how long to run pool pump?

I'm new to TFP and had the same question. I live in Louisiana and do not winterize our pool. When we bought our home it was running for 12 hours. With the help of TFP members I was able to determine that 3-4 hours is plenty of time to run the pump during the winter season. I would say you...

The manual vacuum parts came in over the weekend and we were successfully able to vacuum our pool! Hooking up the vacuum wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. The pool looks great! Thank you again for y'all's help! Aaron

A Whole Series of Problems (and a bunch of questions)

Welcome to TFP! These people are great! I too bought a house in August of 2016 making me a first time pool owner. With the help I got here I was able to take my pool back from the pool company, and am now comfortable with the majority of the processes involved with owing a pool.

Yes, all of the equipment is working properly now. Other than the incorrect timer wiring, I hope not to do anything until I have to. Thank you! I was told by one of the companies that I needed a new filter or at least change the sand in the one I have. I do not know what promped him to...

We have had three people inspect the equipment and all of them wanted to replace something different. Lol. Hard to trust people when they want you to spend $1000 before you even know them. Finally found someone we could trust. Other than a new liner, I think we are ok for a while. Yes, I'm...

Intermatic timer won't turn on/off pump.

Ok, I figured it out. The new timer is wired incorrectly. The switch to turn control the helper pump now also controls the timer. i can not run the timer without the helper pump being on as well. The picture rotated when I uploaded but it is the "top"switch in this picture. You can clearly...

Thank you for the encouragement selftaught! Glad to know I have neighbors on TFP. Kimkats, yes we are! The home is only 9 years old. Just for starters the previous owners "installed" a new motor on the AC unit to run the fan. They hooked up the coil incorrectly and it burned out in 2 weeks...

Well it was an easy "fix". I read a couple posts here on timers and expected to run through a list of things to check. Turns out they wired it to the power switch for the secondary pump. I can't turn off the secondary pump because it turns off the timer. Lol. Can't make this stuff up.

I think we are getting a little too advanced for where I am with the pool. The pool has been poorly maintained and it has two patches on the floor of the liner. I’m afraid that a robot will remove one or both. For now my goal is to learn what I need to do to maintain the pool and to get...

Intermatic timer won't turn on/off pump.

I'm new to owning a pool and very green. When we bought the house 4 months ago we had a new timer installed and it was working great. I recently took over my pool from the pool company and the pump was running for far too long. I reset the on and off dogs to new times and now the pump does...

Thank you. I'll do some reading today and see what I can learn. Everyone suggested a robot vacuum to me, but it's just nor in the budget right now. I like your idea of having a manual vacuum system as a backup to the robot vacuum. I went out and studied the system yesterday. I wanted to run...

Thank you KimKats! The pH is holding steady at 7.4. I had four people verify the color test. Both the pH and TA are within the vinyl liner suggested amounts per Pool School. We have had a service coming out to vacuum the pool. The pervious owners took all of the pool related items with...

The pool looks great. Do I have to be concerned with the dropping TA? I read a bit from KimKat's links, Recpmended Chemicals and Pool Math. I think I need a tutorial on the Pool Math link. I tried entering my gallons and test results, but it didn't change anything. For now I think I'm in...

I changed the timer to run from 11:00pm to 7:00am just to get through this cold snap. It's supposed to get into the 20's. I'll change ti again Sunday after i get a weather report. Yup, the inline chlorinator is empty. New test results are: FC = 16 CC = 1.5 pH = 7.4 TA = 60 CYA = 120 FC...

Thank you triptyx. I was able to find helpful information on the new pressure gauge using the search option. I will start my topic research there. With the projected cold weather this weekend I will change the timer to run from 11:00pm to 5:00am. I expect that this will decrease the FC and...

Had some unexpected things come up today so we didn't run the tests. I did read up on the pump run time and I think I'm running way too long. Espically since it's winter. Since my FC is hgh I'm going to turn it back to 8 hours and see how it goes. What is the optimal time to run a pool...

Thank you. I kind of feel like I'm being a pain in y'all's butt! Unfortunately the people we bought the house from did not take care of ANYTHING. Even simple things were not maintained. I'll read up on the pump run time, the CYA diluted test, and flushing the filter then get back to y'all...

How long should the pump run for during a 24 hour period? The pool company currently has the timer running from 7am until 7pm. That's most likely due to the inline chlorination. Since my FC is high, should I run the pump for a shorter period of time? If so, what is the best time to run the...

Ok, two coats of 5200 on the inside and outside with a day between each to dry. Fired her up and it's holding. Pressure gauge is reading 18 pounds. Been running for 20 minutes and looking good. Thanks for your help and luck!

Marine 5200 sealant. I was told it was the best. We took off the top and can get to the crack from the inside. Once it drys the pressure will ush the glue into the crack. Wish us luck!

Thanks Triptyx, I believe I have no CC. I thought it had to turn pink, but it wouldn't. Now I have a new issue. The multiport valve housing is cracked where the pressure gauge screws in. Now I know why they didn't replace the broken pressure gauge. I'll be trying to repair the crack...

We did the tests last night and I think I'm ok but not perfect. We will be redoing the tests again this weekend to try and verify the results. FC = 20 Yes it's high. I expected this from reading about others that use pucks for their clorination. CC = ? I couldn't get a good result, I...
