Can't maintain free chlorine at SLAM levels...what am I doing wrong?

Just want to add, you did not mention brushing. That is a very important part of a SLAM. You really need to hit every surface with a pool brush to break the biofilm that the algae uses to protect itself from the chlorine. Also, not all algae can be seen, at first it is free floating single...

Our pool is green and pool store says to replace sand

Each SWCG cell manufacturer has different salt level requirements. You should have a user manual or perhaps a chart inside the door of your control box that will tell you your salt level range. Once you learn your pool, you can test some things less often. Different variables will affect how...

what direction should the returns be facing?

My two returns are on the same wall with my skimmer. I have mine pointed away from the skimmer to create a water flow pattern as seen in this very sad looking drawing that I just made.

what direction should the returns be facing?

Up to ripple the water if you are trying to aerate to increase your pH. Otherwise, position them to eliminate any still areas of water. Some people will put some ping pong balls in the pool to float around while fine tuning the eyeball jets to help them visualize the water currents.

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Water loss through backwashing, vacuum to waste, a leak, splashing water out of pool. Example, in an 18'x36' rectangular pool, lowering the water level by 6 inches by backwashing will drain out 2400 gallons of water. That could easily drop your CYA by 3 or 4 ppm. I'm not saying that you drop...

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Also, adding 1# of stabilizer in your 22,000 gallon pool will only raise your CYA level about 5ppm. That's probably not enough of an increase to even see a difference on the CYA test, especially at lower levels.

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

The CYA test is very dependent on consistent lighting conditions. It uses the turbidity of the water to show you your CYA level. If your sample is in direct sunlight on a bright day the sample will appear more opaque and the dot will be less visible. That same sample on an overcast cloudy day...

    Sand filter Efficiency question

I recently installed a flow meter in my pool plumbing. My GPM hangs out around 33 with my VS pump at full speed (3450 rpm). So, today I reconnected my third return that used to have a second pump running a Polaris cleaner. This third return allowed me to get to about 36gpm. Then I removed the...

Our pool is green and pool store says to replace sand

Ok, point the jets on your returns up towards the surface so that they ripple the water. This will help bring up your pH. Do you know what your TA level was at?

Our pool is green and pool store says to replace sand

Is your FC at slam levels? If so, do you have a pH meter? The pH test in your test kit won't give you a good result if your FC is greater than 10.
