Can muriatic acid go bad AKA My muriatic acid seems to be doing absolute squat

My tap TA is about 175. When I refilled last year I managed to get this down to 125. Since it has been hot I've been filling from the tap more often. It just seems like it spiked very quickly from 125 when I tested a month ago. Is MA preferred to dry acid? It's only like $6 for two gallons...

Can muriatic acid go bad AKA My muriatic acid seems to be doing absolute squat

Hi, I'm about a year into pool ownership and I figured I had it fairly down. However in the past week or so my pH has been causing me a lot of trouble. I just can't keep it lower than the upper 7s. Latest readings as of this evening: Cl - 4ppm pH - 7.7-7.8 TA - 200 (I'll get to this in a...

Leaving for 12 days without pool care. How to keep from going green

Thanks for all your advice! Just having someone drop a tablet in every few days gives me peace of mind that maybe I won't come back to a swamp. :)

Leaving for 12 days without pool care. How to keep from going green

My concern is that it's supposed to be hot when I leave although I'm not sure how long it will stay that way. In SoCal the sun is always strong so I'm hoping that it does help a bit despite the heat.

Leaving for 12 days without pool care. How to keep from going green

Thanks for all the input. I think in reality my CYA is probably below 50 but I've had a hard time testing it and seeing anything greater than maybe a 35. I wonder if I simply haven't been giving it enough time to register. I mostly have the pucks for just this sort of occasion but it was never...

Leaving for 12 days without pool care. How to keep from going green

I'm still rather unsure about my CYA levels. I refilled my pool from fresh about 2 weeks ago and added some clorox stabilizer initially. I took a reading about 9 days later and its around 35-ish. I added about 10oz more via a sock (probably about 3lb total in all) yesterday and I was going to...

Leaving for 12 days without pool care. How to keep from going green

Hello all, I finally have my pool in good shape after two months rife with issues. However I'm going out of town for 12 days and I don't have anyone to handle pool care. I've done some reading on this site and several mentions of shocking it, covering it and keeping the filter on a timer. I...

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

Thanks again for all your help. Last night I showed no significant drop in Cl. It's been about two weeks now and I only see about (maybe) 35 cya. I dropped another 10oz of Clorox brand stabilizer into a sock. I hope I'm not being impatient only to find out next month I have a cya of 100. Does...

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

This morning I tested again. Looks like the first time it hasn't dropped more than 1ppm overnight. It was a bit hard to judge but my loss was somewhere between .5 and 1ppm. I think that I've gotten over the algae. I'll do another overnight test to be sure.

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

Okay, thanks. I'll test my CYA again tonight. I have some hth test strips that I could stand to get rid of, I'd rather waste them and be somewhat in the ballpark than waste my cya reagent.

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

I swung home for an afternoon check in. The Cl levels dropped off from about 15.5-16 this morning to about 11 just now. Water looks clear and there's no visible sign of algae. I'm guessing they're either still consuming Cl and haven't been fully eradicated or my CYA levels are still low (I...

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

Took the ladder out. There were no immediate signs outside of the cloudy plumes that shot out while removing it from the pool. I shocked last night and got it up to 17ppm (I overshot a tad for my CYA level). This morning it was still down about 1-1.5 ppm. I imagine the latent algae that exited...

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

I dropped in about an hour ago to see if I could remove the ladder myself. While I was unable to I can confirm that there were cloudy plumes emanating from it and some green, slimy stuff coming out of the cracks. Good call on the algae-ridden ladder. So much for my nice, clean water. Looks like...

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

I'll pull the ladder out tonight and try to get the chlorine to shock levels again and hope that I don't have much of a drop in the morning. I'll report back then... Thanks!

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

How would I go about cleaning it if the parts are hollow but permeable? i.e. they can let water in but there's no real way to clean them? Just flood them with clorox somehow?

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

Wouldn't shocking the pool kill the algae inside it? I'm pretty sure it's weighted with sand. There was some sand around it when I turned it over to clean it. I gave it a pretty darn good scrub. I'm honestly not sure how much i can disassemble. The posts and steps might be hollow but there's...

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

I'd guess its hollow. It's a pretty serious ladder so it'd be ridiculously heavy if it were solid.

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

I scrubbed everything down but the filter innards. I gave the ladder a good scrub but can't guarantee I got it all. That and I let the water go unsanitized from Sunday till last night. I think my goal before I raise the Cl again tonight is to get the CYA level in check and aim for 40. Then I'll...

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

I shocked last night. I tried to bring it up to 10ppm but I got to about 8ppm (I tested about 90 minutes post-shock). These were my numbers at around 9:30pm: FC: 8ppm CC: .05 or .00 ppm (hard to judge) pH: ~7.2-7.3 CYA: <30 I tested again this morning before the sun hit the pool and my FC was...

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

Currently circulating my initial dose of stabilizer this morning. I had to wait off on the shock since I had to get my pH under control. It's now hovering in the 7.2-7.3 range and I'll be throwing in a gallon of Cl tonight. Since the bottle says what most pool chems say (wait two hours before...

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

Will do. I'll shock tonight. Is a pH of 7.8 too high for the Cl to be effective? Also when is the best time to add the stabilizer? Thanks.

Just refilled pool - should I do a non-clorine shock first or just clorine shock?

Hi, I'm a new pool owner (inherited from the house we bought) and we came to realize that the water probably hadn't been changed since it was installed 5 years ago. After getting a proper test kit I realized that my CH and CYA were off the charts. My CH was about 400ppm and CYA was also...

new pressure gauge only displays zero psi

I think that was more of a worst-case scenario number (1.1 bar) back when I had an algae event and was cleaning the filter every day. Ever since then I'd be cleaning it when it started hovering around .9 bar (or the return flow started to get noticeably weaker). I'll be returning the gauge and...

new pressure gauge only displays zero psi

Hello All, I'm a fairly new pool owner and I tried replacing my old pump pressure gauge (hard to read; only displays in bars) with a new one from Lowes (goes from 0-60psi). It's not exactly rocket science to install - I screwed it in without over-tightening and turned everything back on like I...

pool filter starts strong then flow tapers off over time

Hello again, So changing the filter has definitely helped my water flow. It's nearly as strong as if I didn't have a filter in at all. I've been regularly shocking the pool in the evening with the filter running constantly. 1-2lbs per evening depending. The trouble is that the chlorine level...

pool filter starts strong then flow tapers off over time

The filter psi never seems to waver from around 15-17 PSI. If it were clogged wouldn't the PSI be higher? When I first started clearing the algae the filter would be green. Lately it's pretty clear but I'm sure there is buildup. I wasn't really cleaning up after the algae kill-off. I certainly...

pool filter starts strong then flow tapers off over time

I was going to head over there this afternoon to see how the flow is. I'll take some photos. Things I do know: The pool is above ground, roughly 7200gal. No Heater. Pump is 'Splapool' model 72729 Filter is a Pooline Cartidge filter. I want to say it's model 11511 or 11512 (It's not well listed...

pool filter starts strong then flow tapers off over time

Hello! So my wife and I just bought a home with a pool and I know next to nothing about how to maintain them but I know enough about them to know there's something off with the filter flow. I've shock the pool last night since there was absolutely no chlorine and when I checked this morning it...
