal clear...

I just replied to that thread with my pictures. Wow.

New pool owner with strange filter question.

A year and a day later, I wanted to add to this thread. You are not alone, reandjoe. Here is my "System 3": Definitely a System 2 shape, right? Here's the label!

Talk me off the ledge, or push me: filter edition

You know, that's funny Don... I was looking at a parts list for the System 3 and they didn't match what I have (locking ring, filter type, etc).... but the top of the unit definitely says System 3. I wonder if I have a top half of the filter enclosure that's different from the base. Nothing --...

Talk me off the ledge, or push me: filter edition

My options to do this over the weekend seem to be a Pentair SD80 or a Pentair Tagelus TA60. One place tells me I need the extra 2" of the SD80, another place tells me I need the resiliency of the TA60 because of the in-floor cleaning system (concerned the SD won't hold up very long since it's...

Talk me off the ledge, or push me: filter edition

Thanks Jason! While I don't want to drop several hundred dollars on this right now, I guess it is an investment that should pay off by reducing maintenance and time spent. Do you foresee any issues with the birch tree seeds and the sand? Will those wash right out with a backwash?

Talk me off the ledge, or push me: filter edition

My cartridge filter has been the bane of my pool maintenance since I bought my house, and tonight I'm so mad at it I'm about to throw it out of the family. First, specs: Pool: Inground 18x36x4.25 (average depth), although 3 feet of that length is a very narrow set of entry steps. I've always...

Ignorant of my own pool equipment - circulation issue

Thanks Dave, that makes sense. Would you or the other experts here consider just capping the system off and having a more "standard" pool circulation system?

Please? Anyone? Or should I just call someone out?

Ignorant of my own pool equipment - circulation issue

Thank you. Is there anything I should be looking for once inside the unit? All the gears seem to move freely, but I have no idea what else to look for.

Ignorant of my own pool equipment - circulation issue

I'm having circulation issues, and I suspect something in my pump equipment, but I'm not smart enough to even tell you what it is. First, the problem: I have eight wall returns and three in-floor cleaning jets, and typically the returns would fire two at a time, rotating around the pool, and...

Pump's gone out - best way to keep water clear?

This is the definition of "extenuating circumstances". My pump blew up last night, and I'm 4,000 miles away in England. It is very warm in Indianapolis and there must be a run on pool emergencies, because the soonest anyone can get out is Saturday to replace the pump. Obviously, I'd gladly go...

    Great Escape 12.5% bleach $2.50 a gallon

Just purchased the Menards 12.5% for $10/case. One gallon raised FC from 4 to 10 in my pool, which pool calculator says should be about 110 oz. worth. Pretty close for this type of precision.

Reason for never-ending algae: pool light?

Thanks Jason. I haven't been able to find "best practices" on here regarding light/niche maintenance. Should they be removed frequently to avoid this?

Reason for never-ending algae: pool light?

My water is clear, but I lose about 2.5-3ppm of FC overnight each night, and I'm adding more bleach than I (think I) should have to. I'm generally trying to hold at around FC6 (CYA45), but after a long hot day (it's been over 100 here recently), I can find myself down to 1.5 or 2. At that...

    What am I fighting?

Awesome info. Definitely didn't know that and believed the opposite. Thanks!

    What am I fighting?

Sure. Should have mentioned that. Two nights ago, I raised FC to 14 after the pool was out of the sun, and then the next morning (see results above) I was at 7.... but the CC was 0, which is what's confusing me. When I was battling the hardcore algae at open this year, my CC would be off the...

    What am I fighting?

If my FC gets eaten up during the day (maybe 7 in the morning and 0.5 by evening), but the pool has 0 or 0.5 CC in the evening... am I battling algae or the sun? I guess what I'm asking is, if it were algae, wouldn't I see higher CC? For instance, yesterday morning: FC: 7 CC: 0 TA: 200 pH...

    nitpicky fas-dpd test question

I use two scoops as well; I don't remember who said it but I read on here last summer that too little powder is a problem, but too much is not. So I go for a touch more rather than a touch less.

The cure for milky water is....?

Holy cow... I passed the overnight loss test. Currently: FC: 6 CC: .5 TA: 250 pH: 7.3 CYA: 25 Water feels awesome. I need to find a way to aerate that doesn't involve humans (so unreliable). Could I just hook up my cover pump on a step, sans hose, and let it blow billions of bubbles...

    Cartridge cleaning question

I would suggest a soak. How are you cleaning th filter? Garden hose and nozzle? Are you letting it dry before using it again? Do you have two that you rotate?

[attachment=0:pew3vd1g]photo (2).JPG[/attachment:pew3vd1g]This morning: FC: 15 CC: .5 TA: 250 pH: 7.2 CYA: 10-20 And as you can see from the picture, I am clear for the first time in 2012. Thanks for your help! Next steps? I'm assuming: 1. Wait another few days to see if more of the...
