Definite algae possible mustard - alternatives?

Perhaps I didn't phrase it properly, but that's partly because I don't want to discuss my physical problems openly. The problem is multiple-time-per-day brushing during a slam, not during normal times. But you're right about this likely not being the place to fully consider alternatives to the...

Definite algae possible mustard - alternatives?

Thanks for your input, but I don't believe you read my OP. I drained my pool last month and the CYA is now close to 45, so I don't wish to lower it further. I then slammed my pool and followed though with mustard shock, though I can no longer brush the pool. I believe I explained that I can no...

Definite algae possible mustard - alternatives?

Thanks. I should consider SWG. When I considered it previously there was a concern that it stained sandstone in this high-pH ground water. Is this still a consideration? The trichlor tabs do raise CYA, but not very rapidly - I only need to drain water every two or three years.

Definite algae possible mustard - alternatives?

I've definitely had to brush of algae around the spillway to the skimmer basket, and am noticing possible indications of mustard bloom, and I need some alternatives to clearing it up and keeping it clear. Tonight's chemical test showed the following: FC - 8.0 CC - 0 pH = 7.8 (so I added 16oz...

    WaterGuru - A Test

I ordered one in July and, unfortunately, had to return it yesterday. The main problem was the erratic chlorine reading. At first I thought it was a predictable 2 ppm under my FAS test reading; If that had been so I probably would have kept it. Reading off is okay as long as it's predictably...

Overnight chlorine drop test - FC rises

No, it's just turned off; I expect it's leaking, since the pump's on 24-hours. I was just reading about phosphates and how algae take them up to grow and release them when they die - I wondered if was a recognized phenomenon. Wasn't likely - I searched - but there was always the possibility I...

Overnight chlorine drop test - FC rises

I wonder if this recommended process has changed since the last time I had mustard algae... Since I go seven years or so between bouts, I'll check the current recommendation the next time. I note, however, that I still don't know why my overnight chlorine drop test showed increases the...

Overnight chlorine drop test - FC rises

I did two days of FC 20 before starting the four days I mentioned in the original post. I didn't do the OVDT on the first two days, just the MA part.

Overnight chlorine drop test - FC rises

I'm four days into a chlorine shock for mustard algae and for the last two days the morning Overnight Chlorine Drop Test reading is higher than the previous night. That's never happened to me before - am I missing something? Assuming it isn't normal, I can think of three explanations...

    WaterGuru - A Test

That's a very useful compilation - thanks. I don't test as much as I used to. My pH rises very predictably and my FC drops - if not predictably, at least regularly, so I get by with regular additions of muriatic acid every two days. I've pretty much ignored phosphates, but that will now change...

    WaterGuru - A Test

That's an extremely useful compilation. Thanks. I don't test as much as I used to because we have water in which the pH rises predictably and the FC drops, if not predictably, then regularly, and at 15% of CYA it isn't hard to balance it there. I suppose I need to look harder at phosphates...

    Mustard algae treatment without chlorine?

Nice to hear. Would it be advantageous to have the sandstone coping sealed every year or so? BTW, I'm brushing and vacuuming sandstone off the bottom, anyway. Then all I have to worry about is SWG shortages...

    Mustard algae treatment without chlorine?

Thanks. I have considered a SWG and may do that, but I've had long reservations about using it with sandstone coping, given out really hard water.

    Mustard algae treatment without chlorine?

Thanks. I'm aware liquid chlorine is preferred, but as I mentioned chlorine is unavailable and I'm looking for alternatives. Also as I mentioned, "aeration" is a well-known way to help treat water, and since I don't have a fountain, the sheers must serve, even though they increase the pH...

    Mustard algae treatment without chlorine?

I'm starting to see indications of mustard algae on the sides of the pool. What are some ways to get rid of it with inadequate chlorine supplies? Answers that increase the CYA will be okay as I'll drain/refill as necessary. I'm not quite ready to treat for mustard. The overnight chlorine drop...

    Pool level valve?

    That's it, yes.

    Pool level valve?

Is there a recommended pool level float valve other than Fluidmaster? I believe my pool installer made the base of the water chamber too low and the Fluidmaster shank might be a little short. The chamber it fits in is 5.5-inches in diameter.

Float Fill Valves - Pentair T29 and Fluidmaster are the same

I suspect you're right about the anti-backflow requirements being older than my pool; it was presented to me that way, but perhaps that was politeness when I bought the house. I know now that my pool builder uses less re-bar in construction than other builder, so it's not a stretch that they...

Float Fill Valves - Pentair T29 and Fluidmaster are the same

Edited: Yes they are. I don't know whether one is installed on my irrigation system; I do know there was no Pressure Reduction Valve on it until I put it on, lowering pressure from 138 psi to 80 psi.

Float Fill Valves - Pentair T29 and Fluidmaster are the same

I do not. As I understand it these are only required for new construction and I and others have been grandfathered to the older standard. The blocked nipple is required under those circumstances.

Float Fill Valves - Pentair T29 and Fluidmaster are the same

Since Fluidmaster stopped making their pool auto-fill valves I've been looking for a replacement. I thought I'd found it in the Pentair T29 valve. People on Amazon also think so, but you'll find about half are unhappy to find the valves don't seem to work the way they should. I bought one...

How to Determine When to Re-Plaster?

Thanks. I don't know if I'm losing water, and I'm not sure about "scuffing toes;" that one spot looks bad but it's petty limited. I appreciate it.

How to Determine When to Re-Plaster?

How do you know when you need to re-plaster? I twisted the arms of Gary Pools here in San Antonio and, while they wanted to send someone out, they did tell me that plastering starts at $5,000 and goes up. Is this true? (The pool is perhaps 10 years old, and we have been maintaining a good...

    Polyquat Dosage

Last results post: Since my extended, proper shock in October - November 2014 I have maintained the 15% of CYA level for FC in the pool. I have had no further indications of any algae. I conclude that the multiple short shocks I had done prior to then (1) had never actually cleared the algae...

Using Filter Pump to Lower Water Level

I discovered shopping locally, kinda, if you stretch a point and allow big box stores as "local." I bought at Lowes a Utilitech 1/3HP pump, figuring the return policy is better than the 30 days Amazon allows, and I get to heft the thing to help determine how much plastic's inside. Feels pretty...

Using Filter Pump to Lower Water Level

For posterity, I tried one of these pumps but it didn't work out for me. It worked, yes, but so slowly I couldn't rinse my toothbrush with it - I measured one gallon per minute at 7 feet - much less than the 14 gallons per minute at 10 feet in the specs. That wasn't enough so I'm looking again.

    Remote Stopped Working

My Fiberstars remote control for the waterfall and the underwater light stopped working, possibly after a nearby lightning strike popped at least one circuit breaker in the house. The CBs I know to reset (main breaker panel, aux pump panel, and GFCI on the pump control) I have reset. I'll have...

    Quality Vacuum Head

Thanks. I'd better go there and see - my search terms are inadequate and I can't find anything online that I like. I thought Leslie's bought Warehouse. The one I used to go to down at 151 and 410 certainly changed.
