    Get this sucker to suck?

I drained my pool a couple years back. It was fairly easy to get suction on the pump. Not this time. I have tried opening the strainer and pouring water in a couple of times, but it discapears before I can get the lid back on. I'm pulling me hair out and don't want to pay the pool guy to...

    SWG - no chlorine

I bought a rebuilt T-15 from Salt Solutions. As soon as the weather got cold, no chlorine. Store tested salt at 3630 PPM. Computer says salt is low and won't turn on unit. Guy at Leslie's says they often don't work in cold water. Well, my last one did! What steps should I take to...

My free chlorine is waaay too low.

Hayward Pro Logic. My salt is around 3800 PPM. I've a rebuilt SWG that was working great until the board failed.... I repaired that failed solder joint so common with Hayward Pro Logic boards. I am running my SWG at around 70% on a ten or so hour cycle. And I am getting 1.5 ppm chlorine...

    Where has the CYA gone?

Geez. Iben told over and over that CYA never goes away. I'm not doubting you, sir, this is just really new information.

    Where has the CYA gone?

I drained/filled my Phoenix pool just about a year ago using a Mesa city water source delivered by truck (I'm on a shared well and can't use it for that.) That Mesa water has lots less magnesium sulfate than my well-based makeup water does. Oh, and? My well water is a fantastic laxative...

What size of oil filter pliers to remove salt cell?

Use a "strap wrench." You can probably find one at Harbor Fright, if not, Home Depot. Buy a pair, a large and small - you will use them more often than you think.

    repair or refurbish SWG cell?

This is not so. Salt Solutions rebuilds the units with Hayward parts for Hayward units at a fraction of the cost of a new unit. I'm about to try it.

    Rebuilding SWG cells

Well, I know my pool was at 3200 ppm salt about a year ago, and I have not backwashed or splashed out that much. Computer says 2200 and it is not generating chlorine.

    electrolytic rust removal

JoyfulNoise? Here's another. I have digested what you told me earlier, I hope. What troubles me is that I see all manner of internet posts using calcium carbonate to electrolytically remove rust from firearms barrels, among other things. Some say the barrel should be the anode. Others claim...

    Borax shortage

20 Mule Team is not as popular as when Death Valley Days was on the tube. I had trouble finding it 5 years ago in S. California. Finally found at Smart & Final. You can get 55# of boric acid delivered for under $100 and then you won't need to worry about pH.

You SWG has never been cleaned? Even before softened fill water? How old is it? I'm all in. What is the recommended borax level (I'll be using 20 mule team.) thanks. a bunch.

    Borax, High Calcium, SWGs

Thanks. I hesitate to add any kind of mineral to my pool due to the mineral content of my well make up water, as I have trouble with my SWG fouling. It's low humidity and 110F here in the summer - greater Phoenix, so I get lots of make up water. The local river's name is Rio Salado (Salt...

    Borax, High Calcium, SWGs

Whoa!~ pH above 7.8? That is contrary to all of the advice I have gotten here for high calcium water. In fact, I have been encouraged to keep the pH around 7.2/7.3? You sure about that? If so, please explain, as I am now freaking bewildered? Further, wont a pH that high tend to cause itchy...

    Borax, High Calcium, SWGs

I have a water softener. It is just not plumbed to the freakin' pool, and is so inconvenient as to never be so. That was not helpful, as I was specifically asking about borate.

    Borax, High Calcium, SWGs

My make up water comes from a well that is full of magnesium and calcium. I live in Greater Phoenix, so the summertime make up water is LOTS. After four years the water had so many minerals in it that I could not run the SWG for a week at a pH of 7.2 w/o fouling it! I have just refilled the...

    electrolytic rust removal

Hey guys. I know this is seriously off topic, but I also understand that there are many chemists that haunt this site. I am attempting to remove rust from old military rifle barrels electrolytically, using 20 Mule Team Borax as an electrolyte, and some rather fancy programmable DC power...

130k44 hayward flush valve core removal

This is a #6 "easy out" or, screw extractor. LH threads, Harbor Fright, <$10/set. A HUGE tap handle doesn't hurt, either, and this won't chuck up in a 1/2" drill. Right edge @1" on scale.
