Replacing pump, adding filter for sheer descent return from negative edge basins

Jason, yes you have it exactly correct, the waterfall is the only way back to the main pool for the overflow water. My first year with the pool I had quite a few algae blooms because although the water in the main pool had a chlorine level of at least 2 or 3, I discovered that the basins...

Replacing pump, adding filter for sheer descent return from negative edge basins

The main pump draws from two central drains in the middle of the pool, plus a skimmer and a robot. It does not directly take water from the overflow basin/waterfall circuit. The basins are always relatively dirty compared to the rest of the pool and rely on the waterfall/negative edges so they...

Replacing pump, adding filter for sheer descent return from negative edge basins

I've got a 9500gal pebbletech pool. The main pump that runs it is a 1.5hp Hayward single speed going through a Hayward 60 DE filter. All of that is fine for now. The pool also has a negative edge, actually 2 negative edges split in the middle by a wall with a single 36" sheer descent...

Color LED Light Upgrade Option Reviews

Reviving this old thread again.... I've got a Pentair Amerilite incandescent fixture which is totally shot (leaking). The seal where the cord enters the fixture is cracked and the metal housing itself has pinholes. I want to switch to a color LED and I don't want to replace the lens/housing...

SLAM not working, chlorine consumption steady (not dropping)

Sorry I dropped off this thread, I was sick as a dog for two weeks. My chlorine consumption never declined, so I decided to open up my filter and do a cleaning. I found a thin black layer of what I believe was mold or something. It was between a layer of brown silt and the white DE. I used a...

SLAM not working, chlorine consumption steady (not dropping)

I'm now more than 2weeks into the slam, definitely over $100 worth of chlorine, can't imagine what my electric bill is going to be running 2 pumps 24x7 for weeks (infinity pool) and still ZERO change in chlorine consumption (I'm putting in 242 oz daily ($6), when it was stable last summer at a...

SLAM not working, chlorine consumption steady (not dropping)

It's been a over a week now filter running 24x7. Keep adding chlorine to keep my level at 20 for last few days (was 14). Pool is still clear and spotless, chlorine consumption has still not declined at all. Last year I turned it into a green swamp 3x accidentally. In each case I got it under...

SLAM not working, chlorine consumption steady (not dropping)

2nd season with a pool, having some some trouble again. Last year, I got a house with a pool, and non-working DE filter (collapsed grates). Fixed the filter, came to TFP SLAMed it and all went well. It took me a couple of tries to figure out how often I had to cycle the pumps. The answer was...

Air leak, please identify this Hayward pump

Closer investigation revealed some tree debris (crush ficus seed or something) squashed into the o-ring. I scrubbed it clean and cleaned and lubed the mating surface, no more air leak. I've also ordered a spare o-ring for when I do need to replace it. Thanks again. cheers, c

Air leak, please identify this Hayward pump

Thank you both for the help. The lid is indeed on backwards in that photo, it's an old picture, taken before I owned the house and re-installed the lid properly ;) cheers, c

Air leak, please identify this Hayward pump

So, looks like if I reduce the picture to 200 pixels wide, I can use the last 24kb of my quota. LOL.

Air leak, please identify this Hayward pump

We started swimming again a few days ago. I noticed today that the return line closest to the pump is blowing small bubbles. I bled the filter and after about 10 mins it needed to be bled again. The first thing I want to swap is the strainer o-ring, since I've never changed it and I've heard...

Where Does The Water Go When The Pump Is Turned Off?

Mine has done that twice, once it was the seals in the backwash valve which allowed water to dribble out of the hose (leaving a constantly wet hose). The other time it was the seal in the air vent valve on top of the filter. It sealed well enough to prevent water from going out when the pump...

What kind of jet is this?!

If I can find the flush ones, I wouldn't mind swapping them out again. The replacements I got are cheapo's from Amazon, 5 for $6, so I don't have a lot invested in them. I don't have a full set of the flush ones, one of the eyeballs was missing, two of the collars were damaged. I've only got...

What kind of jet is this?!

Poolguy was right, the regular 1.5" replacements do fit. I swapped 3 of the 4 yesterday and now I've actually got some decent flow and can push surface leaves toward the skimmer. Progress! There is just one of the old style eyeball fittings still stuck, the others eventually came out by-hand...

What kind of jet is this?!

jblizzle, When I search "in-wall eyeball pool jet" at amazon, INYOPOOLS, Leslies, etc I don't see anything that looks like what I've got. I just see this style: Custom Molded 30220 3/4 inch Inlet Eyeball Fitting I've been unable to tighten them by hand enough to make them stay put, and I've...

What kind of jet is this?!

Poolguy, so are the 1.5" standard fittings actually 1.84" in diameter at the threads? I would have expected 1.5", but *plumbing*, so who knows. cheers, c

What kind of jet is this?!

My pool has some strange looking eyeball jets. They are black and don't have the usual external ring. They are old and worn, so the eyeballs automagically rotate to an orientation that blocks flow which means that more water has to return through the fountains, chilling the pool. Good in...

    Pebbletech Infitiy Pool trouble

kimkats, yes, the PoolMath has been accurate for me, I'm getting the changes I expect for a given amount of addition. I do have some calcium deposits at the waterline, whats good for removing them without messing up my water balance? cheers, c

    Pebbletech Infitiy Pool trouble

Caco, I agree with your thoughts, adding the chlorine to the overflows instead of the main pool looks like good insurance and a variable speed pump is in the plan. cheers, c

    Pebbletech Infitiy Pool trouble

OCLT: Was 6.5 last night, calculator called for 49oz to bring to 10. I added 50oz because of the divisions on my measuring cup which should bring it to 10.05-10.09 according to the calculator. Just tested now (6:15am, sun barely up) got 10.5. So loss was 0 overnight, cc<0.5, everything still...

    Pebbletech Infitiy Pool trouble

Ok, today FC was down to 6.5 and I did the PH test again. Got 8.4 (full scale), added 4oz muriatic waited 30mins got 8.4, added 8oz more, waited 30mins got 7.5. So my PH has been very high the whole time. My mistake was interpreting the 8.4 PH reading as 8.4 rather than as "8.4 or higher"...

    Pebbletech Infitiy Pool trouble

I *think* I completed the slam but I'm not 100% confident. Chlorine consumption remains low, water is clear, no visible algae. i didn't confirm that my pH adjustment worked before I started last week, so I'll retest in the morning. My FC should be below 10, so I'll get a valid reading, bring the...

    Pebbletech Infitiy Pool trouble

Ok,it looks like I inadvertently exaggerated my puck usage a little. The tub is buried in the garage since I switched to bleach, I thought it was a 40# tub, but it's actually a 35# and there are 11 pucks left in it (1/2# ea). So I've actually put in a total of 29.5# of pucks, not 40# like I...

    Pebbletech Infitiy Pool trouble

Thanks, there are (4) spitting lion heads, one was clogged when I moved in. I dismantled the valve at the pump, duct taped my shop vac nozzle to it and with the vacuum running jammed a pipe snake into the lion's mouth a couple of times until the rock dislodged and ended up in the shopvac 40ft...

    Pebbletech Infitiy Pool trouble

I checked the chlorine in main pool and overflows again (pumps off). Chlorine in main pool down to 19, overflow now down to 17 (direct sun, 96deg outside currently). Just to be safe, I'll go by the highest CYA reading and boost the FC to 28 (up from 24). Being an engineer, I decided to bust...
