Is it necessary to keep the 2nd intake? Or would everything work fine using just the skimmer, and plugging off both original intakes?

Yes, I have the skimmer. I'd like to replace the hoses with 1.5". The current hoses from the pool to the T will not fit on the skimmer connection. Will the pump draw enough water if I only have 1 hose coming from the skimmer?

Ok, I spent about an hour in the PVC aisle at Home Depot, completely confused about what I need. I'm assuming you've replaced the original inlet fitting (pool to pump), in order to connect the pvc? I am starting with this.

Wow, so far I've added 1/2 cup of de 3 times. Each time, within an hour or so, I had barely any flow and had to backwash.
