    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thanks! I definitely need to be more vigilant when it comes to monitoring my chlorine levels. Is it common to add liquid chlorine to a salt water pool if you see the chlorine levels start to drop below the recommended levels?

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

After the SLAM in May, I was checking the chlorine pretty much every day. As it appeared the levels were holding stable, the testing may have dropped to more like every other day. This past week, I failed and did not check. There were several reasons, but ultimately, a week went by. I was...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

I was afraid you were going to say that. I have to go to the pool store to get some chlorine. I will look into the options available for replacing my mechanical timer. With your experience, do you have an average life expectancy for SWCG? I looked at the label on my control unit and it says...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thanks for the information. Since the last SLAM, I have been able to maintain the FC at or around 15 with the SWCG running 12 hours a day at 80%. As I monitor the FC levels, I might adjust the time just slightly or increase the to 100%. But I have found that sweet spot at 12 hours and 80%. I...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thanks so much for the reply. Yes, mknauss has been very help throughout this whole process. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of the issue. To answer your question, the SWCG is currently set to run from 6am to 6pm at 80%. Therefore, it is generating chlorine 80% of the time during that...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

I will do some further investigation on why this message is triggering. The filter pressure is currently about 10 psi, which is only a little above the clean level. I'm not sure what the SWCG flow switch is. The flow light on the SWCG control panel is not illuminated. Therefore, it appears...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thanks for the quick reply. Hopefully you are right about the CYA. Maybe it just got away from me...again The problem that I have is that it feels like I am constantly adding stabilizer to the pool. I have been trying to monitor the CYA levels weekly. 5/21 - 65 (added 10 oz stabilizer)...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Update...the chlorine has crashed, yet again. And the wife is interviewing pool companies as we speak. Like my initial post, sorry it is so long. I'm just trying to provide all the relevant information I can think of. So just to bring everyone up to date, I completed the last SLAM (the one...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Just a quick update and question. It has been a little over a week since I completed the SLAM and the Mustard Algae Shock. The free chlorine levels have come down and I have been holding them around 15 ppm. With my current CYA level of 70, I'm trying to stay above 17.5% or 12.25 ppm. The...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

I may have answered my own question. Is the bump from 15% to 17.5% for the reserve FC in this reference? "A minimum FC level is needed as a "reserve" for usage so in practice at least 2 ppm FC is required even at low CYA levels. The table above shows the amount needed for disinfecting chlorine...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Sorry, one more question. I forgot to ask where the target FC level of 17.5% of my CYA came from? Thanks again!

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thank you so much! I've only seen the FC/CYA levels presented in the simplified and standardized versions, I've never seen the levels presented in this chart: Chlorine CYA Chart So based on this chart and my CYA levels of 75 to 80, my Mustard Algae shock level is 46 (60% of 80) and my Mustard...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

I read this article. Mustard Algae Is this the one you were referring to? Let me know if you have additional articles that would be useful. Also, what were you referring to when you mentioned "elevated maintenance level"? Were you referring to the elevated levels, FC around 11, I was...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

So as of early this morning, I passed the OCLT overnight and therefore, the SLAM is complete. The water is crystal clear, the CC is 0 and the OCLT was 0.4. Actually, I tested it twice this morning. The first test the OCLT was 0.0 and the second was 0.4. That all being said, I added chlorine...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thanks so much for your reply. In my initial post, in this thread, I obviously presented a lot of data. But that being said, I left a lot out. I did not provide all the data for the multiple readings and chlorine additions I did daily during the SLAM. But yes, during the SLAM, I tried to...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thanks so much for the reply! I have thought about the SWCG as a potential issue. But here's my rationalization why it is not. Let me know your thoughts. I have been holding the chlorine levels much higher than suggested (TFP suggested min 4 and target 6). Most recently, I have been holding...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thanks for the reply. I’ve thought about that. But if there was some mustard algae or some other stubborn algae remaining after a SLAM, wouldn’t that cause the OCLT to fail?

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

So just an update... I took the pool light out and as we expected there was no sign of any organics or algae. That being said, I cleaned out the enclosure again and left the light on the pool deck. I removed the cover from the main drain and even though there was not a lot of evidence of...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

That’s what I thought and why I have never added chlorine to the skimmer in the past. Any tips or tricks on how to work in the deep end to remove the drain cover without scuba equipment? I can hold my breathe but I tend to float up to fast. Unfortunately, I do not have a scuba weight belt.

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thanks for the reply! I’ve thought about that and I try and keep an eye on the control unit to make sure it is on and the generator to make sure it is generating bubbles. I keep an eye on scaling and have cleaned the unit a couple of times the past few years to remove buildup. I have also...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I did remove the pool light during the last SLAM. It was prior to your suggestion, so it was probably only out of the enclosure for a couple of hours. I am planning on removing it again today and checking/cleaning the enclosure again. Just to make sure, I will...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

PLEASE HELP!!! My chlorine has crashed again. I am literally at my wits end. I feel like I know what I'm doing, but no matter how hard I try, I can not keep my chlorine from crashing. SLAMing my pool every 2 to 3 weeks during pool season is obviously not realistic. There has to be an...

    Help!!! Cloudy with Dropping Chlorine

Thanks so much for the reply and information. I did remove the light, this time, and cleaned out the housing. For full disclosure, when I brushed out the housing, quite a bit of white particulates came out in a milky cloud. I'm assuming this was algae. So I had pretty much decided, I need to...
