    Flakes/Scale Buildup in Heat Exchanger

@JamesW do you think my phosphate level could be causing these flakes and needs to be addressed? Thanks.

    Flakes/Scale Buildup in Heat Exchanger

@JamesW I never found a sulfate test but I did do the Taylor phosphate test. I did a few times to confirm consistency. I get 2000 ppb for the pool water and 500 ppb for my tap water. Is that bad? Potentially the issue? Thanks.

    Flakes/Scale Buildup in Heat Exchanger

Do you still recommend the phosphate and sulfate test? I assume the Taylor K-1106 is best for phosphates. What do you recommend for sulfate testing?

    Flakes/Scale Buildup in Heat Exchanger

The bypass seems to be ok. It is just a spring on a guide rod and it seems to require a fair bit of pressure to open up.

    Flakes/Scale Buildup in Heat Exchanger

This photo is from the side where the water flows in and out. When I ream it I do it from the other side (return header) and there is actually build up in every tube to some extent (solid on the tube walls, not all chips). The 4 right tubes you mention always have the most blockage but all of...

    Flakes/Scale Buildup in Heat Exchanger

They bubble a tiny bit when I first add them and give off a yellow discharge but they never completely dissolve. They just go from light blue to white and that is it.

    Flakes/Scale Buildup in Heat Exchanger

Yes. All last year I had a control system that turns off the heater a half hour before the pump shuts off for the night. It also doesn't turn the heater on unless the pump has been running for a half hour. Here is a picture of my equipment if that may be helpful. Thanks for your help.

    Flakes/Scale Buildup in Heat Exchanger

Hello, I continue to struggle with flakes/scale buildup in my heat exchanger (I posted in 2018 on this). Last spring I had to ream scale out of my heat exchanger in order to restore flow. I also set up controls so the heater starts a half hour after the pump is running and shuts off a half...

    Light Blue Flakes

Thanks James and Matt. Matt, No, I don't use any scale control products. Only small metal magic doses to keep stains off the fiberglass. I don't see any evidence of text book scale anywhere. Also I think your comments about my chemistry are from my 2017 values when I took over from the...

    Light Blue Flakes

No. I just checked again and the filter is pure white. When I shut the pump off the heater shuts off too and it made some noise. When I turned the pump back on out came a couple dozen of the blue flakes out the returns.

    Light Blue Flakes

No scale on the pool walls. They are smooth and look great. The next day after I noticed them I inspected and cleaned the filter cartridge but these chips did not show up on the filter at all. This lead me to believe something going on in the heater since it is plumed after the filter. I will...

    Light Blue Flakes

Thanks for the response. I don't know how the chemistry was during the install year while I trusted the pool installer. They were setting the chlorinator high with thrichlor and added powders when opening and closing. They taught me to add Shock (Sodium Di-Chlor) if it got cloudy (I did this...

    Light Blue Flakes

Hello TFP. I usually find what I need by searching but I haven't had luck on this issue. My pool is on 3rd season. 1st season was pool company controlled and last two have been TFP system by me. The last two weeks I have been vacuuming up these light blue flakes (first picture). Pool is...

Lost 3.5ppm of FC in 2 days/Is This Normal???

That is what I have been losing and I am in Michigan as well. I wish my pool was at 77!!! If I put the solar cover on then I only lose about 0.5 FC per day FYI. Something you may want to consider if you are trying to reduce FC loss.

    Battery Operated Pool Vacuum

We just got the pool blaster max and are very happy with it. We add a skimmer sock into the filter bag so it captures the fine sand that used to slip right by. No more hose connection in the skimmer to deal with. My first post. Thanks to all the awesome supporters and help on this site!!!
