Spalling after draining / refilling pool. Cosmetic or something worse?

@onBalance thanks for that link! I found your original post on this forum. The one question I had that isn’t answered in the article or anywhere I’ve searched - when does spalling become a problem where you’ll absolutely need to refinish your pool? Is it just if/when gunite is exposed or...

Spalling after draining / refilling pool. Cosmetic or something worse?

AJW, Thanks for your reply. It’s maybe a 1/8 inch top layer of plaster that was lost in those areas exposing a white rougher plaster below. No exposed gunite as far as I can tell. The areas with spalling are definitely growing in size after I brush or the pool vac goes over it. I do...

Spalling after draining / refilling pool. Cosmetic or something worse?

I recently had to drain and refill this pool to have it repiped. I’m now getting spalling in the shallow end near the steps. I’ve done a bucket test and I’m not losing any water. I was hoping to rehab this pool in stages doing the pipe work now and the replaster in a few years. I’ve...

    1. Suction side air leak. 2. High CH, low pH, low TA, added baking soda but can't get rid of precipitate.

This is what the pool looked like before adding the baking soda two weeks ago.

Hi James, the pool is not painted as far as I know. It should be just white plaster. The only thing blue is the tiles at the water line. I get a fine blue precipitate on the floor, walls, and steps but it leaves no residue on my hands. Now cleaning the DE filter - that was a different...

If this is copper precipitation will the no drain water exchange still work? Or do I have to do a drain and refill to ensure I eliminate all the copper?

Cleaning out my filter while waiting for pump to arrive. The pool sediment is blue and my filter is blue. What’s causing this?

Yes…. I’ll be sure to post those delta T calculations here before starting! 1. About not disturbing the water - is it best to have the pool pump off for a few hours before starting the exchange to allow the heavier salts to settle at the bottom of the pool? 2. As far as vacuuming…. My pool...

The precipitation has gotten worse to the point I’ll have to do a full drain and refill or a no drain water exchange before being able to do a leak inspection and I can't RO filter the pool in this state. What a mess! I’d prefer doing the full drain and refill as there are a lot of calcium...

For the no drain exchange, can I use my Taylor kit to get a value for TDS or do I take samples of pool water and fill water to a pool store?

Thanks for the reply. I showed them a picture from today, hoping that it clears up more in a week. He was actually ok diving it in its current state with 4 foot visibility. The valves to both my main drain and skimmer have seized, so he said he would have to access / plug the main drain from...

I was recently asked to look at a pool the forum helped me stabilize years ago. 1. The initial problem of why I was contacted was that there was a suction side air leak whenever the automatic pool vacuum (Barracuda MX-8) was connected to the skimmer. I changed the hoses and still got a leak...

    First test with Taylor K2006C

I’ve got 2 reagents on order to test salt then! I’ll definitely look into the SWG. When FC is above 10, the standard response here is that pH isn’t accurate. Can someone tell me if the high chlorine shifts pH towards being more basic or acidic? I would guess acidic. I only ask because my...

    First test with Taylor K2006C

That would be ideal! But my last pool guy said that due to the old copper piping in my pool it wouldn't be a good idea. Something about the salt water corroding the old copper pipes. Any truth to that statement? As far as manual vacuuming during the fall, would you recommend I get a leaf...

    First test with Taylor K2006C

Updates, observations, and new questions as I approach my 2 month anniversary with TFP! Thanks to everyone that helped me out in those first weeks. FC 9.5 CC 0 Ph 7.4 TA 75 CH 700 CYA 80-90 1. My subsequent CC readings were between 0.5 and 0 so I decided not to SLAM. Pool has remained...
