Concrete Cantilevered Coping - Does Coping Need to be Separated from Decking?

I am having my old aluminum bullnose coping and concrete decking repaired/replaced with cantilevered concrete coping. It's a vinyl-lined pool with wooden walls. The decking and coping is being poured continuously as one pour and will extend over the top of the now flat liner track...

Vinyl Liner Replaced - Leak Around The Steps (?)

Yesterday afternoon the pool company finished installing the new vinyl liner, cutting out and sealing the returns and skimmer plate, tucking the corners, and removing the vacuums. The pool was filled to 1/2 inch below the bottom of the plastic steps (which we also had "refinished") in the...

Is this indicative of mustard algae?

So I have a SWG pool, CYA is about 60ppm. Last week, I noticed some yellow "dust" in the pool, potentially mustard algae. This was odd as I keep pretty consistent FC levels at or above the mustard minimum. It spread really quickly this past weekend to the point where I'd brush it and it would...

    What the Flocc?

I just realized that it can probably be shop vacc'ed it off of the surface. The pool people are not going to be happy when I ask them to do it... you know, since they created this problem. Any links to this? I was under the impression that the sand should be replaced every few years. Won't...

    What the Flocc?

Had pool people open our pool Monday 5/14 to a green mess. CYA had gone to zero over the winter, so I let them dump a bunch of trichlor into the pool. They came back Wednesday and, without asking me, added Flocculant because "omg the water hadn't completely cleared yet in TWO WHOLE DAYS."...

What kind of damage (if any) did I do?

We recently returned from being away for 2 nights. I cleaned out the pool beforehand, didn't think much of it given the short time away. Well, apparently there was a wind storm while we were away. When we returned, the skimmer basket was completely full and clogged. I cleaned it out and...

    CYA question

I have this question too. I last tested CYA in late July at 60ppm. I bought new R13 from the store (Taylor brand this time) and now my CYA is apparently below 20pppm?!? We did have Irma here where I drained twice. FC: 9 CC: 0 CH: 100 TA: 50 pH: 7.4 Salt: 3200ppm CYA: >0 but <20

    Mustard Algae?

It's definitely the SWG, because the bubbles noticeably disappear when the SWG cell is off.

    Mustard Algae?

I sampled some in a clear glass. The cloudiness seems to actually be very tiny bubbles which dissipate quickly. I wonder if it's related to me turning on the SWG to 100% while FC levels were still 30+

    Mustard Algae?

So something interesting has happened. After the water turned back crystal clear during the intial SLAM and stayed so during the beginning of the mustard algae shock, I've since noticed cloudy water and small bubbles attaching to the pool walls, especially near the shallow return. The bubbles...

    Mustard Algae?

Prior to the SLAM, I brushed thoroughly and vacuumed to waste. I've brushed/vacuumed daily since and thrice yesterday (and soon to be today). Fortunately, my pool has no water effects, no lights, and only two water returns plus the skimmer intake. I've scrubbed everything with a hand brush...

    Mustard Algae?

UPDATE Ran the regular slam @ ~30ppm for a little over 48 hours before I passed an OCLT on Friday night / Saturday morning. On Saturday morning, I then upped the chlorine to about 42ppm and cleaned thoroughly again, removed the ladder (likely my problem IMO), and soaked the equipment and...

    Mustard Algae?

Thanks for the advice. I began the SLAM last night, adding 6 jugs of 8.25% Clorox "performance" bleach bringing FC up to 27 after 30 minutes. Added another jug to bring it up to 30 FC. Waited another hour, tested before bed, down to 27 FC, so added another jug again. Tested in morning, down...

    Mustard Algae?

Thanks. This is only my 2nd time SLAMing. By "regular SLAM" do you mean bring FC up to (and keep it at) the 28FC shock level in the pool school CYA chart, until I pass an OCLT?

    Mustard Algae?

So I think this is mustard algae. It's difficult to see from the picture, but it's clearly mustard in color and is spreading daily on teh bottom of the shallow end of the pool (3.5 ft). It doesn't feel slimy, in fact you can't feel it at all as any touch makes it go... poof! The water itself...

Help this n00b fix their pool

So the SLAM worked, but guess what. Same situation: lots and lots and lots and lots of RAIN followed by one day of sun = algae bloom! I test FC daily when I get home from work, it was never below 7.5 this week, and was 9.0-9.5 on all other days. And yet, here I am, with the algae returning...

Help this n00b fix their pool

Thanks. I turned off the SWG, added 18oz of 31.45% muriatic acid to get down to 7.3 pH, then added 5 jugs of 8.3% Clorox "Performance" bleach. This brought FC up to 25 (from ~14) after 20 minutes and 27.5 after another 30 minutes. At that point, I added one more jug to get FC up to 31 FC (30...

Help this n00b fix their pool

Thanks for the advice. I cranked up the sanitizer output last night and set the pump to run 24 hours, but came home tonight and the algae is worse! I brushed and vacuumed to waste. Tested my FC just now at 10.5, CC at 0.5. How is green slime growing at 10.5 FC? I've been running the...

Help this n00b fix their pool

Ok, I did up the SWG sanitizer output to keep FC in the 5.5-7ppm range. However, I am now starting to see what appears to be green algae, mostly in "dead spots" that can't get good circulation. I noticed something was amiss yesterday when I went to brush and vacuum - the sloped sides of the...

Help this n00b fix their pool

Update: Got FC down to 6 and turned on SWG. 20% output for 8 hours during the day seems to do the trick. I test in early evening, no direct sun on pool, about 2-3 hours after pump/SWG goes off. It's been testing in the 4.5-5.5ppm range at day's end for 5 straight days. No CC. pH has...

Help this n00b fix their pool

Question: We've had rain the past few days and each day the pool is registering about 0.5ppm of CC. Is that normal for rainy days with lots of leaf debris in the pool? Is it indicative of something else?

Help this n00b fix their pool

Update: I did an OCLT last night at 9.5 FC, then tested again this morning at 9.5 FC as well. My SWG is wired into the pump's switch, so it has to be on, but I had the sanitizer output turned completely off... allegedly. Perhaps I should do a test with the pump/SWG off all night. I also...

    Reducing CYA, the Tarp method

This method interests me as I also have a vinyl-lined older pool without main drain. Am I understanding correctly, that you drain the water below the tarp while you fill new water on the tarp? And this maintains pressure on the vinyl liner so that it doesn't pop out, even with a nearly full drain?

Help this n00b fix their pool

Well, case in point on the borates - I can't even do the CYA test correctly yet. I'll wait on the borates. Will re-do CYA test tomorrow and report back. It's very clear. No SLAM process yet as I just "completed" the ill-fated pool-store-directed debacle of a shock. I read now that I...

Ok, I've done 2 rounds of major draining (about 1.5-2 feet down) plus 2 "backwash" drains. I also received my TF100 test kit, magnetic stirrer and drop salinity test. Boy, that CYA test is a tough one. Do you guys do this inside under artificial light? I'm not always able to test during...

Help this n00b fix their pool

Firstly, I've operated a pool for all of 3 weeks now and I admit it - I've already made several mistakes. The two biggest were: 1) Not doing enough research first (ie, reading this forum) and; 2) Listening to pool store associates (never again) That said, here are my stats: In-ground, vinyl...
