Currently SLAM'ing and eating bleach like mad

I will check out the higher concentration bleach at Leslie's (which is actually closer to me that WM) at $4. Bleach at 6% is $2.67 or so.

Currently SLAM'ing and eating bleach like mad

It's 6% bleach from Wal Mart. From last night to this am, the FC went from 19 to 18.5 and the CC is .5 so I think we are finally there! I did go through 25 bottles of bleach in 3 days, so that was fun!

Currently SLAM'ing and eating bleach like mad

I wonder if it is even getting up to 24. I just checked it after 3 hours and it was down to 18.5, that is the lowest reduction I have had so far. Just added another jug of bleach per Pool Math and we will see what it is in the am...

From 10pm to 7 am it goes down by half! I have no intention of getting up in the middle of the night :)! LOL. This is what it looked like when I started.

Currently SLAM'ing and eating bleach like mad

So I am in the process of SLAM'ing our pool. IN 48 hours I have used about 15gallons of bleach. After 3-4 hours the pool chlorine (which is clear, blue, can easily see to the bottom, just was getting algae on the walls and vacuum) goes from 24 to 12-15. Is it normal to go through this much...

Struggling with algae but decent numbers

So you guys think that that water is cloudy? I will do a proper slam like I mentioned. Since it is 60ppm for the CYA, should I do a partial drain or just do the SLAM and keep the pool at the 60ppm.

Struggling with algae but decent numbers

When we get algae our pool is still clear, it builds up on the sides of the pool, not on top of the water and it doesn't get all cloudy. I will attach a photo, I consider this clear, bit there is a bit of algae growing on the wall and on the vacuum.

Struggling with algae but decent numbers

Re: SLAM, it says "Chlorine additions should be frequent, especially at the beginning. Algae and other organic debris will consume chlorine very rapidly at first. As things progress, you will lose less chlorine each cycle and can add chlorine less frequently" and also " You pass an Overnight...

Struggling with algae but decent numbers

I read one of the questions wrong, yes I DO maintain the chlorine above the minimum, I read it as above the maximum. I only use tablets 4 months out of the year, in addition to bleach, bu the summers here are 100-120 degrees and I am otherwise out there every single day.

Struggling with algae but decent numbers

The algae is yellow in color but maybe it isn't mustard algae bc it does not grow in clumps. It only sticks to the sides and bottom of the pool.

Struggling with algae but decent numbers

I apologize for the delayed response! I do not always maintain it above the minimum, just added two gallons of bleach and some tabs to kill stuff. The problem with the CYA, is that it goes up past 60 every year. I feel like we h ave to drain or do a partial drain every 12-16 months. Is that...

Struggling with algae but decent numbers

We are struggling with yellow algae. This happens EVERY summer and is the bane of my existence. Currently our pool numbers are as follows: Chlorine - 6.5 pH- 7.6 CYA - 60 VSP runs 9-10 hours a day right now, as we are in PHX and its over 100 degrees. Our pool is 14062gal gunnite, in ground...

Too much CYA, do I have to drain the whole pool?

T-Mart, I literally just went through this a week ago!! Our pool is 9 months old and we started out using the ducks based on the PB recommendations. This summer we got algae twice and I couldn't keep the pool looking good, so I FINALLY ordered the Taylor K-2006 test kit and found my CYA to be...

New Pool, Hose Filled. Super High Alk.

I am a noobie myself but the first thing I would do (and I did NOT do for 9 months and totally regretted it) is to buy the good test kit. Makes a huge difference and is much more accurate. I know its in the pool school section. When first filling the pool, your local water will have its own...

Recent Drain/Refill and NO FC detected

You guys, as usual, are the BEST! Thanks for all of the tips. I will get the stabilizer in the socks asap and see if getting my CYA to 30 will help keep the chlorine in the pool. I am using the bleach from was mart right now and its 8%.Going to the calculator right now to see how much CYA to...

Recent Drain/Refill and NO FC detected

Hello all! I just recently drained and refilled our pool due to a CYA level in the 150-200 range. After doing this, I have been checking chemicals daily. Yesterday my FC was at 0, as it is today! I am using the TFP calculator and it told me to add 110 oz bleach, which I do, but then by the...

That's pretty much how it is! HAHA! As soon as the pool was full, no interest. Gotta love it....LOL

New pool (9 months), new Taylor test kit, I also think I have algae!!

Thanks all! I was going to try the tab route until I read your posts. Will buy the powder and get it to 30. The CYA test solution was not cloudy at all. That was straight tap water, so I am guessing that should be expected that there was no cloud (or very very very mildly so....) This...

New pool (9 months), new Taylor test kit, I also think I have algae!!

I did not know this. I figured if the pool was empty and we brushed it down with diluted bleach water, we would kill any algae. Guess I was wrong. Now the algae we have/had is very mild. The pool is now refilled and looks great. I guess I can post a pic? - - - Updated - - - UPDATE!! The...

New pool (9 months), new Taylor test kit, I also think I have algae!!

Thanks, Kimkats! We finally finished draining it today and it's already filled up halfway. Should be done in the morning. We have pebble sheen (from gunnite, no vinyl/plaster/fiberglass) so we were good about spraying it down every hour or two. Glad we are just about done with the process...

New pool (9 months), new Taylor test kit, I also think I have algae!!

So we started emptying out the pool yesterday around 3 pm. 26 hours later and we are about halfway there!!! YIKES! This is taking forever. We bought a 1 hp pump from Harbor Freight. It said it pumps 2900 gal/hr. Of course, I figured that would be at optimal conditions, so the fastest would...

New pool (9 months), new Taylor test kit, I also think I have algae!!

And do I need to worry about phosphates at all? We purchased a 1 hp pump at Harbor Freight last night. Although, the silly thing doesn't attach to a hose. Off to home depot to see if we can figure that out!

New pool (9 months), new Taylor test kit, I also think I have algae!!

Hi MarianParoo, I did do the CYA test based on the Taylor K-2006 test kit. Unfortunately, anything over 100 for that test, it doesn't give you an indication with markings. I also did use the calculator and based on the results, I have to drain bout 60% of the pool. That is the hardest part...

New pool (9 months), new Taylor test kit, I also think I have algae!!

I ordered the test kit based on TFP recommendation after using the PB stuff for a good 9 months. Good to know about the CYA, I definitely can see how if you stare long enough you'll see the dot! Must mean my CYA is really at 125-150! Hence the pool drain.... Looking into pumps this...

New pool (9 months), new Taylor test kit, I also think I have algae!!

Good point, I think I will look at Harbor Freight, they are always the most reasonably priced...It may not last forever, but hopefully for awhile. I live in Phoenix, so unfortunately, there are not very many hills around, but that's a great idea!

Thanks Mr Bruce. Since I do not have in floor cleaning, I am guessing I will have to rent a pump and drain the pool?
