Controlling PH upwards creep with balanced chemicals

You can slow your pH rise by lowering your TA but you don't have to. Adding MA to lower pH is pretty standard. Also, aim for a higher pH and you'll be happier. 7.2-7.8 is a range. 7.2 is not a necessary goal. See this thread TA for a typical discussion or search for more on TFP Here's how...

Normal for pH to keep rising?

Just a precaution since your CYA is 30, try to keep the FC above your minimum of 2. You can do that by aiming for the upper end of your FC range nightly. Sometimes in the summer I might even go a little above that to give me some wiggle room.

    algae back after SLAM

Sounds like something went wrong and you need to SLAM, but it might be a short one if you get on top of it early. It also sounds like you might not be sure about your CYA level and that's important to know so your FC never drops below the minimum for yor CYA Pool School - Chlorine / CYA Chart...

    Phosphates

Algae does like phosphates, but In a properly chlorinated pool algae can't exist so phosphates are something a lot of TFP people never pay attention to.

Yep and after the initial introduction of Ahh-Some, each susequent treatment is an easy part of the water change that I do.

Yeah Ahh-Some makes a big difference.

    Inadequate Heating

There could also be a heater reset button. Some heaters have them and they can trip under certain conditions. Read up on your particular model.

    chlorine consumption

It wasn't normal for CYA to drop from 120 to 80 that fast without massive dilution, drain and refill or massive splashout, etc. Everything just accelerated after that.

    Chlorox pucks

Costco takes all returns with little or zero questions. Your SWCG is your "puck" system while on vacation. Before you go away for a while, use bleach to get to the upper end of the trget FC for a NON-SWG POOL and then use the SWG to help maintain your FC above the minimum FC until you return...

High cya even after draining pool down to 18 inches

See the chlorine/CYA charts in my signature to realize that your FC would need to be way higher than 30 to SLAM with a CYA above 100. I would keep draining and refilling like mknauss said to get your CYA down to a reasonable level. I would also order more reagents from TFTestkits.net for your...

Blotches all over <2 year old replaster - CYA??

You will have to get a test kit like mknauss said, but also review the Chlorine/CYA charts (in my signature) and you might realize that there's probably no way your chlorine is absolutely fine.

    Can't seem to raise pH

Not the pool store! There's no way they can do better than you once you get the testing down. Your focus really needs to shift to keeping up the FC levels. I know jblizzle said this already, but that ic20 is always going to require supplementation with bleach in a pool that size. I've been...

    pH constantly rising

Yeah it's normal, but my acid requirements sure slowed down once my TA dropped from over 200 to about 70 now. I can keep my pH around 7.6-7.8 for quite a while now. This took well over a year to accomplish and I had help from lots of rain and a new water surce introduced to our community in late...

SLAM and work full time - what to do?

Yeah those hours will give you time in the afternoon/evening to hit it a couple of times if you need to.

    CYA consumption

That's the way that has been working most consistently for me too. Verified with a 50 ppm standard from TFTestkits.

    First Test with TFT-100

Really the main thing that can get lost in all this is to get your FC up and keep it up. Your FC does not need to fall to 0 for algae to get started it just needs to fall below the minimum (FC 2) for your CYA level of 30 ppm. You might want to aim for the higher end of the target FC of 6 so it...

Small Tub Moved - preparing for winter

I think a saltwater cell would make this How do I use Chlorine in my Spa (or pool)?) even easier. I've followed that recipe for over 2 years without any issues using the hot tub through all seasons. After the initial dial in period (first few days) I just add bleach using a shot glass after a...

Day 5 of SLAM - CC fluctuating from 0 back up- why? Losing steam here....

Even though your water is clear there's obviously algae eating up chlorine. Some SLAMs take longer than others, but until you can maintain FC 28 for a sustained period of time, this could go on quite a while. One other idea is to lower your CYA through a partial drain until the SLAM is done so...

Slamming can't get FC any higher that 16

Are you sure about your pool water volume you are using in pool math? Have you entered the correct percentage for your bleach source? I recommend testing your FC 30 minutes to 60 minutes max later to see what the FC is. That way you can get a better feel for how much bleach to add.

    Shoud I say something?

It's hard to tell people what to do. They usually have to discover it themselves when thay are ready. When we bought a house with a pool I wanted to take care of it myself. I did a Google search and TFP made the most sense. I lucked out since I was starting with a clean slate and no other...

SLAM Confirmed - But FC falling the day afterward - Expected drop after SLAM? Ideas?

I would also suggest that you could test with 10 mL water samples to save on reagent. 0.5 ppm per drop is fine enough detail--especially at high FC levels.

How often do you test your water?

You certainly don't have to test CYA that often. CYA will only change significantly over a short period if water is added, drained, splashout or using pucks etc.
