Safe levels for VERY high CYA?

:bump: So, any comment on my original question? Often stated, "it's safe to swim with FC levels at shock level". Since shock level is a function of CYA level, where's the real limit?

Safe levels for VERY high CYA?

Split by moderator from HERE. Please start your own thread to ask your own questions. Thanks, jblizzle Kind of diverging from the original question, but help me understand this. Does this hold true if I have insanely high CYA levels? I'm limping along and delaying the refill, but with a CYA of...

    DIY automation

That is interesting. So the implementation details vary a bit, but basically just a bucket with a tube to the suction side of the pump and a metering valve. Frankly I'm amazed you're able to maintain consistent delivery volumes. Do you have enough chemistry data to back this up? I'm wondering if...

    DIY automation

The ebay version lead me to this one on AdaFruit http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2012/12/19/new-product-peristaltic-liquid-pump-with-silicone-tubing/ which lead me to a couple interesting youtube videos of the pump in action and a teardown. Looks to be using everyday silicone tubing in the pump...

    DIY automation

So, I've been chewing on ideas of reducing my daily maintenance effort... SWG are interesting, not entirely sure I understand how the liquidator works yet (suction side of filter pump plus a metering valve? Seems a recipe for inconsistent delivery) and then you have metering pumps (mostly...

Are you ok with that barrel? Bleach is UV sensitive and that barrel isn't doing much to block it.... -Denny

    Plumbing Question

Hmm... well it seems I have 8 1/2 inches center to center on those two pipes. Using fitting dimensions from here http://lascofittings.sitewrench.com/assets/1824/tech40.pdf A 2" elbow, the smaller Jandy valve, and a 1-1/2" street elbow seems about the smallest I can get it and is still more...

    Plumbing Question

Ok, a little trip down google lane lead me to this link http://www.zodiacpoolsystems.com/~/media/Zodiac/Global/Downloads/SA/SA5250.ashx which seems to include dimensions and head loss charts for the full line of Jandy valves. I'll do a little tape measure work and see what I can fit in there...

    Plumbing Question

So, a Jandy 4715 for the 1-1/2" to 2" size or a Jandy 4717 for the 2" to 2-1/2" size? Looks to be $32 or $45 on Amazon, is there somewhere better to buy them? I'm also seeing them listed as "never lube" and "maintenance free", but the "customers also bought" section I'm seeing lubricant and a...

    Plumbing Question

So the main 2" suction line goes to my skimmer, the random cut off 1.5" pipe on the right goes through the side of the pool to a threaded fitting. I believe it is an abandoned connection for a suction side cleaner (kreepy kraully). I'd like to put it back into service as one anyway... Clearly...

    Pool plumbing question

I'm looking at replumbing my intakes as well.... Isn't this a "recommended against" layout? Doesn't this have the possibility of someone closing both valves and starving the pump? -Denny

    Why different CYA Targets?

Ok, that makes a bit more sense as a risk/reward balance. On the risk side, needing to SLAM at the higher CYA levels takes _much_ more chlorine. But an automated chlorine system is less likely to "miss a day" and start a algae bloom. On the reward side there's less overall chlorine demand with...

    Why different CYA Targets?

I see the standard recommendation for pools being chlorinated "by hand" - manual additions of some type of liquid chlorine seems to be 50, though I've seen posts here giving that a range of 30-50 depending... I also see that the recommended level with a salt system is a bit higher than that...

    New pool owner, weird readings?

Uhmm... ok. "a lot" and "sock about 2/3 full" aren't really numbers I can use to estimate your current water chemistry. Well, I could, but the accuracy is going to be about as good as the test strips you've been using ;-) Clearly you have _some_ CYA. That gives me a bit more confidence in the...

Pool water drain and replace during a drought

There may be another option. It seems that most places that have water shortage issues, there's someone offering reverse osmosis services. Here in Tucson AZ you can get them to bring a machine and let it run in your pool for a couple days. It can pull out all the CYA and calcium. Runs about $400...

    New pool owner, weird readings?

Ok, let's start with this... Welcome to the forum  I think you've now become an example of why no one here has any confidence in test strips. Even with the strips you are functionally flying blind until you can get better test tool. Don't panic, I've recently done the very same. In the...

About to be first time (new to me) pool owner

Look around for places algae or other biologicals may be hiding. May not apply to you, but l recently bought a house with pool, finally got around to tracking down a random disconnected pipe that comes up near my pump/filter... turns out that it runs strait into the pool. Seems to be an...

    CYA 500 ppm!!

That's the chlorine I've been using at the moment. Have a minor fear that it's seasonable availability at wally world, so I was price shopping looking for stronger/cheaper and consistently available. I spoke to E-Konomy yesterday. Probably headed that way later this week to get a couple cases...

    CYA 500 ppm!!

Still is. I linked pictures from a couple days ago. It's one of the nicest pools I've swam in. No odor, no cloudiness, easy on the eyes. This is the way I'm leaning at the moment. It is interesting that the math says my pool should be a cesspool, but it's actually a sparkling oasis. Leading...

    CYA 500 ppm!!

The CYA test is a bit subjective. Doing it at night in artificial lighting is admittedly non-optimal. After the 4:1 test, I had a leftover sample of diluted water, the easiest next dilution was 1:1 which resulted in my 9:1. I have every intention of repeating the test in better lighting...

    CYA 500 ppm!!

Well, I'm just like a kid on Christmas morning, my TF-100XL with speed stir arrived today Woo!! I have unpleasant (and slightly fuzzy) memories of titrating by hand in chemistry class, I gotta say, the speed stir is one nice piece of kit. So, I know you're all hanging on the edge of your seat...

    CYA 500 ppm!!

Yeah, the last time I was in there I had the most amazingly stupid conversation. I let them test my water (I know, I know... My TF-100XL with speedstir arrives today ) then I asked about some liquid chlorine... I got hammered by two of them about how that is the _WORST POSSIBLE_ way to...

    CYA 500 ppm!!

Yeah, just not trusting my eyes or the cheapie tester at this point. Pretty much every time I've checked it the pH has been high to very high. I've now added 4 gallons of muriatic acid in ~30 days. (14.5% Kem-Tek brand) Seems extreme, but I recognize I'm using about the weakest acid sold. At...

    CYA 500 ppm!!

Ok, so I finally bit the bullet and tore down my DE filter (Nautilus NS-60). It was running about 30 PSI when I bought the house. I backwashed a couple weeks ago and have been running in the mid 20's since. I neglected to take any pictures during the teardown, but I have a few of the aftermath...

    CYA 500 ppm!!

That is one of the nagging fears in the back of my mind. Is there any practical way to test for that? Determine what may have been used? Educated guesses on when this may "stop working"?

    CYA 500 ppm!!

So, the chemistry is one aspect. I'm sure with a decent test kit and the information here I can get it under control. The other part.... Where do I stop? If I'm forced to do a drain and refill... I have a couple different rust stain issues, some dark staining on the floor, some broken/missing...

    CYA 500 ppm!!

That's the plan. Just chlorine and acid at the moment until I can get my test kit and make _informed_ decisions. :-) Hmmm... that's a little sad. I might be mis-quoting it here but I got the impression that the trouble-free-pool method was about _understanding_ the chemistry. The CYA chart...

    CYA 500 ppm!!

No, much lower. I closed on the house 30 days ago. At that point there was maybe three pucks in a floater. I added about three more pucks the first week and two gallons of 10% bleach since then. The OTO test (all I have tile the TF-100 arrives next week) has been showing .5 to 4 PPM
