Coping Algae and Other Stains and Damage

We had our coping replaced last year (from the old red bricks of the 80’s) and for the first time we have Algae - black and green on the coping. I’m shocked. Shouldn’t it be sealed to prevent this? I’ve been scrubbing it with a metal brush and it is much improved but I feel like I’m scrubbing...

    Costs

We’ve been TFP for a full season and as we are kicking off this season hubby is wondering if we are doing it wrong- we use about a gallon a day - so that’s about $80 a month on bleach alone at about $2.75 a gallon. Sometimes we get it cheaper but sometimes not. Are we missing something?

    Pool pump upgrade

We are remodeling the pool - it is a 30 year old pool and we aren’t doing anything too fancy but we wanted to get a dual cycle pump. Recs? 16000G in ground non-saltwater

    Pool Remodel

    Closing 101 in Dallas

We are doing our first TFP winter and I guess we need to “close”? We’ve always just done what we usually do but a little less frequently. We have a bunch of left over tabs from when we went to TFP - can we do that over winter? We are heading out of town for thanksgiving and plan to use tabs...

    pH Swing

Our pH has been historically on the low side. 7.2 pretty consistently. All of a sudden today I checked it with a strip and just confirmed it is up at 8.0 Zoiks. We haven't done much other than use the heck out of the pool and it has been hotter than heck out here. So I guess we need some...

    Keeping that gorgeous water

So we did it! 4th of July we opened our pool and couldn't be happier with the crystal clear water. Now I'm trying to figure out keeping the FC in that narrow range. We are checking and night and most often swim in the afternoon. So we check at night and it is 4, so we add to make it 6...

Working through our post SLAM numbers

Things don't look too bad- we are adding some CYA this morning. It looks like we could stand to add some Borax but I'm not sure if we should do that at the same time as the Stabilizer. We are hoping to have some folks over to swim tomorrow or Wednesday. Questions: Do we assume borate levels...

    Using a wire brush

We have some tough algae spots and are using a wire brush and I assume that will change our water chemistry as we scrape the plaster. Is this something we need to address mid SLAM? I'm guessing the alkalinity goes up. We will test tonight after being out for a day trip -but I'm anticipating...

    DE removal from pool

Long story short - we had been having DE pump into the pool for about 6 months. We can now see when it settles there is a layer of DE on the bottom with thicker deposits around the banked corners. Yesterday we brushed all around and quickly got back to cloudy water where we could not see. 24...

Oh geeze- ready to fill this pool in.

Well after suspecting a DE leak during our SLAM - hubby took apart the filter and found holes in the fabric. So new filters went in. He recharged and that was Wednesday. Today we unearthed buckets of leaf debris in the bottom of the pool and now we've cleared the leaf filter to the filter...

    Hola

I'm not totally new here- I've been lurking and posting and am now slamming, but hoping to actually remodel/replaster new tile, coping, deck etc this month. Hubby has been doing the pool since the start of 2016 and I suspected he was a victim of being pool-stored. So I searched the internet...

Is this cloud DE or Algae?

Mid SLAM - water chemistry is stable and looking good. Water is super cloudy and when I sweep it clouds up. Brief video- but it is mostly visible when I do the step in the last 10secs Pool Cloud - YouTube N. Texas 25,000G IG pool -installed in 80's owned by us for 4 years Maintained by us...

    Mid-SLAM questions

Our pump and filter are relatively new, but the filter is old. It is a DE filter. It has been a year since we did a total filter cleanout. I think this is limiting our SLAM - the water chemistry is stable, we are able to maintain our Cl and CC is 0, but it is still so cloudy. We did a...

    N Texas AquaBRIGHT

Anyone done AquaBRIGHT in N Texas? We are about to replaster and this seems like a good option. We had explored pebble tech type products but decided to just go with plaster. Now thinking we need to at least talk to someone about AquaBRIGHT. Any experiences in the area? N. Texas 25,000G IG...

Silly question: how do *you* vacuum?

I use the pole to move the inlet around the bottom of the pool in a relatively quick motion. Hubby likes to sort of let it sit in one spot for a few secs before moving it just a few inches over and then waits for a few (5-10 secs) With the pool so cloudy we are totally vacuuming blind here...

    2.5 days into SLAM

The water is still super cloudy. FC is 14 (1 hr after adding bleach this am) CC is 0.5 CYA = BDL (but adding to bring to 30) We were not able to scrub in the last 24 hrs because we have had 5+ inches of rain in the form of storms all afternoon/night. Hoping to get a break in the weather to go...

    CYA question

We are in the middle of slamming. When we started our CYA was BDL. It was suggested on here that we add granules in a sock and proceed as if it was 30. The back of the granules said 6lbs for a 25K pool. I didn't know if we were at Zero or what since detection level seems to be 20. So I...

    Adjusting pH during SLAM

So we are slamming and our CYA was BDL so we added 4lbs in socks and are treating it as if our CYA was 30 per the advice on the forum. Of course, our pH has dropped to 7 with this addition. Do we correct this mid slam?

    Cl testing

We are slamming and added 7.6 jugs of bleach last night -Cl was zero before adding. We woke up and Cl was 8 So added another 2.x (I can't recall and don't have it with me) Lunch hubby just tested and Cl was 4. That did not seem right to us - so he used a test strip and it was 10. (Cloudy day...

    After SLAM Questions

So we are in the middle of using the old bleach to keep our FC around 12 and hubby has questions: So we keep it at 12 (per the chart CYA/Cl chart) and then we wait until our overnight losses are minimal. Then presumably that means we wake up one morning with a FC of 11.... Does that mean we...

    CYA before SLAM?

Need ideas for deck / decking

We are redoing our pool and deck and have decided to expand to the patio. I envisioned a wood/composite deck for the patio that would create a nice space. For a number of reasons the wood deck part is not happening. So now we are looking at concrete/flagstone for the patio. I'm worried that...
