Converting from bromine to chlorine pucks - any advice?

To have a true Chlorine pool in a short period of time maybe, but as the addition of Chlorine just reactivates the bromine already in there, changing water mid season might not be best solution.

So very wrong, I don't even know how to respond

CG, I do get 21% Chlorine delivered in carboys but if I get low, other sources in the UK are harder than in the US. Tesco do sell jugs of natural bleach but last time I tried they had two on the shelf! It just seems to me that there are more scary press and web articles in Europe about the...

So very wrong, I don't even know how to respond

It is an interesting perspective and one that has a growing weight of adoption here in Europe largely following the German DIN standard (the European Union loves legislating against things that dont need it). Perhaps some of that is now spreading across the pond. When I come to the US I am...

Converting from bromine to chlorine pucks - any advice?

No offense taken. There are always slight language iterpretation issues on any web forum like this. The plan in your last post is exactly what I did, just be careful to get the unscented bleach from the supermarche. In fact you may not need to throw away all of your water if you just use the...

Converting from bromine to chlorine pucks - any advice?

I went from Bromine to Chlorine and was told not to mix the pucks in the feeder. What I did was manually dose with bleach (which will re-energise the bromine anyway for now) until the feeder was completely empty. I then flushed it through several times before filling with chlorine. You could...

Final Heat Pump vs Natural Gas Scenario

I have a Coverstar underguide automatic safety cover and a 22KW Calorex Heat Pump with reverse cycle defrost (necessary if air ambient temps fall below 10C, whch they regularly do in the UK). Calorex are a UK manufacturer so may not be available in the US. We swam a couple of times last year...

Final Heat Pump vs Natural Gas Scenario

We run our pool very successfully in the UK from end April/early May to end of September with a heat pump. We run it at a pretty constant 82F (28C). As others have said a cover is a must to minimise overnight heat losses but I have to say it is very successful overall. I leave it running...

I don't want to be under construction but...

Whats the inside diameter of it. You might be able to find an offcut of ~8 or 10" drainage pipe that you can use to line the skimmer pot. Bit of epoxy on the outside to make up tha gap. Worth a try against the cost of cutting it out.

    Holiday problem...

You have just highlighted the reason many of us take a test kit on holiday, even if only a few test strips. I like to at least know there is some chlorine in the water and the ph is there or there about before I dip a toe in the water.

    Tuna on the grill

Marinade overnight in Dark Rum, couple of drops of Vanilla Extract and Brown Sugar in a ziplock. BBQ on a lowish heat or the sugar will burn. Works nice on Prawns (Shrimp) too.

    clueless beginners questions.

UK is a very different pool market, probably as pools are that much rarer. Most of what you guys in the US talk about just does not exist over here. Just a matter of adjusting the theory of BBB to the practicals of the market. Doron - I started with a small above ground intex pool. I found that...

    clueless beginners questions.

Palintest do a comparator set that includes CYA http://www.palintest.com/products-details.aspx?id=26 and they are based in the UK. Not as good as the drop based kits but a huge improvment on the test strips. FC test only goes up to 5ppm but you can buy a set of fairly accurate digitial scales...

    I NEVER have 0 CC...

Very normal in a covered pool. If I leave my pool cover on for any extended period of time the CC can rise quite a bit, which I used to shock for. A sunny morning (rare in the UK) normally brings it back down again without shocking. Just part of the getting to know your own pool process.

What effect does having a cover have?

You will find that in the UK a cover helps a lot. Our weather tends to be breezy with low humidity and cool nights and widely varying daytime temperatures. If left uncovered my pool looses about 6 degrees c overnight with a nightime temperature of ~ 12 deg c if I dont add any heat. With the...

    UK Bleach

You wont find consumer bleach stronger than 5% in the UK as bleach with more than 5% falls under the CHIP (Chemical Hazard Information and Packaging) regulations and would need to have all the safety information on the label. That label would be bigger than most 2L bottles! Quite funny really to...

In line chlorinator and cya level

Mine is a peristaltic pump. Has worked flawlessly for 18 months other than changing out the length of pipe in the pump which tends to harden. My system also pumps acid so once the setpoint is sorted it keeps CL and PH.

Raypak Millivolt 206 for 27' above ground pool?

Have you considered a heat pump? I have the 22kw one of these http://www.calorex.com/pool-heating/domestic-swimming-pool-heat-pumps.htm in the UK and am very pleased. Provided daytime temps are above 10 deg c it heats the pool from cold (50f) to usable (80f) in about a week. During the summer it...

    CYA Too highj?

Be prepared to do a lot of draining and refilling to get that CYA down to below 50. Took me two weeks of taking 4" off the pool every night and refilling to get from ~130 down to 40. My lawn looks great though :-)

In line chlorinator and cya level

A weekly backwash and vacuuming to waste on a regular basis just about keeps the Trichlor added CYA in check (at least it did for me over a 2 year period). Changing to a robot cleaner meant less backwashing and no more vacuuming to waste and CYA quickly climbed to over 100. At that level it is...

How long to get to swimming temp?

In the UK we are lucky to get mid 70's daytime and low to mid 50's nightime and even with a big commercial heatpump it takes a week or so to get up to 78. Covered the whole time in the initial heat up.

    Chlorine testing

A CC of 0 or 0.1 is good. FC of 3.5 might be OK as long as you don't have too much stabiliser is the water. How high a PH is high?

    Hi from UK

A quick intro and thanks. I have had a 32' x 15" trough shaped heated IG pool for 7 years. Initially ran it on Bromine and gas but a rapid increase in cost of both led me to do a major overhaul last year. Now heat is supplied by a heat pump and I have gone over to liquid chlorine fed by a...
