    Leslie's- any point?

A Leslie's just opened near me. Is there any real reason for me to go in there? I'm probably going to have to do a SLAM this week, just wondering if they have good prices on liquid chlorine, or if I'm better off at walmart.

To cover or not to cover...

This is our first "winter" as pool owners in Louisiana. The previous homeowner did not close her pool, per se, but did have a very expensive year round pool service take care of it. It was sparkling in January. She did not own a pool cover, apparently. We do not have the luxury of a pool boy...

    SLAM completed-what now?

As expected, I returned from vacation to find a yucky pool. I tell you what, I was ---><--- this close to calling the pool guys in, and I'm so glad I didn't! So long story short, I've been SLAMming this week and i feel like I'm good. OCLT passed, CC is 0, and the water looks amazing. I vacuumed...

I thought things were going so well...

But I believe I have an algae problem. Our pool looks pretty good in the shallow end but is greenish and getting cloudy in the deep. There is yellowish green "dust" along the surfaces. My first step was to begin brushing daily and set the pump to run continually. The CYA, according to a...

    Our light came out

The entire fixture has come out. My husband bumped it this weekend and found the metal ring that covers it, one of the screw openings, is broken. We got it set back in but my son knocked it out again today. First question, it is sitting , connected, on the side of the pool right now. Is that...

    Rain

What do you do during a heavy rain? My chemistry was perfect yesterday when I did a full test, and the rain started last night. I usually put some chlorine in the evening. Is it best to try to keep up with the chemistry through a storm, or just deal with it all afterward?

    What's wrong with my filter?

I vacuumed and cleaned filter baskets today, chemistry has been great. When the timer kicked on this evening, I could hear outside it was louder than normal. The filter basket at the pump (which from what I understand, needs to be full of water to prime and run correctly) was only about half...

Borax vs washing soda- which is better and cheaper?

My ph is 7.2 and I need to bring it up. Is there any difference between adding the washing soda vs the borax? I've priced both and the soda seems cheaper, although I just bought borax in bulk on Amazon Prime Pantry for much cheaper than in store (a handy little service if you've never used it)...

Test kit finally here! First result and a question

My question first...since the TF100 instructions say it's best to check inside, do you fill vials outside and bring them in, or transport using another method? I will most likely be checking first thing in the morning, but since I just got the kit I brought a tub of water inside after swimming...

    It's the small things...

I'm so stinking excited, I got my timer working! Probably no big deal, I'm sure, but I'm glad to be taking some control and hopefully lowering my power bill a TON! I can't for the life of me wonder why the pump was left to run ALL THE TIME. Anyway, I set it to run about 4-5 hours for now and may...

Here's what I have- help me make sense of it!

I did some further inspecting of our system trying to understand it all. I just need help identifying everything and making sense of it. Here's the whole pump setup: I have identified the pump as a Hayward Super Pump. There is also a booster pump for the Polaris, which is either disabled or...

Now I have a question about timers

Since we've lived here, our pool has been "on" non-stop. In doing some research on this site, though, it appears that isn't necessary? When I had a pool service come out initially, they said turning it off and on through the day might save a few bucks in electricity each month, but that was it...

    Party!

We are having our first party next weekend. Since we've moved in, our pool hasn't had much traffic, but we have been very lucky with chemicals and haven't had any big adjustments. In preparation for lots of people, is it better to just wait until it's over to straighten chemicals out again or...

Hello! I'm new, and a rookie!

Hello! I recently moved into a new home with a 23k gallon vinyl in ground pool. I am eager to maintain it myself but do have a pool service on hand if needed. I'm still wrapping my head around the chemistry but for now everything is cool. The pool was very well maintained by the previous owner...
