    What a wonderful site!

The really weird thing is, I was actually going to tell.Victor that he should start his own post, cause he will get "buried"

HAH! Weird. I am from Oz as well. I posted a thread with the exact same title, and get notified of a reply, and find it's a new thread! :)

    Pool Covers: DIY?

I was thinking of making rather than buying a roller. However, even agricultural aluminium pipe 100mm diameter is going to have 6mm walls and cost pretty much the same as a ready-made roller. What sources can I try as alternatives? Also, I was wondering about actually rolling the roller along...

    Salinity (and NOTHING else!)

OH WHAT? Now I am being told that I can't use the autovac to clean up the flocculant! This is all nonsense. It's just not worth it.

    Salinity (and NOTHING else!)

I figure the way this pool has been treated, I can't do too much harm with a few weeks of gradual lowering of the salt and calcium by natural attrition. So. Flocculate and vacuum.CYA then shock. I am not going to throw away water. If it goes pear-shaped then so be it.

    Salinity (and NOTHING else!)

OK. I am assuming that the stuff that is deposited on the pool is calcium. I am going to shock the pool to see if any of the cloudiness is the beginnings of other stuff. To avoid dumping so much water, does anyone know the dangers of having a high calcium level? My plan is to shock, floc, and...

    Salinity (and NOTHING else!)

HAH! I have already been doing that, trying to get rid of the suspended calcium. A lot of it is suspended calcium, but I have learned that the beginnings of algae can cause cloudiness as well. It's really difficult to tell, because the water was clear, but with huge deposits of stuff on the...

    Salinity (and NOTHING else!)

Thanks for the reply. I am awaiting delivery of a SWG. There is one there now but it's a joke for the size of the pool, from all I have read and been told. It is also in pretty bad shape and very old. So no chemical to lower CH? :x Scheme water = tap water, from the town mains. I will do a...

    Salinity (and NOTHING else!)

OK. I am the guy with the mucky pool. I have confirmed the fact that the 7800 ppm TDS is salt, using a NaCl-only test strip. I know they are RnR but it's close to my TDS meter reading and so way out of the ball park that it does not matter. The PH is 7.4 Yay! But that is jumping about. It was...

    Pool Cleaner Types

HAH! Crikey! Have you ever tried running them all at once, or holding races?

    Pool Cleaner Types

OK. Thanks for that. So it replaces the "eyeballs" that are in the pool.

    Pool Cleaner Types

Whew! :) Thanks for that! So that narrows it down to two main contenders, with just a choice of bags. Interesting about the suction vs pressure side versions, where the pump cannot run dry if the bag gets clogged. How is a pressure side one plumbed? More to think about.

    Cleaning out a mucky pool

Yeah, Calcium certainly can play a role in TDS. I will look at getting the TDS 100, but I might try to get something locally first. Even if it's not dead accurate, it will let me start to get a handle on exactly what is happening. I may well grab some flocculant as well. See what that does.

Sand filter - newbie needs help!

Boy! I am actually going to put my toe in the water :-D and try to help. Apart from what others said (IS there sand in the filter?) I have noticed that when the filter gets clogged, the output water is as cloudy as the input So the question "have you backwashed" is very possibly a start...

    Pool Cleaner Types

Yeah I know I know. I have read the PC School section. However. Still some questions. Some of you may know me as the guy who was coerced into 't mooky pool. I am still struggling to get it it free of sediment, and I know a pool cleaner is a must. First question. If I get a simple suction type...

    Cleaning out a mucky pool

Trouble is it's salty. TDS 7800. Not many plants are going to like that beyond seaweed.....:) Water that lies on the blanket dries out and there is an enormous amount of crust. Hehe another part to the story. the backwash pipe is blocked solid (as I explosively discovered when I tried to back...

    Cleaning out a mucky pool

I tried the 24/7 idea, but yes, it just ran up into clog mode and that's not good for anything, so I am running it for 8 hours and then backwashing. Also the gunk settles even when the pump is running, so I am wasting a lot of power as far as the really bad stuff is concerned, if I just let the...

    Cleaning out a mucky pool

Thanks very much for that. 800ppm OVER! Ecch! That's the last thing I need. Our water runs at about 200ppm, so it's not too bad. I will definitely try to locate a dropper test in Oz, or even import (but I want to get on with this). If that shows a much lower reading, I need to find...

    Cleaning out a mucky pool

Yeah you may be right. I just feel bad about wasting so much water. I feel that if I can get rid of the muck, It should be doable to get the water right, although the TDS really bothers me. I think the people who had the pool before had even less idea than i about pools, and could care less...

    Cleaning out a mucky pool

I do not have test results yet. Stuff is on order, such as test kits etc. I do know that PH is 6.5 and TDS is about 7500  . Just starting to get the gunk out of the pool, chlorinating to keep it from going green (the chlorinator is inoperative). It's so full of stuff that this is my main...

    What a wonderful site!

Hehe about the SWCG! Cleaning my electrodes now, just to see if it actually does work. Ok. The pool has a manual vacuum. The tube is all shot to bits, but that's only a few bucks (per metre!). It also has a ratty old "kreepy krawley", but I would imagine that technology has moved on in say...

    What a wonderful site!

OK. I thought this might be the reply I was going to get when I mentioned all the gadgets! :-D If you don't have an auto cleaner (by this I assume you mean a thing that crawls around picking stuff up) how do you get rid of stuff that settles on the bottom/sides of the pool? I can see getting...

    What a wonderful site!

Thanks guys. I do have to say that one of the 'pool guys" did say to me "well, if you do not have any hobbies, you have one now" :). So he was at least honest. Nick

    What a wonderful site!

I have just bought a house which has a pool that my stronger half (wife) insists we keep. I am going along in the hope that we at least use it. It's in a shocking condition. The SWG is a 140 size and the recommended is at least 250 size. I would have to pump for 16 hours a day to keep the...
