    Closing and preserving the pool

Hi guys, thanks to this forum, you all helped me turn a nasty green pool to a clean crisp sparkling pool. Unfortunately, it is more maintenance than I can handle at this time. We've had rain 14 days straight and worms/leaves/debris have been flying its way back to the pool. I've really only...

    Adding DE to Cartridge filter

I read somewhere online awhile ago that you can add DE to a cartridge filter. Is this possible/recommended or will it do damage to the cartridge?

Weird Blue and Gray Spots on the walls of the pool

Not sure what the original color was. I'm assuming blue? I tried scrubbing it with a brush, but it doesn't seem to be coming off. It is a concrete pool? there's no vinyl liner or anything.

Weird Blue and Gray Spots on the walls of the pool

Thank you for everyone's green pool problem. I'm finally getting good readings on my chemistry. Now I have another problem, but was not sure whether I should start a new thread since it is a separate problem or continue on the old one. If I was suppose to continue on the old one, I apologize...

    Newbie just opened pool

Re: Trying to restore green Pool Welcome to my problem this past week. As everyone will probably tell you, get a good test kit from tftestkits.net which allows you to measure accurate FC, CC, TC and other chemicals of your pool accurately. Use the pool calculator at poolcalculator.com to...

    Trying to restore green Pool

Oh maybe that is why. I always vacuum when the filter is on the brink of being clogged (figure i'll get the most out of it before I take it out and clean it) They are around 1-2 years old left from previous owner. Do you have that same problem too whoozer? How do you vacuum your pool?

    Trying to restore green Pool

I keep having the problem when trying to vacuum up the pool. There's a lot of very fine debris at the bottom (sand/pollen/dead algae maybe?) I vacuum it up through the vacuum line, but then it gets spit back out into the pool again. Is this normal or is there something wrong in regards to the...

    Trying to restore green Pool

Thanks whoozer. Time to waste another $30. Man pools are high maintenance. I've spent more on the pool this past week than i have on my wife :D

    Trying to restore green Pool

do y'all recommend me add cya via the instant conditioner I used before? Dichlor? Or other methods once my FC is stable?

    Trying to restore green Pool

Well I guess I'll have to check tonight. I use chlorox, but then I also have some walmart brand (great stuff?) bleach that I believe says unscented. It was on-sale for like $1 a jug. I looked at the ingredients and they both say 6% sodium hydro something something and 94% other ingredients so...

    Trying to restore green Pool

butterfly: Yeah I used liquid CYA. http://www.intheswim.com/Pool-Chemicals ... nditioner/ <---- That Stuff Mkenyon2: Now you mention it, I'm not sure...I have to home and check the bottles...I didn't think there was a difference. What does that do if it is unscented rather than regular?

    Trying to restore green Pool

Chem geek: I must have typed it wrong, I did add CYA last night along with the chlorox bleach. This morning when I tested the water, I had FC 5ppm, but CYA 0ppm.

    Trying to restore green Pool

Chem geek: Wow that first sentence you typed made me feel so much better. I'm planning to continue adding Bleach into the pool until it is stable as everyone has mentioned. Is it ok to do this even without CYA? I'll probably be waisting more bleach doing this, but I'm ok with it as long as...

    Trying to restore green Pool

I used this: http://www.intheswim.com/Pool-Chemicals ... nditioner/ Added about 1/2 -3/4 gallon into the pool. I did a bucket test last night. Added 1/2 teaspoon into 2 gallons of water just to see and got FC- 28ppm CC- 1ppm waited 1.5 hours and tested again and got: FC- 23ppm CC- 1ppm...

    Trying to restore green Pool

Well I raised the shock level up to 20 last night just to see and this morning it was at 5ppm. What is freaking me out is that I also simultaneously emptied a bottle of conditioner in it and it has CYA = 0 this morning. I tried the test with some conditioner and tap water to double triple...

Should I leave the pump running over night or just run for an hour and then turn it off?

    Trying to restore green Pool

I bought the ammonia test kit from petco (testing for NH3/NH4+) and did it twice and came back with results between 0 and 0.25ppm (Color was a little bit in between yellow (0ppm) and lime green (0.25ppm). So pretty much non-existent? I guess this would not be my problem of the missing CYA...

    Trying to restore green Pool

Chem Geek, I see what you mean when you recommend the bucket test. That way I can be sure that it will work. So is my goal for the bucket test to keep adding 1/4 teaspoon of 6% bleach until the ammonia level is 0ppm? (assuming that I get an ammonia reading?)

    Trying to restore green Pool

Thanks everyone I'll get an ammonia test kit tomorrow and see. I used the TFtest kit twice and came out with 0. In order to make sure I did the test correctly, I tried it again, but this time I purposely added a couple drops of conditioner and I actually got a result so I was pretty sure I...

    Trying to restore green Pool

I hope it is testing error, but I've had the water tested many times before and it was 20ppm every time. I think it was last week I added some "instant conditioner" and got tested it again at Leslie's (all test have been done at Leslie's before because all I had were test strips from Walmart)...

    Trying to restore green Pool

Chem geek, Well my first and main problem was that the FC would not stay above 0 for more than 1 night. So it has been at 0 for quite awhile. I ordered the test kit and have been waiting for it to come in before taking any actions. In the mean time, I had been putting one bottle of bleach...

    Trying to restore green Pool

HELP!!! CYA disappeared I have a problem now. My CYA is 0 (ZERO), which I don't understand. I took the water sample to Leslie's (They are my only second opinion as far as water testing goes) and they also came up with zero. A couple weeks back before I started posting, my CYA was 20. So I...

    Trying to restore green Pool

Thanks whoozer, I was so afraid that I would have to deal with the metal staining and FC at the same time. Alright, back to original plan.

    Trying to restore green Pool

Oh man, so what happens if it is metal stain? Continue with the shock treatment and then deal with it, or will metal staining affect the shock treatment? Thanks Pool mom.

    Trying to restore green Pool

zea3: Alright, thanks for the confirmation. Last week it was actually a lot dirtier and was as green as yours (maybe not as slimy looking and definitely no table and cement blocks :-D ), but listened to the advice of people on the forum and vacuumed and put a bottle of chlorine in everyday...

    Trying to restore green Pool

Alright, the test kit finally came in and I have a day off tomorrow to really take care of the pool. So far I'm still not getting a chlorine reading. Here is my game plan: -Check chemistry of pool with test kit. -Run Pump -Dump clorox bleach to bring pool water to shock level -After 30...
