I agree, but I've spent many months trying to find this leak. My pump doesn't have drain plugs and I've tried the hose method to test the plumbing. No water leaks anywhere either. I'm now not sure if a check valve (on the suction line) can help the pump keep prime.

Re: losing water I don't think using a plate would be a good idea. You want to make a seal, e.g., fitting a plug inside the pipe.
