Found a new way to add CYA

So I was about to add CYA to my pool last week. I'm sitting there thinking "I don't really want to put this sock in my skimmer, but I'm too lazy to string it up in front of my return. Then it hit me. Drop the sock in my PoolSkim! It worked perfectly. So if you have a PoolSkim, think about it if...

    Z-Wave 220v automated switch

So, I'm looking for a Z-Wave 220v switch, but can't find one. I found the Evolve LFM-20, but it appears to only disconnect one leg of the 220v, which makes me a little nervous. Should I be...

So, I've been doing some math (electricity usage)...

... and I'm quite surprised at the results. Yesterday I played with different GPM settings on my pump, recording how many watts are used at each step, and calculated out the power usage. Now this will vary with different pools and plumbing, but either way I'm still quite surprised to see the...

Anyone in Dallas with a CompuPool CPSC48?

I have removed mine, and would like to give it away to someone that could use the spare parts. The cell is still good as far as I know. The circuit board in the controller is fried, but the power supply and display are still good. Just hate to throw away several hundred dollars of stuff when...

    Boric Acid

In the past, I've used the powder boric acid. Now that my TA is almost back in check, I'm ordering 110 pounds of boric acid to replace the borates in my pool. Has anyone tried the granular boric acid instead of the powder? It's significantly cheaper.

Aftermarket valves and parts for LQ

Hey all, Somewhere someone was talking about some aftermarket more heavy duty parts for the LQ, especially metering valves. Now, I can't find it. I did find this thread, but I thought someone had found some really heavy duty ones. If you know, could you post it here please? Here's the thread I...

    Test Strips

The pool startup guy came today for the first chemical additions after the replaster. He tested the water with test strips. Keep in mind, nothing has been added to the water at all at this point. Test strips show CYA of 100. I told him there was no way that was accurate, and he insisted it was...

    Suction side cleaner for leaves?

Is there a suction side cleaner that will handle leaves? I really want something like a Polaris with a bag on top, or something that will bag the leaves, but everything I see is pressure side. My returns are all at one end of a very large pool, the only port I have in the middle is suction side...

    Leaf eater

Looking for something to help with leaves on the surface of my pool. Saw the pool python, comments on it or any competing systems are welcome. Prefer pressure side.

    Restoring my pool!!!

Finally, the time has arrived where we can rebuild/restore our pool! We believe the pool was built in 1957 (very sure). House was built in 1954 and they did some major upgrades 3 years later. From the receipts I could find, the basic replaster was done in either 1989 or 1991. The style and...

    Grill recommendations?

Going to buy a new grill. This one will be natural gas (I know, propane is hotter, but I want NG), and I want a NICE one. Got a bonus and going to spend money to get a good one. No Chinese junk, any recommendations?

Need input from someone with Intelliflo VF experience

Time to backwash my filter. I have the plunge type valve with only backwash and filter positions. The VF has to run a backwash cycle and a rinse cycle to reset it's pressure memory. Do I run the rinse cycle with the valve in backwash or filter position? I'm guessing it needs to be in filter so...

Wiring a Pentair VF (VS probably applies too)

So, before I go out and start working on this pump again, I have been thinking about this and wanted to pose this question. My old pump (and the new Pentair) is 220v. It was wired with the two hot wires from the timer, and a bonding wire from the case of the pump. There is not a third "ground"...

    Copper pipe

Interestingly, I just had a pool tech tell me you can't (or shouldn't) have a salt pool if you have copper pipes. I've never heard of this. How the heck could you have a heater on a salt pool if this were true? I don't have a heater, but my pool is plumbed with copper. Anyone heard this before?

Need to replace pump - recommendations welcome

I know how to keep a pool clean, but no knowledge about pumps at all. Attached is a picture of my existing pump. It's squealing and howling (both) very badly, it is most certainly going out. I guess 12 years of use was too much for it. My pool specs are in my sig line. I pay approximately...

    I had to share!

I was out in my pool (I don't just read TFP all day!) and had to take a picture. Where the drain is, that's 10' deep. You can clearly see not just the robot running, but the leaves in the pool that it's about to pick up, all the way from the front of the pool. The discoloring in the plaster...

    Evapotranspiration sprinkler controllers

Looking for some experienced opinioins on evapotranspiration sprinkler controllers. I have a 1.25 acre lot, and with temps already predicted to be 103 next week, I know my water consumption is about to go up. For example, July of last year saw a 150,000 gallon usage to keep the lawn green. I...

    Still helping BBB newbie

ph=7.5 FC=5.0 CC=0 - .5 TA=120 CH=350 CYA=less than 20 He's adding more CYA today. Short story - Water is cloudy after a swimmer got in. Can see bottom but whitish cloudy. Long story - I helped him open his pool this year. It was completely drained when I got there. He sprayed the inside of...

The MSN method to opening and maintaining your pool

http://realestate.msn.com/how-to-get-yo ... for-summer I think my favorite is slide 5, "Keep your FC at 1-3 ppm, and keep adding tablets... you can put them in your skimmer" OK, I paraphrased. At least they posted a few warnings.

    SWCG Chlorine Balance Question

So I thought I saw this answered before, but couldn't find and and can't remember the answer if I did read it... When I have CYA of 80 in my salt pool, why does poolcalculator still recommend only 3ppm of FC? That makes me a bit nervous! I'm keeping it at 6 right now, but would not mind...

    Strange Salt Level Readings

All I can think of! Strange. As you know, I recently finished my SWG install. I have an estimated 44,000 gallon pool based on measurements and based on how the pool reacts to chemical additions. I added thirty 40 lb bags to the pool. A day later (pump running 24/7) the SWG says low salt, below...

Anyone heard of this? (oxidation with Liquidator)

Since installing my Liquidator, I have noticed everything in the pool equipment room and the garage getting oxidized. Copper is green, steel is rusting. My pool equipment is enclosed in a room off the back of my garage. Sometimes we will notice a heavy odor that's not really the same as...

    Interesting!

Passing along a little info, and of course always open to comment. Typically when we get a storm, it drives my pH up. I'm used to it, and actually welcome it most the time since I don't have any aeration going on in my pool. Last night we got hammered with a very long storm, around 3 or 4...
