Brain fog when opening pool for the season

Hey guys - being a NJ pool owner over the age of 50 - there is always that time in late May / early June where I once again have to re-learn everything I had "down pat" last season. :) Sunday early afternoon we opened our above ground pool and it was green (hole in cover). No biggie - I...

May have added too much CYA

Morning everyone! I'm not exactly a pool newbie - going on my 5th season, so I'm particularly mad at myself for this stupid mistake. I have a 38' x 18 x 52" partially sunk AGP. I have the Taylor K-2006 test kit. I use liquid clorine, baking soda and Borax as pool chemicals. According to...

Good afternoon from New Jersey! I have an oval partially sunk above ground pool that is 38‘x18’x52” with approx 18,400 gallons of water. ( I used the TFP calculator). I have a 20” sand filter. My Doughboy Powerline XP 1.5 HP pump failed last season. I just bought a Hayward Powerflo LX with...

Dirty water from jet after vacuuming?

Morning. I turn the pump off - disconnect the vacuum from the skimmer port and then turn the pump back on again. Dirty water shoots back into the pool for perhaps 5 seconds right after I turn the pump back on. Am I perhaps not back washing enough?...or perhaps right after I vacuum I should...

No Combined Chlorine but water is a bit cloudy

We've had a TON of rain here in Central NJ the past week. My PH was 7.4 and it just tested at 7.0. I had my wife throw in a half box of Borax and then we'll retest. CYA at about 45. TA around 70. Last tested FC to be 4.5. No CC Has wife throw in three cups of bleach to get FC to be around...

Shock before covering AG pool with vinyl patterned liner?

Good afternoon. Closing my pool today. First time. I know there is an article that says to bring the water to shock level before covering...however I'm worried my patterned liner will get faded. Does the chlorine level dissipate through the winter? I'm guessing yes. Everything else is...

First time closing my AG pool

Hey guys. I've read the article in pool school and just have a couple of questions. I bought one of those Tupperware lids to cover my skimmer. Do they work? Should i just drain 6" below skimmer? Also if i dismantle my skimmer hose from the pump im guessing i dont have to add the upside water...

Bring sand pump inside for Winter

Good morning. First time closing pool. I read the article on this site under pool equipment and it mentions bringing the pump indoors but not the filter. Should I just drain and cover it? Also it mentions draining the pool 6" below the skimmer. Part of my pool package was this cover for...

Anyone have a Doughboy Silver Lake steel pool with an SWG?

Just curious. Doughboy has a fairly decent 30 year warranty that is voided if you install a SWG. However I think the benefits of saltwater might out weigh the voided warranty.

Clear water but not sparkling blue

FC 7 PH 7.6 TA 70 CYA 50 Hey guys. Second time this has happened. My water will be sparkling blue...then seems to loose it's lustre. First time I cleared it up with a SLAM. When I brush the floor I'll see brownish green clouds kicked up. I'm thinking I need to keep my FC higher to play it...

Need to SLAM again part 2

Ok. So after a week vacation and my neighbor adding bleach for me to keep cl at 5 ppm - I came back to a pool with a green bottom. Water was clear...bottom green. I decided to brush the bottom and let run the filter overnight. After brushing, the water turned green. I then decided to get...

    Need to Slam again

So I'm pretty sure what answer I'm going to get but here goes... Bleach vs 1lb shock packets. If I spend 2.99 USD per gl of 8.25% bleach...it seems more cost effective to just throw 2 1lb packets of shock in. The kind they gave me in my welcome pack also contains copper. It's the "BioGuard...

4 days after SLAM and looking good!

Question. Just did my daily test for TC. Also did PH for the first time since Sunday when I started my SLAM. Pool is looking Great!! My PH was neutral after being raised to 7.6 or so prior to SLAM. Is it natural for a SLAM to cause PH drift downwards? Nevermind - forgot we got a TON of...

Question regarding SWG for AG pool

I'm thinking next season of installing a SWG for my Doughboy AG pool. Steel not resin pool. The only reason I'm hesitant is that because if I do...I void the 35 year pro-rated Doughboy warranty. Granted after the first three years where the pool is covered 100%..the warranty is good but not...

    Question regarding CYA sock method

Hey guys. Quick question regarding the CYA sock method. So my CYA level is very low. Undetectable using the Taylor black dot test. I've been assuming 10 ppm when doing chlorine for my recent completed SLAM. I have added Trichlor in the past so this estimate is not unreasonable. Since my SLAM...
