    Quick CYA Question

What is the shelf life of CYA, assuming it is stored well? I am looking at prices and I can get 15#'s for about $10 more than 4#'s. I don't need that much, and 15#'s would probably last me 2 seasons comfortably. So, should I just buy what I need or can I over buy and store for next season?

What Has Become My Annual Thank You Post

I still remember the first time I hit this forum. I had purchased a short sale, and when I opened the pool in the Spring I had a huge mess on my hands. Never having owned a pool, let alone a large in ground pool before, I did what most of us do. I went to the pool store. The biggest...

    Spider Gasket Help

Well, I just posted about my fantastically easy opening and now I have an issue. I noticed my water level was falling. I was puzzled. I have a couple patches but I can see them and they looked OK. I waded into the shallow end to check them and literally couldn't believe how cold it was...

Thanks and a Word of Encouragement

I just wanted to thank this site and it's contributors for a great opening this season. This is my third season and I have had the easiest start-up yet. I have been open less than 48 hours and my water is clear. It has been a strange "Spring" here in MN, and I decided to get a jump on things...

    Pool Pole Replacement Questions

Hello. Well, my 12 year old son (behaving like a 12 year old boy), basically broke our telescoping brush handle. He bent it and since it is aluminum, when he attempted to bend it back it broke. It is now functionally about 2/3 as long as it was. I can only state I was relieved when I heard...

    Need Help Identifying Drain Plug

I have a 2 year old Hayward Sand Filter S244T. It was installed before we bought the home. My drain plug is leaking and the Pool Supply store that installed it apparently used a non-Hayward part. I have gone to them to get help identifying it and replacing it but they are taking their time...

Algae Colony That Needs to Get Fire Bombed

So, CYA is 40, TA is 110, TC was 6 at 8:00 tonight, raised to 8. pH is 7.6. Water is clear, CC is 0. I have passed the ONCLT 2 nights in a row but I am still getting a little bit of growth on the shady side of the liner. It appears about every other day, I brush it off and it doesn't cloud...

    Algae Question

Well, turned out I had a crummy week last week. I wasn't home for 3 days and am still battling the algae, though it is better. The question I have is last night I tested it and it was at 11 ppm. I used the calculator to bring it up to 16. Woke up this morning, tested it and was still at 16...

    Skimmer Question

I have two skimmers. When I opened up the pool I pulled the plugs out. In front of where the plugs screw in that I removed (the tall plugs that kind of look like a liter bottle) there is another plug. On both skimmers this plug is still in place. Should it be?

    Ooops. Got an algae bloom.

We have had very hot weather and last week we had a huge downpour which literally took my pool from ideal water level to about 2" above the skimmer box. I was testing and maintaining b/t 5-7 ppm. Underneath the return jet for the main drain I noticed kind of a light green streak which I...

    Pool Timers

Any thoughts on the best/lowest cost option for a pool timer? I have been looking at the Intermec's, but it seems they are not all weather safe. Just curious what everyone else uses. My pump is 120V running on a 20 amp circuit. Thanks.

    CYA Question

I just got my TF test kit, so I am excited to start using it. I have read alot of what is on the forum and have basically formed an opinion that 50ppm CYA is probably an ideal level for me because living in MN, the sun isn't quite as intense up here as in other climates and being this is my...

    Raypak C-R265-EN Question

Hi. I have finally won pool wars. Chlorine has held overnight and CC is 0. Time to turn on the heater, right? Not so fast. We live in MN, the home be bought was a short sale. The pump and filter were new but the heater is old. When I popped the top the heat exchanger tubes were covered...

Adding DE to a Sand Filter

Quick question. I re-read the article about adding DE to a sand filter. I posted previously about a nasty algae problem, have been shocking like it is my job (funny, wife seems to think getting the pool straight should be my sole occupation   ) and it is starting to make...

    Rough Start-up, Can't Get Water to Clear-up

My wife posted while I was out of town, went to the pool store for a water test and was basically told using the chemicals we were (bleach and soda ash) were going to ruin the filter and trash her hair so I apologize for the single post with no follow up... Here's the deal. We bought...
