One year old pool, One year Member, Zero Algae!!!!

Got the Google Photos "1 year ago today" photo yesterday...opened it up and it was a picture of my wife and daughter in our new pool. How time flies! Just wanted to give a shout out to this website and all the great advice I've received since joining. Had a pool built last year and one...

    Confused...plaster dust? Calcium? Something Else?

I do not have autofill...just a manual water valve to open an water fills through a pvc pipe into one of my skimmers. I am the level control mechanism :)

Thanks for the advice....I'll give it a try...my fill water has pH of 7.6 and TA of 70

    Confused...plaster dust? Calcium? Something Else?

Ok if I leave my TA at 50, and add acid to lower from 8 to 7.6, will my TA keep dropping? How low can it go?

    Confused...plaster dust? Calcium? Something Else?

Its hard to say...I use the Taylor 2006 test kit...the device I test the pH has the highest reading at 8.2 i think...but 8 to 8.2 color is so close it's hard to tell which one it is ....to me it looks like its the highest reading on the scale...that's if I don't add acid. I actually tested my...

    Confused...plaster dust? Calcium? Something Else?

Hi ajw22 Yep, as I admitted in my post, I've really been slacking on my plaster brushing...would the dead algae be white in color as I brush my plaster? There was no color of yellow or green anywhere on my plaster or in the water after brushing. Water was just whitish cloudy....Luckily, I've...

    Confused...plaster dust? Calcium? Something Else?

Hello MK...I do not know why my ph is always rising so fast....If I'm trying to keep it under 8ph all the time, I'd have to add acid every 3 to 4 days. I've been adding baking soda to raise my TA back up every time it hits 50 to 60. I have fountains and bubblers but never run them due to...

    Confused...plaster dust? Calcium? Something Else?

Was swimming with my daughter on Monday and she said, "Dad, the plaster feels so smooth...kind of slippery" This immediately got my attention...she likes to help me inspect our plaster while swimming. She was referring to the plaster on one of the pool walls. I went over and felt it and it...

Summer mode = trichlor tabs, Winter mode = liquid chlorine

Probably right MK....I'll find out soon enough...just trying to be more efficient with my time this year...it's going to be an ongoing experiment.

Summer mode = trichlor tabs, Winter mode = liquid chlorine

So I've been a member of this great site for almost a year now. I've decided that I'll be running my pool in two different modes...summer mode and winter mode. I had this idea this winter when I was pumping out 6 inches of water every few months to get my CYA down around 30 to start the new pool...

TDS Total Dissolved Solids - Trip to pool store

Hi James, I do have the pool math app and track the CSI inputing all my test results....never thought of testing for salt since my pool is not a saltwater pool. Love this site...pool built last summer and no algae yet :) I've totally nerded out on the water chemisty....couldn't live without my...

TDS Total Dissolved Solids - Trip to pool store

Hi all, So I went to the pool store today to get some muratic acid. Took my water in for them to sample so I could get $5 off my acid purchase. Surprisingly, their results were very close to mine. They gave me spill on "you have high phosphates and need something to lower that"...I just said...

How high can Ph rise if it just left to rise with not adding acid?

Hey there Texas Splash! I suspect his water has to be close to 9 with that color I saw...was shocking to see. Yes my pool maint vacation is almost over too! Live south of Houston in League City. Going to put out my weed n feed for the yard tomorrow and maybe take a stab at cleaning my...

How high can Ph rise if it just left to rise with not adding acid?

My good friend lives around the corner and we had our pools built last year by same builder at the same time. I found this great site and do all the testing/water chemistry on my pool. He has a "pool guy". Out of curiosity, he brought over his water for me to test yesterday. I use the...

High chlorine level in winter cause damage to pool?

My friend around the block had his pool built at same time as I did this past summer in June. He has a "pool guy" coming every two weeks. I've tried to convince him on how easy it is to do yourself with just a little knowledge and proper testing kit...but....no go He told me he contacted his...

    TriChlor

I got my new pool going in June. Didn't know anything about water chemistry. Pool builder did provide me with CYA and I added the amount he suggested and it put my CYA at 40....now I know that was a great number ...however, I kept using the triclor tabs...first 30 days pool pump ran 24...

Please use eye protection (goggles) when adding Muratic Acid

Agreed...admittingly it was my mistake for not taking notice of the wind direction....which I stated I normally do...by staying upwind of the bottle. I agree with the replies about how people take care in handling the acid...as I do as well. We just can't assume that the wind is always...

Please use eye protection (goggles) when adding Muratic Acid

Kind of surprised by the responses guys. First the skin irritation was not long term...it was immediate and then as soon as I put water on my forearms it went away. That was without a doubt a direct effect from the MA vapors. The very first question the doctor asked me after examining my eye...

    CSI and colder water temp

Cold front came through and wanted to test my water out of curiosity. What I found was my CSI was (-0.42)...much closer to the lower limit recommendation of (-0.6) than my water has ever been. My results are: FC 8 CC 0 PH 7.6 TA 60 CYA 60 CH 250 WATER TEMP 72F I've been letting my TA drift a...

Please use eye protection (goggles) when adding Muratic Acid

Wanted to post this as a safety flash for all that have to add Muratic Acid. Recently, I had some eye irritation in my right eye...under my eyelid...was painful to close my eye lid which made sleeping very difficult. After 2 weeks, couldn't take it anymore and went to eye Dr. She said there...

Bleach seems to be costing me 2x as much as tablets?

Joyful, Thanks for the chemistry lesson...so I've not had high TA since switching to Liq Chl months ago...it's been 80...I wouldn't think that is high TA...however, my pool is new plaster since mid June....I've heard new plaster pools generally have higher Ph...not sure if that is true but I...

Bleach seems to be costing me 2x as much as tablets?

Ok found the MSDS for the liq chl at Home Depot...Brand its HDX...msds shows the Ph is 12.5...look under section 9 "Physical and Chemical Properties" so I'm not sure why many here say liq chlorine is Ph neutral...to me neutral would be 7 ...unless I'm missing something. MSDS link is below MSDS...

Bleach seems to be costing me 2x as much as tablets?

Sooo I've been having this thought myself too. Our pool was finished in mid June. I started out using trichlor pucks but switched to liquid chlorine. Since switching, I've noticed, as you have, my ph is always going high...I'm at work but will try to find the msds but I did one time and it...
