High Chlorine Demand issues after refill

Do an ahh-some flush when it's convenient. It may take several treatments to get things cleaned out. In the meantime I would maintain a constant chlorine level of at least 3-4 assuming your cya is 30. Then add 3 ppm per person after each soak + 12 ppm shock. It wouldn't hurt to go a few ppm...

High Chlorine Demand issues after refill

Did you use the tub? You should probably drain and flush. That being said I would use it until it's convenient to do so and continue to shock each day. Maybe increase the ppm amount a bit. Note that if you use the tub you want to add approximately an additional 3 ppm per person per hour of use...

    Alkalinity Moved FAST

I meant that you could add 2 to 3 gallons tap water. That would bump up the ak and ph a bit. Sounds like you're in good shape now.

    Alkalinity Moved FAST

I would use borax. You need to affect the ph more than the ak. You can get this at the grocery store. You can also use washing soda but it will increase the a ak bit more. "It was mentioned about adjusting top off water and I think I am going to dedicate a 5 gallon bucket to the tub and top off...

FC problem - not sure if related to biofilm or not

You can also go to a pool store and buy liquid chlorine shock. I picked up a case for $15. A lot of big box stores like Home Depot or Lowes will carry this as well. The concentration is usually around 12.5%.

    Alkalinity Moved FAST

It should take about 1/2 hour. If you're close it's best to wait until the next day to test.

That's similar to what I have now. I'd leave it alone unless the ph goes up too high or drops.

    Alkalinity Moved FAST

If you scroll down to the bottom of the pool calc there is an area called Effects of adding chemicals. Here you can select a chemical and then input the amount added. It will display the affect on chemistry. In the case of acid you will see how much it will lower ak and ph. I use this to get an...

    Alkalinity Moved FAST

You need to lower the ak to about 50. When you do a new fill or when correcting ph or ak you can use the method indicated at this link: https://www.poolspaforum.com/forum/index.php?/topic/19149-lowering-total-alkalinity/ When topping off I add enough acid to bring the ak down within range and...

    Alkalinity Moved FAST

Top offs will affect the ph and ak depending on the levels of your fill water. I noticed had this issue so I now add a small amount of acid at top off to account for this. You have to experiment a little to arrive at the right amount of acid. Remember that aeration will affect the ph, so wait...

    pH down and testing

I add 4 to 6 gal water weekly in the winter (less in the summer) which increases my PH and AK. I add 2 to 5 ML muratic acid to the bucket used for filling. This keeps it in check. Found these handy droppers for measuring small amounts of acid. This is a lot easier than trying to measure...

Adding Borax? pH drifts high and TA low

The trick to stabilizing the PH is to lower the PH to 7.2 and then aerate to bring the PH back up. Repeat this process until aerating doesn't increase the PH any more. You want to slow down and reduce to 7.4 towards the end of the process so you don't end up with low PH. Below is a link that...

Adding Borax? pH drifts high and TA low

I would skip the borax for now. It will just complicate things since your PH is already high. You can use small amounts of PH down to reduce the PH. Wait until the next day and if the AK is below 50 and your PH is in range use a small amount of alkalinity increase (baking soda) to increase by 2...

Why is my combined chlorine gradually increasing?

I've been using this one. BRS 2 Part Doser - 1.1 mL per minute - Bulk Reef Supply With this timer for a 200 gal tub. EcoPlus Dual Digital Timer - Timers - Controllers Testing - Bulk Reef Supply I use a check valve on one side to stop siphoning. Been using this for about 5 months with no...

Why is my combined chlorine gradually increasing?

I found the same results shocking with MPS. I also found it affected the PH which created additional work. There was no significant effect on CC levels compared to chlorine. As mentioned you have to use it daily from the start to have an effect on CC's. MPS doesn't appear to be of much use if...

Coming Up With a Natural-based Care Regime

There is information out there that suggests exposure to chlorine is bad for you. That it is absorbed through the skin and is toxic. I'm not stating this as fact or advocating for the idea but it is widely believed by many people and that's why they look for an alternative. For people that are...

Switched to bleach and having itchy sore skin ?

I'd try that 14-15% sodium hypochlorite. Then you will know if it was the other product. It will keep a long time and though it's expensive you won't use nearly as much.

Coming Up With a Natural-based Care Regime

You have to have have adequate sanitizer levels in the tub at all times or bacteria will grow. This requires daily testing especially if your trying to maintain low levels. You also need to oxidize bather waste effectively after every use or it will build up and cause bacterial problems. To do...

FC went to zero overnight. Do I have to drain?

If the waters not cloudy you're probably okay. You can give it a shock if it gets cloudy. I'll bet your fine. That happened to me before and it didn't give me any trouble.

    Constant daily low free chlorine!!!

You may want to repeat the test and see what you get now. The difference between 7 and 10 isn't that much and could be accounted for by inaccurate testing before or after and or using heaping spoonfuls compared to level. If your new test results are the same just add less next time. Using the...

    Constant daily low free chlorine!!!

I assume you're using your drop test kit. If you're using dichlor 3/4 of an oz would increase your level by 6.2 ppm. if you started with .4 ppm that would take up to almost 7. If it was trichlor it would increase by 10.

please help out a noob with cloudy water.

It's not fun doing this job if it's below zero. If you get up to 38 I would just drain completely. You can use a siphon instead of a bucket. If you can fill from a hot water source it will help speed things up. I do this and turn my tank up as high as it will go a couple hours in advance. I...

If it's an outdoor tub and he's in Maine he might not want to drain it completely considering the outdoor temps.
