Pop up cleaner: what does this black dealie do ?

A related question... If the pop-up cycle is finished and you turn the knob down (to pause -- if that's what down means), does this effectively disable the pop-up system ?

Pop up cleaner: what does this black dealie do ?

Thx for the info ! While searching the web yesterday I saw this knob refered to as a "speed control". And I thought "speed of WHAT... water thru the popup? Speed of the pop-up cycle ? Speed of light ? What ?". Apparently speed of cycle is close. I guess pointing up means quickest cycle (?)...

If I were to push down, it appears as though there is only 2 inch of travel available. The whole thing seems fragile so I hesitate to push...

    Help ID this backwash valve

I just bought a house and this is the back wash valve on the pool. It looks like a simple rotate to unlock / pull up /rotate to lock/ backwash / etc. valve. But I'm not sure. It has no markings of any kind. No "Lock" "Unlock" positions... no manufacturer info... nothing. Can someone tell me...
