Keeping pump running over winter with heat pump

Thanks for the feedback. I'll forget my "experiment".

Keeping pump running over winter with heat pump

I've been benefitting from this forum for years. Because we live in the NE, for all that time, I've been draining down the water level to below the return jets, blowing out the lines, etc. In other words, winterizing by the book. Today, I covered our pool (mesh cover) to avoid the coming...

SWG readout says more salt than Taylor test, which is correct?

To the OP: Mknauss is correct in that the most important NaCl reading is what makes your SWCG happy. I have a Circupool and it doesn't appear too fussy about salinity (up to a point). When opening the pool, I will do the Taylor 1766 test and add salt to get to ~4000 ppm and generally my SWCG is...

    What brand/model salt water generator?

I second the vote for Circupool and for upsizing. Mine has been utterly reliable for 3 years. I have a 35,000 gal pool and run my pump 24/7 but the SWCG (sized for 60K gallons) runs at 30% or roughly 7+ hours a day. Don't forget the salt. I just added 400 lbs of water softener salt (buy from...

Best way to add large amounts of CYA to new pool

Netwizz, I bought brand new reagents from the TFP store. I was leery that my CYA was so low on opening, but the new reagents and the old both told the same story.

Best way to add large amounts of CYA to new pool

Agree that it sounds like a lot. But pool math says I needed 18 lbs to get up to where I need to be. I will add in 1 lb increments, but for some reason my CYA was very low on opening this year.

Best way to add large amounts of CYA to new pool

Up until now, I've relied on the liquid CYA. This is my first time with the solid form. FWIW, it says "cyanuric acid" and "stabilizer" "50 lbs". It came in a big blue bucket. It is definitely a fine powder. Fine enough to come out of the sock I put in the skimmer. Fine enough that it was a pain...

Best way to add large amounts of CYA to new pool

I just recently tried the sock method and the powder quickly made the skimmer look very similar to when I would pour the liquid version. I assume that the liquid is not a "solution" but rather a "suspension" that lodges into the filter and dissolve over time. It seems the sock just keeps the...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

FWIW, I've been maintaining 5-5.5 FC with a CYA of 70 for a week or so with the RJ60+ running at 25% (24/7). Previously, I was metering about 96 oz of 13% bleach per day which was about spot on for a 2 ppm/day loss. The SWG runtime calculator says I would need 4.5 hrs of runtime to replace 2...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

I think things are on the right track in our pool. I've been running the RJ60 at 25% (VSP runs at low speed 24/7) and have been maintaining an FC of 5. Not sure what was going on earlier. Never had evidence of algae or a bad OCLT, but now it seems to be working. I'll admit I panicked and...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

So, at first testing it looks promising: after 14 hr of 80% the RJ60 added 3.5 ppm for a total FC of 13. I will now turn it down to 25% for 6hr of daily SWG runtime.

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

OK. After 2 sunny days, FC is now 9.5 (CC=0). NaCl reads 4200 on the RJ60 (range 3500-4500 ppm). Actual NaCl testing shows 4800 (but the RJ60 seems happy). Water temp=72°F. CYA (hate that test) now reads 50. Flow at 2000 RPM is ~30 GPM. I restarted the SWG cell at ~5 pm to run overnight at 80%...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

a Exactly :-) Thanks Kelly. I went to SLAM levels to test the hypothesis that I had occult algae. I don't think that was the case b/c the pool has remained very clear and the OCLTs have been negative (no loss). After the first negative OCLT (despite a SLAM-level FC), I turned on the SWG to 80%...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

Passed the OCLT again: 19.5 ppm FC last night; 19 ppm this morning. I will wait until the FC is 10 before I restart the SWG. I'm still not sure I understand what is happening.

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

Hi Kelly, Not knowing better, I turned it on (as I said earlier) after the OCLT this morning just to see if I could keep up a SLAM level of FC. It didn't work. I keep thinking that turning on the SWG was like when I was turning on the Stenner to add bleach. I'm learning (for reasons I don't yet...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

Just an update. Came home after dark and turned off the SWG (running at 80% for 12 hours) and TC was 19.5. CC 0. This is down from 24.5 this morning. Granted it rained most of the day, so that may have used up some FC, but I had no CC. On the other hand, it was cloudy...so sunlight was not a...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

I've read that some folks think that the output claims of Circupool are fanciful. I considered that possibility as well as an explanation of my unexpectedly low output. Too early to say.

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

FWIW, I've never seen a low-flow error on the RJ since I started it...and I've spent lots of time staring at it ;-) That said, no harm in running a bit more flow.

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

I'll double check, but I believe my lowest speed is 1250 rpm. That shows about 20 gpm on my flow meter.

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

Hi Ping, I've dialed in a flow rate that activates the flow switch for the lowest pump speed. I sometimes increase the speed if I'm trying to mix things up or after a rainstorm to help the skimmers. Your numbers basically agree with mine as to how much FC I expected to make. I'll turn the SWG...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

Circupool states that the RJ60 can output 3.1 lbs of Cl2 per day. I don't have it in front of me, but one of the members did an Excel calculator which indicated that 20% runtime per 24 hours should yield 2 ppm/day of FC in our pool. And yes, the CYA dot disappeared between the 60 and 70 mark...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

Right now I'm at 24.5 FC after doing a mini-SLAM. I started the SWG this morning at 80% which should be producing about 8 ppm of FC for our pool per day. I'll do another OCLT tonight to be safe (and see where FC is at after 12 hr at 80%). It is cloudy today, so it should give the SWG a chance to...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

Thanks Kelly, I left out a few details for brevity. I believe I started the SWG in the evening with an existing FC of 5 and checked it twice in the morning over the next 48 hours (FC steady at 5) before upping the CYA, NaCl and the CaCl2 when it then dipped to 3 24 hr later. I originally...

Went from being saltwater curious to a bit confused about my chlorination identity

I have been a Stenner chlorination guy for the last 3 seasons but had gotten lazy about schlepping bottles of bleach, so I took the plunge and installed an RJ60+ this season. The install was a breeze and after adding 800 lbs of salt to our pool (based on the Taylor test kit), I was getting the...

    Blaster 2000: me like

Just a quick note to those who have cartridge filters. I recently bought a set of Pleatco filters for my Pentair C&C 420 and a Blaster 2000. I put the new filters in at opening this year and all was well until we got a massive rainstorm that dropped ~3" of rain in 4 hours in the NE. Sadly, my...

    Large CYA drop over winter?

In the northeast although we had a lot of precipitation over the winter my CYA went from 65 to ~10....more of a drop than I expected. I added dichlor to both add FC and add CYA. My CYA is now 50 and FC has been relatively stable since that addition, so I don't think ammonia is/was our problem...

Many thanks to the TFP community...

I agree that $6000 seems crazy but the prior owners said that other pool companies charged less for the routine maintenance but charged an arm and a leg for chemicals. The $6K company didn't charge for chemicals so they felt they came out ahead. Whether it was $3K or $6K, as a rationale person...

    Transfer Chlorine

You should be good with your chosen pump. I use a diaphragm pump that worked fine through the first season (I too have a 55 g underground cistern for bleach--but I fill from 1 g bottles twice a season). I just rinse the pump with water after the transfer and so far so good. I have a post on...

Many thanks to the TFP community...

For helping me close my pool for the first time. Of course whether I was truly successful will be known upon opening next season. That said, with your help and watching what the previous owner's pool company charged $1000 to do, I think we are going to be fine. Fact is, that thanks to all of...
